Vermintide 1 + 2

remoted in to start the beta install... but won't be home until late PST. (I heard that some people are copying their files over from "Warhammer: Vermintide 2 Closed Test" to save a couple of gigs, but I'm uncapped.)

I never did find any sort of matchmaking screen in the beta phase 3, but maybe that's in phase 4 (the one starting Feb 28). I know I could bring up my steam friends list and join their game directly, which should be good enough for beta phase 4.

Did anyone figure out the keybind for Saltzy's pistol fire while holding the rapier? It's not listed in the keybindings, and Reddit-ers keep mentioning that it is there, but not WHAT it is.

Also, are we keeping VT2 discussion here or opening a new thread?

If it's like VT1, I think it defaults to mouse 3? Try all your mouse buttons.

I wasn't sure if this is a big enough game to merit a new thread, but I'll happily move if someone decides to make it.

Based on what I've seen on streams, you can set up a private lobby and populate it with your steam friends much like in VT1.

The patch notes indicate they've fixed the rapier keybind thing.

My resolve to wait for release is rapidly weakening.

Poke poke peer pressure poke poke poke.

I'm in!

Please the beta test last weekend and it was hard as hell but I'm loving the new progression system and skills. The slugishness of the former and lack of the latter were the only issues I had with OG Vermintide.

I'll be on tonight (if it downloads in time).

Looks like I lucked out and had just enough in my wallet to get this. Feel free to add me on Steam.

New missions added to the beta today!

Today's patch fixed curse resistance (i.e. reduced health loss from grimoires), so for everyone I told last night that it wasn't working, it should be now.

I see that they've also reduced Kruber's Huntsman ability damage multiplier from 5 to 1.5, so that should curb the completely broken deleting of bosses.

I ran into a crash when I tried to load the game today. Following the new patch, it throws you into the prologue/tutorial by default. I changed quite a few of my keybindings, including jump and dodge, and this apparently causes a crash when you run the tutorial.

Fatshark's patch notes wrote:

Known Issues:
Custom Keybinds can halt the tutorial/prologue (reset these by deleting “save_data.sav” in ‘C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Fatshark\Vermintide 2’)

I'm going to try renaming the file and then overwriting after the tutorial, to try and preserve all of my settings and avoid messing up any of my progression up to this point. I presume this bug wont affect anyone loading up the game for the first time after this point, or anyone who didn't rebind any of the keys covered in the tutorial.

EDIT: For the record, saving the file and overwriting didn't help anything, as whether or not you've done the tutorial seems to be saved in that same file. Just delete it as Fatshark suggests.

A use for non-endgame crafting!

If you know the hero power/item drop formula, it means that item drops are going to have a power of roughly the highest power you've seen in each slot, averaged out, plus or minus a small random factor.

That means that if you have a run of bad luck like me, and don't roll a new melee item in about a dozen chests, it's worth crafting a new melee item. (I was up to ~115 in the other 4 slots for max seen, but still stuck at 100 on melee)

I'm still hoarding commendation chests until I can crack 200 max power, or they unlock red/legendary drops.

BTW, fanatical (bundle stars) has VT2 on sale for $22.49.

Started playing this and I am digging it a lot. Need some good people to play with. Add me on steam and I'll Kruger you up.

I'm still trying to see which character speaks to me most, and it's becoming more a process of elimination (I just do not grok Sienna, despite my penchant for mages in most games).

Added! If there's GWJers playing, you'll usually find us in the Vermintide channels on the Twitch voice server.

I'll be playing way too much of this in the next couple months before I get distracted by whatever new and shiny comes along.

Always feel free to join my game if there is an open slot.

The wizard is quite hard. I always end up getting carried away by the bloodletting (and Saltzpyre yelling "YAAAAS Sienna, burn them ALL!") and forget to vent.

At least you go out in a blaze of glory.

I think after reading a few tips, it'll be better once the temp health from kills talent is picked up and I can vent without as much worry about losing that health. (But as it stands, I always forget to vent, but haven't exploded yet.)

I didn't play the last one, but I loved L4D so I'm in for this one. Excuse my newbishness.

I'm on the fence because I'm usually awful at these, but if there are some scrubs that are interested, let me know.

Pretty damn slick release trailer

So is the GWJ verdict that this is a buy?

I sure think it is if you like this sort of gameplay and mode. Upgrade from the original with larger maps, more diverse classes and a lot more enemies.

Is there a talent calc or builder available?
Also, do the ranged classes really play like ranged classes or hybrids with a bit more ammo?

Haven't seen a builder or calc yet, but this has been useful for me to see the talents across their class/specialization a bit more easily.

There's a build of the Waystalker that seems like it'd be mostly ranged, but I don't think I've noticed quite the capability with anyone else. It feels like the expectation is still that melee would be required in spots.

If you liked L4D2 and Vermintide 1, it feels like a great iteration on it. There were a few annoying parts in VT1 that feel like they've been addressed, but the fundamental advancement of melee compared to L4D2 is what makes the game so appealing to me.

I was using that heavily this past week, but be aware that they've been talking about a major redo of talents compared to beta. It's possible that there are/will soon be some inaccuracies on it, but even if there are, it should give you a sense of where each class is headed.

Hybrid. When a horde or boss comes, you'll be meleeing a lot no matter what you play. Usually one or two people have sniping weapons meant for taking out specials. Elf and Wizard can get away with mostly ranged once levelled up on lower difficulties.

Yeah, sounds like with launch that they made some major changes to passives and the talent trees (people are still sorting out what).

I really liked VT 1, so this was destined to be a hit. I really like the co-op more than anything, especially with the glut of non-co-op out there.

Because we keep debating it on twitch every night, here's my thoughts on opening chests based on the beta:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Vermintide/...

Learning the combat is reasonably well understood, but everyone keeps debating how to optimize the chests. As of the end of open beta, these are the two approaches I recommend:

Simple Strategy

  • Open everything on your highest level hero immediately
  • Salvage what you won't use.
  • Prioritize getting one hero to ~10 over all heroes to 4 to maximize salvage.
  • At the beginning and/or end of the play session, figure out which slots have the lowest "max power seen" and craft one or two of each, lowest first.
  • If you want a weapon on your alt, craft it to avoid losing out on salvage.

Strategy

  • Open all chests on the highest level character you have to maximize salvage.
  • If average "max power seen" is over 100 in all slots, recruit chests can all be opened immediately. Same for 200 and Veteran.
  • Salvage anything you can't use to fuel your crafting.
  • If "max power seen" is more than a few points behind on a slot compared to the others, craft one of that item.
    • If this is the melee or ranged weapon slot, now is the time to get your alt a new weapon. They're alts, they don't need a good weapon of every type. They just need one not-terrible weapon until you unlock all the templates at level 12ish.
    • What a few points means depends on how often you get a chest you can open for progression, and how often you're just getting one to salvage. I mostly get progression chests, and my rule of thumb is ~10 points behind the top slot's "max power seen".
  • If "max power seen" is pretty even across the board, open chests until they aren't.
  • Keep the highest power item you've ever seen for each slot, so it's easy to remember "max power seen". You'll still have to remember which hero has the biggest melee and ranged weapon, but it helps.
  • Should I save the commendation/champion chests until max power hits 200? The two main arguments are that reds (exotics) weren't dropping in the beta, and more rapid progression from 200->300. The first no longer applies, and I feel like I'm grinding to 200 at a reasonable pace, so I can afford to stockpile these for an immediate jump once I hit 200, instead of relying solely on crafting and the group's ability to handle champion. I also opened the first few I ever got, and would do it again to get my max power seen closer to 50 than 5.
  • Should I save general's and emperor's chests? Meh. Your main should hit level 10 before you have more than a few of these. Save them if your gear looks balanced I guess, but it's not a big deal.

Mechanics

  • Hero power is based on character level and the average power of the 5 items equipped. More hero power good.
  • The fastest way to advance power to 100 is to finish recruit missions quickly, which is the opposite of VT1. Grims and tomes aren't a huge deal, raising the amount of salvage by raising item rarity, and a 100 power orange item is only marginally helpful.
  • Power of a chest drop is based on "max power seen" averaged across the 5 item slots, plus or minus a small random factor. (10? 10%? unclear)
    • "Max power seen" is determined by drops across all 5 heroes, even if the item has since been salvaged.
  • Item rarity is gated by level. I saw mostly whites until maybe level 4, and didn't see blues regularly until level 8 or so. At ~18 I see greens and some blues from a soldier's chest, and vice versa from a general's chest, and mostly blues from an emperor's chest. I'm not sure it's changed much since level 10.
    • It's probably okay to open soldier recruit chests on level 4 alts, general recruit chests on level 8 alts, etc. without losing out on salvage, and anything you get will be 100 power if your "max power seen" is over ~110. That guideline is mostly just from seeing what I get when opening on a level ~18 main and comparing to my alts. Still missing out on the rare orange drop I think though, so I only do it to get a single decent melee and ranged to tide me until I unlock a template to craft. Also, it's a lot easier to salvage a bunch of 100 power gear on my main, since it's sorted by power, and I haven't kept any 100 power gear for my main.
  • Opening Veteran chests does nothing for you until you hit ~90 in each slot. Same for Champion/Commendation and ~190.
    • Only the maximum power constraint matters on the chest. If your "max power seen" is 80, all chests are equivalent when opened, because you're not going to get items over 100 anyway.

I'm giving this one a go.

I bounced off VT1, but I think that was more of a graphics thing.

I typically only play with my friend in Japan once a week but we are extremely excited to dig into the sequel tomorrow.
