This week I received a review copy of a game that I wouldn’t have even glanced twice at, but I don’t feel comfortable giving it my game of the week nod because a) I’ve already played it, and thus cannot be looking forward to playing it; b) I’ve got a review of it slated to run on Thursday already; and c) I just want to keep you in suspense.

Instead, I’ll play to type, and pick a little oddball that probably won’t get anyone’s attention outside of this little write up. The Way of the Passive Fist is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in the style of all of those classic licenced games of the mid-1990s, but with a twist. Instead of emphasizing combos and power, the player has weak attacks and must instead wear his opponents out by parrying all their hits until they become exhausted and can be knocked out with a gentle shove.

With a fantastic period-appropriate art style and a just-crazy-enough-to-work concept, The Way of the Passive Fist gets my pick for Game of the Week.

What's old continues to be new again as sequels, DLC, re-releases and remakes populate the list. I'd love to choose Final Fantasy XV again, what with the PC release and all, but that would be dishonest of me. Similarly dishonest would be to pick Flinthook again, even though it is undoubtedly the one title I'm most excited about. Talk about a stealth announcement for Switch!

Perhaps I've been oblivious, but I'm shocked to see Scribblenauts is still kicking. Showing up to Showdown this week, you can wage a family-friendly war of imagination right there in your living room. Speaking of forgotten properties, you remember Fear Effect, right? From 1999? It's back, in RPG form! The latest Square Enix Collective title is Fear Effect Sedna, reviving a franchise played by no one I've ever met in meatspace. Comment below if you have any fond memories of the prior games! What do you think of this shift in genre?

For me, I'm going to have to go with Warhammer: Vermintide 2. Valve refuses to make actual video games these days, so I'll take whatever resembles Left 4 Dead as closely as I can get.

Way of the Passive Fist continues the rebirth of the brawler with another indie that looks good, but you have no idea how fudgy the controls are.

Assassin's Creed Origins: The Curse of the Pharaohs continues a strong line of DLC for the game that made Assassin’s Creed great again. Explore Thebes, taking on giant scorpions and undead kings? You had me at “pharoah”. My pick of the week.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Is this the time I finally buy a DJMax game? Prices never seem to come down low enough for me to buy. I guess the pricing makes sense since licensing music is so expensive ... I think?

*barfs everywhere*

Pretty sure I played Fear Effect but I don’t remember much about it and so don’t really have any feelings about the new game.

I have a copy of FFXV that I haven’t played yet that I got cheap. I bet by the time I get around to playing it, the Royal edition will be cheap... or, hey, maybe even a further collection with the upcoming DLC.

This is why I haven't bit on that $5 deal at RedBox.

Curse of the Pharaohs DLC for AC Origins has been delayed a week. Will be out on the 13th. This week (tomorrow, the 6th) there is a preparatory game update including an introductory quest line for the new Valley of the Kings area, and some new weapon and armor DLC.

This week's patch also nerfs a weapon I already paid for, so I'm not particularly happy about that. "Balance changes" for a non-competitive single player game are nonsensical. I've asked for a refund, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's not listed, so I'm mentioning it: Northgard left early access to release as 1.0 today. It looks like a unique RTS, with aspects of a traditional RTS, a 4X game with multiple victory conditions, and Banished. I'm quite tempted. Currently, the best price is at GamersGate, which activates on Steam.
