Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

Part of the update today is that the amount of coins you get has changed. Unfortunately, it's not retroactive.

So, to pull some numbers out of the air, if I've spent $400 (that's a lot!) on digital Switch games up to this point, Nintendo has rewarded me 400 gold coins, and at the new exchange rate of 1 coin == $0.01, I now have $4 to spend towards a new game?

Y'all are like "1% cashback in reward points? Pffft."

I'm all like "name ONE other rewards systems from a corporation that does any better (that doesn't also have an annual fee)."

Amazon/Whole Foods has a new card that gives 5% cash back on all Amazon/Whole Foods purchases.

Amazon has had 5% back for a long time. Plenty of cards have 2% back. Lowe's has 10% discount on their card. Best Buy has more than 1%. Toys R Us has 5%. Hotel rewards programs are typically around 10%. The list goes on...

My biggest complaint with this change is they did not backport the valuation for current Switch owners. So those of us who spent a lot of money with them in the past year are not worth as much as future spenders.

Is it confirmed if here is a performance difference if the Switched is docked or not?

I won't add to the above lists of corporations that do this. I'll just add that even if there weren't any other companies doing this (and there aren't any video game companies doing it), it's still a really sh*tty thing.

It sets expectations/creates excitements with consumers around loyalty. When they make the program worthless, people are understandably more frustrated than if they never offered the program in the first place.

Lastly, they clearly spent time and money building the coin infrastructure. Aside from the rewards, the functionality of the program is pretty nice, especially for Nintendo. What a waste!

It's also 5% going forward for digital purchases, which is pretty good. They're not discounting physical, most likely because of stuff like Amazon preorder discounts.

Up to developers to implement, so it varies game by game.

I’ve heard it two ways. Docked is more performant because it’s not on battery power and can speed us the clock. On the other hand frequently games run better when they don’t have to drive a TV display.

Thanks for the clarifiaton.

Now.. isit just me.. or does the Switchs speakers suck... i need headphones when i am playing in tablet mode

Speakers on mobile devices suck. Switch is no exception.

I just wish my bluetooth headphones worked with it. I wonder if this will be a thing like the original iPod Touch, where the device actually had bluetooth, but it wasn't enabled until a software update
Edit: It's somehow kinda fitting that Nintendo is somehow both years ahead in their tech, and simultaneously behind the times. I'm not saying I like the practice of phone manufacturers ditching the headphone jack, but for Nintendo to not have bluetooth is kinda funny to me.

well ghen i guess it is back ot useing headphones while in tablet mode alll the time heheh

What's really a good time is if you have a new iPhone or a newer Android phone without a headphone jack and you've made the switch. Suddenly you find yourself packing around 2 sets of headphones. I literally went on vacation a couple weeks ago and had my Lightning earbuds and my regular earbuds. Good times.

Ah so we’ve gone from “a flashlight is just a flashlight” to “Oh, Diablo is coming to Switch!”

Cool. Bring it on!

As much as I <3 EG, their track record for Switch rumors hasn't exactly been stellar.

Edit: 30 minutes and 3DS info? Guess I'll keep my expectations in check.

So it will only be Retro's game, Smash, Sakurai's new game, Nintendo DOTA, Half Life 3, NES/SNES/N64/GameCube joycons, cloud saves and a $500 check from Nintendo for my MyNintendo coins.

This is among the reasons I've just kept using my dongle and keeping that on me. One headphone, a dongle, and can use on any device. But yeah, not exactly convenient.

Nintendo has a knack for shoving a lot of info into 30 minutes. I imagine this'll follow the same pattern as some of the prior directs where they have the list of items to touch on.

Crossing fingers for details of the new Fire Emblem, release dates for Hollow Knight and Battle Chasers on Switch, release date for Wolfenstein II, and at least one delightful surprise.

I know it’s not possible to start a new save in Zelda without erasing the old save. However, can you transfer the save to another profile or something like that? From what I’ve seen in the settings menu there’s nothing like that. Basically I would like to get going on Zelda again, but it’s been so long since I’ve played that I feel like I should probably start over again. I’m not quite sure, though, so I want the ability to go back if I change my mind.

Make a secondary profile on your Switch and start your second run on that one.

I'm expecting Fire Emblem to be a focus here. Maybe Retro is taking on a Fire Emblem game. That would be totally unexpected. Oooor we officially get the Metroid Prime 4 announcement. I still think FE is coming sooner rather than later.

The timing on the Diablo 3 tease seems too coincidental, my guess is it might get a mention but not a release date since Blizzard is glacial.

I'm expecting 20 minutes of Labo. Then 10 minutes of Yoshi and Sushi Striker.

In other words I don't have high expectations and anything else that's shown will just be a bonus

FE is definitely coming before Metroid Prime 4, and I think Retro working on Fire Emblem would be... outside their wheelhouse, but perhaps too much so given the primary fanbase of FE. Donkey Kong was certainly outside their first-person adventure wheelhouse, but it still felt more in-tune with their sensibilities of reviving an older property. It helps that Rare was a similar Western studio.

We probably won't hear anything about Metroid Prime 4 until E3, which is also probably when we'll hear about the new Pokemon. I'm not expecting either of those games yet.

We won't hear about Pokémon at E3 because any reveal will happen in Japan via NicoNico or Famous beforehand.

Pokemon is totes their big title for holiday 2018.

I was mostly spitballing about Prime 4.

I completely forgot about Labo. I'm wondering if they'll do that in its own thing again. The original trailer sits at 12 million views on YouTube, which sits as one of their most-viewed videos.

And I'm continuing my stake on Fire Emblem. It's definitely coming, though maybe they'll wait until after Labo launches to fully talk about it. But coming it is and this Direct would be a good time to at least show us a teaser. More details in the month before launch.

Meaning shop is probably spot on about this being Labo (launch April 20) focused with some other teases, like FE (launch May?? June?? no later than July).

The question about FE is if it will still have combat or if it will be a full-on romance simulator.
