BEER Thread!

Founders is my favorite brewery, so this is great news for me: Backwoods Bastard and Breakfast Stout will be available year-round beginning in 2018!

Those are both favorites of mine as well. Is it ok to have Breakfast Stout with dinner?

Only if you have breakfast foods for dinner.

I am a firm believer in breakfast freedom

and stout beers (to get back thread topic)

I prefer fried eagle and waffles, but pancakes work too I guess.

I'm worried enough about conversations with the SS about the things I've posted on this forum, i'm not frying any eagles.

However some Beasley's Chicken and Waffles are good anytime.

Gotcha covered there.

Happy Prohibition Repeal Day!

Rise, Beer Thread, rise!

So, this may very well be on deck for a Board Game Day on the 17th. A friend acquired six years of Three Floyd's Dark Lord for a vertical tasting. Getting thirsty just thinking about it.

Nice!

Jealous!

Whoa now, that looks amazing! I've been unfortunate enough to have never even tried a Dark Lord, of this or any year. Someday...

A small brewery local to me went ahead and finally did something I've always thought should be tried and aged scotch ale in actual scotch barrels (Islay no less). It's peaty and smoky and insane in all the ways it should be. I love a good very peaty scotch, so it's right on for me. It's certainly not for everyone, though - you really do have to enjoy Islay scotch to get anything out of this beer, otherwise you are definitely going to hate it.

Stone Brewing Company is suing MillerCoors

Good for them. They make some of the best beer around and they have a convincing argument.

This is over 3 years old, but I don't remember seeing it in this thread. It's amazing, so I wanted to share.

Awesome video! I love Mikkeller, Texas Ranger is the best chili beer I've had. The current Chipotle Porter isn't nearly as good. Also Santa's Little Helper, though the current bottle is a puny 0.33l, back in the day it was in 0.75l bottles. One of those bad boys and the holiday stress was a thing of the past!

PSA: Anyone holding on to 2013 Bourbon County Stout, feel free to crack that bottle open. Shared mine on Saturday with friends and it was pretty incredible. Personal experience is that 4-5 years is the sweet spot for aging BCS. If this came across as more of a humble brag than a true aid to the beer drinking GWJ Community, I don't apologize!

How did you store it? I have two bottles of 2016 Surly Darkness. Both are on a shelf stored horizontally and covered (so no light gets to it). Did you store yours in the refridgerator or somewhere else?

I also have 3 bottles of port that I'm storing. Each purchased the same year that my 3 boys were born. When they turn 21 we will share the bottles. They are being stored the same way.

I had it at 50F in a temperature controlled chest freezer. Prior to me receiving it a year ago, it was similarly held at a steady, cool temperature. If the Darkness has been closer to 70F than 50F, maybe you open one later this year and test it and decide how much longer to age the other. As for the Port, you can keep them a long time, however, they are unlikely to mature in the bottle, as most are fortified and filtered with the characteristics are effectively locked in. There are exceptions, though, with Vintage Ports. Reasonable article HERE. FYI, I love Ports. That is a cool idea, regardless of type.

The darkness is 12%. It is stored in the basement which is pretty consistently about 65 degrees. Unfurtnately, I just realized (after 14 years) that the shelf I'm storing them on is just inches from a bulkhead that contains heating vent. So I opened the vent up to see how close it gets to the beer and port. The answer, thankfully, is not very close. The vent ends about 4 feet from the wall where I have the stash. I don't think it has had much effect on things. The darkness was stored at about 70 for the year before I purchased it.

I didn't mention the King Sue but it's only a few months old. I doubt it will make it the year. It's only 8.5%.

Should be ok, though there is no benefit IMO of ever aging an IPA or DIPA. Drink those suckers ASAP. Fresher the better. Once an IPA enters a can or bottle the clock is ticking.

Thanks. With the IPA I'm just trying not to drink it all today. This way I have to think about it ahead of time and chill it before drinking it. If I kept it in the fridge and it was cold it would have been gone a week from when I bought it. I am a weak man when it comes to Imperial/Double IPAs.

Yup, the best way to age an IPA is in your belly. I picked up a 4 pack of Pipeworks (Chicago) DIPA, “Ninja vs Unicorn” to bring home along with a bunch of other MN beers. Stopping at Dangerous Man tomorrow.

Seen on r/craftbeer:

I can't tell if that's a joke or not.

Any Tampa natives stand in line for AC's barrel aged stout? I heard at one point the line was 700+ and was causing traffic issues around the city. Holy moly.

AC = Angry Chair?

I had to do a Google search. Looks interesting.

Yep. Angry Chair released their german chocolate imperial stout this morning. It usually comes with much fanfare. It's also Tampa Bay Beer week so it's a pretty big deal for those who went.
