Buying Zero Games in 2018 (Or One or Two, I'm Not the Boss of You)

Welp, that was 15 days without a purchase, but today I got all the Vermintide DLC I've been eyeing, since we're gonna stream it this week. Still, that's pretty good for me! Progress!

FFXII came out on PC... $40.00 so tempted, but I really want to wait to play it until I get a new PC. So, bitcoin miners are actively helping me not buy games. Thanks?

This makes me wonder, is getting a pre-built computer now the way to get a cheaper graphics card?

I was going down the troubleshooting/replace components on the PC I built 6-7 years ago that my son uses. You can get a i5, 8gb RAM, 1TB sata drive and a GTX 1060 for $720 from Dell. It's not going to blow the doors off anything, but for 1080p, it'll work just fine. The 1060 was $389 at Newegg alone.

Needless to say, I ordered and it will be here next week.

A game I wasn't sure was going to come out this year turns out to be coming out on the 27th. I really don't need to buy it, right?

Which is it? There's only elevintybillion games coming out on 2/27. Into the Breach...Space Tyrant...

I have bought two this year but they were both used so I feel a bit better about that.

Into the breach.

Yeah, that one might get me as well.

Dude, you’re supposed to talk me out of it.

Why? It's the FTL guys! C'mon now.

I haven't bought anything since Dec 23 - and that was a micropurchase for an idle clicker. Before that was the Necro expansion for Diablo sometime early this Diablo season. Previous to that was MedievalTW on Steam sale and Endless Legend collection at the beginning of 2017, but I didn't like either much, and returned MTW a day later. Kept Endless Legend, but I don't really dig it. I'm a very stingy gamer with a job. Previous to those two was... wow - XCOM Enemy unknown in late 2012.

Geez, I'm not really helping to revitalize the economy much, am I?

I have a tough time if I buy a game and don't end up loving it. I typically buy just 1-2 games a year and play the hell out of them. Hundreds of hours per game. Old games get revisited often. This isn't a budget issue, it's more of the game of gaming games.

Buy well, love lots!

I'm likely gonna break my streak for this tomorrow:

So... I've been thinking about putting my money where my boasty mouth is. This is five pages of people that have posted.

Who has stayed game-purchase-free since the beginning of the year?

I will go back and tally everyone that has, and I might have an idea that would be fun.

You started this thread.

I'm one of those.

I show 24 (edited, 21) with no purchases since the beginning of the year!

Jonman, you were questionable, you just dropped in and added a comment, but I wanted to be fair.

Oh I've definitely made purchases, I'm just working to minimize them.

I purchased Iconoclasts last month, and have already prepaid Secret of Mana and Bayonetta 1+2 this month. However, there's plenty I've managed to resist, such as Monster Hunter World and Shadow of the Colossus, so I'm free of impulse purchases so far.

You can take me off that list. For one, I was never on Team Zero in the first place - my "allowable" purchases include Steam sales, Humble Monthly, and anything I buy for my wife/daughter to play.

Within those confines, I've done pretty well.

Humble Monthly
Red Rope: Don't Fall Behind to play co-op with the wife.
A couple of Teddy Floppy Ear games for my daughter to play.

All Walls Must Fall and a $2 DLC for 868-HACK have been the only self-indulgent purposes this year.

Like I said I would when this thread started, I pre-ordered Shadow of the Colossus at the start of the year so I wouldn't have to dig my PS3 out. Otherwise I've held strong so far.

I will be really tempted by both Dark Souls and Valkyria Chronicles 4, though.

I have a Humble Monthly subscription that is still giving me games, but I haven't spent any money on games in 2018, does that count?

Always have been, always will be.

Whew! No idea! Excellent question. How does it make you FEEL?

To be clear, if someone's actually going to track this, I think keeping track of days is more interesting. I'm pretty proud of the fact that I haven't purchased a game since 1/3.

Android Humble Bundle got me. It actually had 3 games I was pretty interested in and gave me some stuff to try out on my new Kindle Fire. Typically I'm an iOS user. A steal for $5.

Still, I completely resisted PSN's offerings this week.

Anyway, reset to 3 days.

I haven't purchased anything, though I have added items to my steam wishlist. I think the most likely outcome for me is I make it to the end of year steam sales and buy a handful of things then.

Love the idea of tracking. The accountability/challenge aspect of it will keep me strong!

Ted - Has games he's looking at.

Yep, still going strong. Stronger, in fact. I'm dropping my caveats in favor of a 100% no-purchase year:

* Bloodborne: The Old Hunters - I decided to start watching a Let's Play and this looks way harder than the base game. I'm not up for that level of challenge.
* Assassin's Creed: Origins - I can wait until next year for a deep discount.

Turning off all my alerts for Humblebundles and other deals has kept this rather easy for me. That with my PS+ subscription and huge backlog, I find it refreshing to not be worried about buying something that I won't play. I'm actually now looking at my physical backlog, and thinking about getting rid of some games as well to further fund my purchase of a switch by the end of the year. I know I'm not going back to play them, so might as well pass along the joy.

I got 75% off vouchers fro some Pinball FX3 table packs so I spent my first money on games this year. About $2.50.

I am game free since the beginning of the year, but will allow exceptions for any game I play with my wife. And also any Christmas presents I buy myself on super sale.
