Do any of you remember Rocky’s Boots? It was a PC game in 1982 that had players using logic circuits to kick a ball. I couldn’t honestly say it represented the genesis of my interest in engineering, but it’s certainly near the origin point.

Second Avenue Learning appears to be trying to follow in Rocky’s boot prints and is releasing an entire series of STEM-themed educational software this week, with modules in electricity, optics, and simple machines. Games like these are a great way to expose kids to engineering and let them decide if it’s something they want to do with their lives.

Will Martha Madison inspire a new generation of makers? Time will tell, but in the meantime the Martha Madison series gets my nod for game(s) of the week.

February and March promise to be much more tumultuous months for me in regards to games begging for my cash and time. Even though February is crowded with remakes and rereleases, they are remakes and rereleases of some truly special games that stand the test of time.

Shadow of the Colossus looks absolutely gorgeous, adopts more modern and streamlined controls, and – based on press response – adheres to the original game's artistry without bone-headed efforts to make it more appealing. Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition lands upon every platform available, tempting me with its availability on the portable and – for me – couch co-op-capable Switch. Dragon Quest Builders also breaks blocks and slimes on the Switch, and answers the question of what I next try to encourage my niece to play on hers.

For me, though, the pick is going to indie game Dandara. Between this and Black Panther, I've come to wonder if perhaps we should rename February "Making Black History Month". Based upon the historical figure of the same name, Dandara looks to be an explorational action-platformer that seeks to use the woman's history to tell a tale of the fight for freedom against an oppressive machine. For both its narrative ambitions and gravity-defying mechanical prowess, I choose Dandara as my game of the week.

For us Civheads, 2018’s release schedule officially begins, and possibly ends, this week. Rise and Fall, the first expansion for Civilization 6, arrives!

Admittedly, I would be interested if it just introduced customisable unit uniforms or a rotting fruit mechanic. But it’s bigger than that. As the name suggests, there is potential for your civ to decline. You will get a score for each Era that your civ moves through, and that score determines whether your civ enters a Golden Age or a Dark Age. I’m guessing Dark Ages are not ideal. Cities will have individual loyalty ratings, with the potential for your city to drop out of your civ and become independent if its loyalty gets too low. You’ll be able to install Governors in cities to manage loyalty, as well as build Government districts and whatnot. Also, spies can influence loyalty. I’m hoping this loyalty system will bring clarity to the obscure amenity mechanics.

Add in the usual bag o’tweaks that a Civ expansion has: more Civs and leaders (including Genghis Khan and the Mongols, w00t), more units, wonders, finessed diplomacy, and I’m either going to love this expansion, or spend hundreds of hours discovering why I don’t (who am I kidding? I’ve never been mad at Civ). There will probably be the usual controversy about whether the combat AI will be improved. I reckon the November 2017 patch made the AI better at naval combat and taking cities, but everyone seems to have their own story about the AI being bone-headed or OP. Anyhoo, I’m excited and you should be, too.

Sweet, thanks for pointing this out as I completely skip the PC release list due to it being a schizophrenic word salad.

Huh, and here I though it was only coming to Switch, which means I assumed it was simply a basic port. Turns out I need to look into this as I liked Mercenary Kings when it came out but it needed some refinement. Time to see if the Reloaded edition does that.

Edit: Yup, adding new characters, a new map and some much needed QoL improvements.

Played the hell out of Rocky's Boots (and Gertrude's Secrets) when I was a wee'un

Me too, in glorious CMYK CGA graphics. There's an IOS puzzle game called 'Circuit Coder' that's a rather more complex version of the same idea.

I've been playing the Dragon Quest Builder demo on the Switch and it's enjoyable- I have enough that I'm not likely to jump on it right away though, and in the back of my mind I can't forget that I can play it for half as much on the PS4 (or free if I'm willing to get it from the library for a week at a time)

Well that explains why Civ 6 showed up in this month's Humble Gamble! I just polished off my first game (Science win with Germany on Prince), so a ruleset tweak might be just what hte doctor ordered!

Anime girl or bottle
That game should be easy enough.

Happy to see Aegis Defenders on the list! I kickstarted it and should be receiving my download code for it soon, which has me pretty excited as it's the first game I throw money at that makes it to release.

I'm ready for a new top front page post. That furry girl whatever thing needs to go away now.

Just because you're turned on by furries doesn't mean we need to change the front page just for you.
