Speed Runs Catch-All

Looking forward to dropping into AGDQ, those guys do a good job of giving a lot of attention to the lesser known runners out there, and looks like quite a few on the list this year!

Also, the WR for Ocarina of Time any% has been beaten again by Jodenstone! He beat the old record by 3 seconds, and judging by his reaction, it must have taken him some effort.

So the current record stands at 18 minutes and 7 seconds. Absolutely incredible to think a game that I thought would take an eternity to complete has been pulled apart to the point people can get to the end that fast!

Those tetris runs were sick. I got stressed out when the tetris blocks turned into [ ] brackets.

Favorite moments so far:

  • Dark Forces II - Quadruple force speed equals one insanely fast broken run
  • I Wanna Be The Boshy - Great fun commentary plus a super skilled run through one of the hardest games ever
  • TASBot - Unimaginable. I cannot believe the amount of dedication those hackers must have.
  • Mischief Makers - I've been following jackafur for a couple years now and to see him propose to his girlfriend after his run nearly had me in tears.

People have complained that this year's marathon has been lame and sterile but looking at this list so far I'd have to disagree. And we still have so much more coming!

I don't know the guy, but seeing that moment live was so heartwarming. Mischief Makers just happened to be one of the only N64 games a cousin owned, so I played that game a bunch when I was young. Definitely going to look up a no restriction speed run. It was good to at least see that skill from my 11yr old recollection.

For all those that didn't see the Tetris mayhem (including play INVISIBLE TETRIS at one point in a speedrun) then the video is up on Youtube. Includes a few different runs, so you may need to move about a bit to find them, but a lot of their commentary is interesting. Also astonishing to hear these guys say so many times that there are players actually better than them in Japan!

Edit: There's a guy in the comments who puts up links to the times for each run. Seriously, you need to check them out!

The end credits insanity of invisible tetris starts right around 1:11:00.

Resurrecting this thread to inform everyone- SGDQ is live now through July 10th.

Right now is the classic Mega Man block!!

Loved Skyblazers and the first of many Mega Man blocks! Wish we could embed Twitch streams in here.

Hey! Listen!

I just noticed AGDQ 2017 started yesterday!

Wow, I totally forgot this thread existed. I need to check beyond page one of my favorites more often.

The Borderlands 2 run is worth watching, especially the glitch exhibition at the end. I also recommend the Metal Gear Solid 2 run.

Watching all of these awesome speed runs makes me want to go back and replay a bunch of old favorites.

Honestly you should try speedrunning them! After watching AGDQ a couple years ago I finally decided I would try speedrunning Super Metroid since it is my favorite game of all time. And honestly it was many times more fun than simple playing through the game casually. I got to learn lots of awesome tricks and by streaming on twitch I got to meet a lot of awesome people who love the game as much as I do. I highly encourage it.

TASbot at AGDQ 2017 (starts at 29:00 in that video) -- seriously impressive stuff. Basically, they use a Raspberry Pi with a pre-recorded script to send controller inputs to real NES and SNES hardware. It's stunning what they've done.

I'm only going to mention this here because I used to run this game, but SummoningSalt has put out another excellent world record breakdown of the ubiquitous Super Metroid:

Basically its a documentary showing you the strats, drama, and overall history of speedrunning for a particular game. I really recommend watching it.

If you enjoy it I'd also encourage you to check out his other videos. He has great ones about Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario World, and Punch Out.

PSA: Summer Games Done Quick starts up in just over a week (Jul 2 - Jul 9).

Super excited! Even though I will be on a cruise ship for most of it. The important question is, will SGDQ have the Story of the President of the United States in it?!

I also, I just checked the tentative schedule and it's starting off with Halfcoordinated doing a one-handed, one-hour speed run of NieR: Automata! That is crazy!

PSA: Awesome Games Done Quick starts up this coming weekend (Jan 7 - Jan 14).

Thanks for posting, I totally forgot about it this year!

They started up a non-live rebroadcast of last year's event on their Twitch for anyone interested.

All I care about is Awful block.

Well not *all* I care about, but definitely most important.

Couldn't find anywhere else appropriate to post this, but the world's first ever "professional gamer" Todd "Mr. Activision" Rogers has recently been found out to be a total fraud, who was inputting his own records into Twin Galaxies; the record website Guiness World Records works with. He was known as the man with the most gaming records in the world. This all came about due to his time record in a game called Dragster, in which his record stood for many years. Players pulled the game apart with tool assisted speedruns and found out that the time he gave was impossible.

If Twin Galaxies does ring a bell, it's because it was heavily featured in the great documentary King of Kong. On which subject, villain of the story Billy Mitchell is also under the microscope for cheating, apparently using an emulator for some of his high scoring runs.

Wow that is nuts. Looking through those Donkey King GIFs makes it pretty clear that something fishy is going on, and Billy's strange attitude toward that game always felt a bit suspicious. Pretty fascinating stuff.

Curse has some interesting moments from this year's AGDQ. Nice guide if you want to see some more interesting runs.

The dual Punch-Out run was awesome. After zallard1 did blindfolded runs before, I didn't think there was anything left to do with the Punch-Out games, but I was thankfully wrong.

Some new statistical analysis draws the conclusion that his high score run was very likely pieced together from multiple runs.
