Scarriest moment from Zot 4-end was right there. He effed me up some. Lot of minions died finishing him off.

Well done, Fuzzball!

Very nice Fuzzball.

Some quick numbers (note that there were no teams in 0.8 that I could find):

0.17 we peaked with the most number of players. That was definitely a good time in the game. I still think it's one of my favorite versions. Maybe by 0.18 the normal tournament players were getting burned out, but there were also a lot of changes to the game during that time most people weren't happy about. This current version, 0.21, is my favorite in a while.

Even though 0.17 had the most players, we were steamrolling in 0.16 (edit: Forgot this was melee-bug tournament, so keep that in mind). Still, that was when we had a lot more players? What constitutes a "good" tournament?

IMAGE(https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQiEoHjM7m5yU5BEEThB1S2_96x7LXSt0tZgGTDI6OXiRJmvf1RLy7jhd22wsWPwXPtY8v0QzuRuxCF/pubchart?oid=669510634&format=image)

Here are the wins per player when looking at GWJ as a whole. Going back to 0.16, we collectively had more wins than we had players! (edit: Again, probably due to the melee bug.) That doesn't mean everyone won at least one game, just that as a group we won a lot. Based on this, 0.21 was our third-best tournament yet. We didn't have as many players, but we won a lot of games.

Here's the tournament winrate over time. You can see the upward trend in the tournament winrate - is the game getting easier or are is the Crawl community collectively getting better over time? This would probably indicate that the growth of the community is flat or growing slowly.

The real takeaway from the last plot is that if you take the last several tournaments where we had a representative sample size (and ignore 0.16), GWJ is collectively better than the Crawl community writ large.

Nice graphs, thanks. I would love to see a winrate per day for the tourney as well, where did you find the info?

Was 0.16 the version with the double-damage bug?

Yes, it was.

Edit: Also, I think people streaming on YouTube like Demise and Ultraviolent are helping people get better at the game faster. I don't think it is easier: if it is, it is not by much.

I don't know if they track that, but anecdotally it starts high and gets lower as the tournament goes on. If you click the links along the top of the tournament pages they have all kinds of interesting stats:

http://dobrazupa.org/tournament/0.21...

Also, I have links to all of the team pages in the OP.

Yes, for those that missed this big "oops", there was a bug in the 0.16 version that caused all melee attacks to do double damage. I believe it was due to a messed up commit when changing the Infusion spell. It was fixed about one week into the tournament, but I don't believe they adjusted the scores or did anything tourney-wise.

Great job everyone. I however, feel like I earned a banner of shame this tournament, only played a handful of games and never really got anything off the ground. Some was other games competing for my attention and perhaps more so, just wasn't feeling it this go round.

Nah, you did fine.

Anybody who plays in the tourney is a winner. If you play one game, that is fine. If you never sniff a win, that is fine. If you get pissed off and stop playing for the better part of a week, that is fine. If you get busy in the middle of it, that is fine. The best part is a group of people who are playing this at the same time, talking, asking for help, sharing wins and bitter defeats, having fun: that's what matters.

Personally, the last three tournaments have each randomly been two weeks of work hell for me. Correlation is not causation and all that, but it is uncanny how Monday after the tournament starts work turns into a dumpster fire.

How often do these tournaments happen?

About every six months, when the next "major" version is "released". So this tournament was for version 0.21, then next (prob somewhere around June/July) will be for version 0.22.

I know I had a great time! I always seem to have my most promising run at the tail end of the tournament and end up not being able to complete (a.k.a "die") in time for it to count. I guess there's always next tournament!

I have finally got to late Lair as a caster. Doing the Centaur Air Elementalist thing based on ultraviolent's series.

This is REALLY hard compared to fighter which is hard compared to Berzerker to get to mid game with:) hehe. Challenge level escalation...happy i'm getting further and further on a normal basis though.

And died to petrification right after i frickin posted....hadn't found a single damn bit of MR, had dealt fine with several of the cloud breathers but one surprised me in a corner on a hard entry and i couldn't get out of it:( re-got me on the blink and died.

And got my next mage attempt into Lair right off again, definitely gotten better.

The furthest I've taken a mage is 2 runes. Always end up either being one shotted if I play a glass cannon or just don't have the power to kill enough and get overwhelmed if I go the draconian route. But yeah, congratz on getting good enough so fast to get down to the Lair consistently with a mage.

Just a usual day with Yred...

I'm seeing now why experienced Crawlers say that Yred will carry you to a 3-Rune victory without a sweat. I'm clearing Vaults now and it's ridiculously easy. Three Profane Servitors by themselves would be enough, but add on half a dozen skeletal warriors, a handful of vampire knights, and untold ghouls etc and it's a cakewalk. I've been wearing an Amulet of Faith the entire game and the gifts have been rolling in.

However, I can imagine a time near at hand where these dudes will become too outclasses by the enemies, for example in lower Depths or Zot.

Congrats to all on a fun tournament! I'm glad I jumped in.

I picked up a tip from a good guide written mid summer, i'll find it again and link it tonight, many may already have read it, for casters.

Basically it was "training only spellcasting and main spell tree until you can cast at 4 or 5 power rating enough times to kill a few things" Then, branch and train your defenses and evokation or whatnot too.

It's made a difference so far in how far i get reliably. Because i'm not running into such a "i can't kill that quick enough" wall when i reach a pack of elephants or a 9 head hydra etc. The extra blow up more than makes up for less defense real early.

I was training defense and spellcasting from the get go before and running out of blow up steam. I was doing it wrong.

Now on a gargoyle caster, started with earth book, and feeling very good after Lair 4.

Welp, died in Zot5. Stepped on a Zot Trap which summoned a windstorm and blew me right into this: https://imgur.com/a/Exn0y

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/ma...

Next time I think I may need to ditch Yred and swap to TSO or something before Zot.

michaelh has played 1805 games, between 2012-02-29 04:13:54 and 2018-01-23 18:34:44, won 10 (0.6%), high score 14776171, total score 46913129, total turns 10112729, play-time/day 0:18:56, total time 28d+8:46:24.

680 hours... didn't really need to know that.

Still having major problems getting through Lair and into mid game with a pure mage / starting as mage.

Decided to go back to fighter a bit and build into a mage for extended, working so much better for me so far. Just don't wanna smack my head too many times in a row.

I lost a promising MiFi of Yred in Depths, but I did things in the wrong order. Yred can definitely lead to feeling safer than you actually are. Especially when you run into things like Spark Wasps that can blink over and around your army.

The promising run i have going right now:

Hoping to take into extended.

Heh, I'm in almost the exact same spot but with a GrGl. Oka was kind to me too:

Spoiler:

19222 | Lair:6 | Received a gift from Okawaru
19223 | Lair:6 | Found the +10 dark maul {crush}

25512 | Shoals:2 | Received a gift from Okawaru
25519 | Shoals:2 | Got a scorched arbalest {god gift}
25526 | Shoals:2 | Identified the +12 arbalest of Nagigir {elec, MR+} (Okawaru gifted it to you on level 2 of the Shoals)

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/ma...

I think yer god gifts might be slightly nicer so far.....most of mine have had huge downsides, like gloves with rF-....the hell i can't use that...

You havn't found any shield yet? Notice a 1 hand weapon but no shield in inventory.

I was using a buckler for a bit, but ditched it to that I could quickswitch to the arbalest. The last time I tried extended I went 1h+shield, but I'm heavily favoring 2h this time around. Dark Maul with finesse is going to be too good to pass up. Once I get M&F high enough, of course.

80027 | Abyss:3 | Got an abyssal rune of Zot

Almost 9k turns in Abyss. Worst. rune. ever.
