New TV Season 2017-18

Has anyone started watching Dark on Netflix? I just gave the first episode a watch last night, and I'm still on the fence about it.

Without getting spoilery, it's set in Germany and obviously produced in German, but they made the odd decision to go with a dub rather than subtitles, giving it a very GOZIRA-level awkwardness to the performance.

Keeping the German names also just sound weird coming out of an otherwise "Average American High School" English-speaking teenager. "Oh, Hi Gunter, have you seen Ulrich? Franziska and I were just hanging out, but then Bartosz and Magnus came over and asked if we were going to the Diskotek in Dusseldorf."

*Cut to 99 Luftbaloons*

Is this how French people feel when a movie set in mideval France is portayed by everyone speaking English in a Cockney accent?

There are some very interesting premises being set up, but it feels a bit like watching Stranger Things without getting the cultural references. I'll get over my US-Centered discomfort for the sake of the plot

You can turn on German audio and English subtitles.

For what it's worth, I usually put on subtitles anyway, and the differences between the onscreen text and the spoken dialog leads me to think the subtitles were done before the English actors did their lines.

American Crime Story second season wasn't for me. I checked out after 20 minutes. Multiple things turned me off. They had details that were impossible to know. Not a spoiler, there is creepy mimic scene. It didn't seem like the type of thing someone would talk about. It was just made up for the show that wasn't based on anything.

Mainly it was just boring. A big downfall from OJ.

Supergirl:

I'm kicking myself for not realizing the namesake of Fort Rozz was played by...

Spoiler:

...Sara Douglas, who played Ursa in the first two Superman movies.

The Alienist was interesting. Been a few decades since I read the book. Loved the book but don't recall much about it except major details. I thought the lady had a different personality and a greater focus was on her in the book. I could be wrong about that.

I liked the first episode enough to keep watching. I think they missed something though but I'm not sure what.

Counterpart was great. Started off a little slow but took off on the second half. Kind of reminded me of Fringe.

The whole concept seemed like a remake of Fringe's biggest plot point. I'm very interested.

The Alienist:

Now I've never read the book let alone knew such a book existed until the hoopla about the show, but...boy did they pick an interesting year to try to adapt this.

I *really* enjoyed Dark. It reminded me of the early seasons of Lost when everything was new and mysterious.

I get the comparison to Stranger Things, but it's not. I loved Stranger Things, but I gotta say I found Dark much more engaging (and adult). I already know I'm rewatching it because I just know there are heaps of things I missed.

This weeks Vikings was excellent. I was worried after last weeks episode which was a bit of a mess.

I'm halfway through Dark now, and I agree that it has that Lost "WTF is going on?" feel to it. The comparison to the Stranger Things was on how it relies on certain cultural references, which (as a kid in the US growing up in the 80s) I totally got, where in Dark feels like there's some references I'm missing.

I've been pretty disappointed with the new X-Files seasons, but this weeks episode was awesome!

It reminded me of some of my favorite past episodes. Hopefully the episodes keep getting better, regardless of tone.

After two episodes, I'm totally hooked. JK Simmons is fantastic. And the Fringe mentions are spot on. It's like a noir spinoff of Fringe.

That's basically all I need to know from a TV series. I'll go watch this immediately.

Yeah, I'm going to end up resuming to Starz for that.

Edit: Dang! this mac I'm using kicked on autocorrect. That's the most annoying computer thing I've encountered in ages. I meant resubbing.

Damn, me too.

To be clear, this is not related to the Fringe Universe in any way. It's more like a story that would make sense in the Fringe Universe, but there are some pretty key differences in how these two interact with each other compared to Fringe.

But it also has that element of government law enforcement dealing with a strange things that the public is not kept in the loop on. But there is no Walter, and there is no Gene providing fresh cream for Walter's conceptions.

Jessica Jones season 2 is coming March 8th.

Anyone else watching Britannia on Amazon Originals? Its an enigma to me. You start off thinking its about one thing and then it pivots. It's not a great show, but it is very intriguing. On one hand it has pacing and story flaws, yet, it's exactly the type of story I love.

The cast is pretty good, Kelly Reilly, David Morrissey are a couple of my favorites and put in solid performances as expected. The real gems are young actress Eleanor Worthington-Cox as Cait and Nickolaj Lie Kaas as Divis! It's worth watching just to see them act together.

Sigsbee and I are absolutely loving Altered Carbon. She even wanted to stay up extra late last night to squeeze in another episode!

Altered Carbon is really great. I'm halfway through now, and I have to limit myself to just two episodes a night so I don't finish the season too quickly.

Oh crap - Falling Water season 2 has started? If you enjoy AC and haven't seen Falling Water, go find season 1 and catch up!

What a time to be alive for fans of Willam Gibson-inspired work.

USA Network, though it looks like Season 1 isn't available through their USA Now app. Maybe through OnDemand with your cable provider, or you can buy the episodes individually through iTunes or Amazon.

Ah. I might be able to get a cable login I have to work. Not sure if it has USA, though.

My wife and I are liking AC a lot more than I had assumed we would. Although last night we stayed up for one more episode and it was dedicated to torture, and that was kind of rough. The Coco moment was pretty cool, though.

Really? We tried the first episode of Falling Water and found it ok, but I don't recall any Gibson connection. Maybe I would have had to get deeper in the series.

I went 3 or 4 into it and didn't see the connection.

The character Tess is very strongly based on Cayce Pollard from Gibson's Pattern Recognition
