Streamers with jobs

Awwww, thanks Pinkdino!

Hey, thanks to everybody who dropped by (Kamakazi, Wink, probably a few others that I didn't see) for the first episode of my and Drew's little web thing and watched me cringe through the first third of Doki Doki Literature Club. Some technical snafus around audio--as usual--but I had fun and it seemed like the crowd was into it. VOD is here (fair warning, this one is a lot more blue than most of the video stuff I try to do, but it was worth it--and it's not like the game's for kids anyway).

(Almost) every Tuesday, 8PM Eastern. Be there or be elsewhere! And feel free to let me know what you thought of that mess.

It was a lot of fun, glad I caught it

Tech help request...

Hey streamer goodjers. Noob streamer here.
I game with two monitors, one with the game, and twitch dashboard open on my second.
Is it possible to be able to type into Twitch to respond to people that are in chat without minimising my game to desktop ?

I'm using NVidea Ge-Force Experience to stream to Twitch.

You'd have to set the game as windowed, and not full screened, as far as I know. But typically, I'll just respond to chatters with voice, myself. But what do I know, I'm using OBS Studio.
Alternatively, you can use a tablet with Twitch opened to type in chat, but I feel it isn't all that great.

Going live in about ten minutes (stream's up now) for more Doki Doki Literature Club! https://twitch.tv/tracecomplete

Borderless Windowed mode is what you're looking for, for the game. There could be a small performance hit tough.

If you dig fighting games, we'll be rolling the Giant Bomb FGC Tekken 7 biweekly on my channel in about twenty minutes. Should be a fun time.

New streamer checking in! Just hoping the more experienced crowd can offer some advice.

Ok, so, I love SHMUPS. I started my Twitch channel to highlight them, to show off the genre to the world. I'm aware it's not very popular, nor is it something I'm going to gain a lot of followers doing. Regardless, I have fun playing them on stream and having recordings of 1 credit clears.

Small problem, I generally have to practice a new game for at least 2 weeks before I go for a full run attempt. Plus, those runs are only about 30 minutes. 30 minutes every 2-3 weeks, with no schedule? That sounds like a disastrous Twitch channel to me.

I'm not sure which direction I want to take the channel. I had a "Casual Sunday" stream where I ran novice modes of multiple games which was pleasant (no viewers though!), but other than that I don't know if I can stream SHMUPS all the time. I'm cautious to stray too far outside of my niche on Twitch, but I briefly considered just doing playthroughs of other games in my Steam library.

In short, would it be best to just stream a lot of the one genre -- or maybe just arcade games? Otherwise, would you set up a different channel for random "let's play" style footage?

Quick edit: How does everyone's schedules look? How often do you Stream?

I'm going to be out of town so we aren't having an It All Happens Here next week, but I think I'll sit down in my hotel room and bang out a little bit of code on the TowerCG stuff I need to finish the overlay for my channel. The goal is to make it unobtrusive but keep it present, and make it manageable from the same touch-based control setup that we use for audio and video controls. So that stream will be a little bit of code, little bit of stream tech, that sort of thing.

Schedule? What schedule? I stream in the evenings when I can. Sometimes I can't because family, kids, outings.
I'd say that playing only one kind of game isn't the best way to attract an audience, but I'm sure Veloxi will prove me wrong. The important thing, I'd say, is playing what you like and enjoy and just be yourself.

Hey, sticking with one niche has been great for me.

Why not stream the practice sessions as well? My impression of streaming is that most viewers simply like to watch you play - skill matters, but being entertaining matters more. Don't be afraid to fail onstream, it's all good fun.

I actually tried that yesterday! Was just shooting for a higher score each run. It was somehow really calming/cathartic to chatter into the void. I had a IRL friend drop by for a little while, but otherwise I was just playing and discussing what was on my mind as I passed each section. I think I'll do it some more

Space games! I may have to drop by some time when I see you online and check that stuff out. I have a soft spot for those things, but am awful at 95% of them!

Cool thanks for the advice. I think the main take away from the comments here is just have fun and do what you want. May have 1 or 2 set days, but go online sporadically anyway.

Thanks guys!

A_Unicycle - you are playing a very niche genre which will have a fanbase.
This fanbase will not be able to get enough of the games that you play.
Stream whilst you are practicing. You don't need to commentate if you don't want to.

Then use a schedule to announce your main run shows.
Make these days super special and interactive with your fans.

You've missed a trick by not advertising yourself here.
How is everyone going to know who you are if you don't promote yourself ?

I have a rigid schedule that I adhere to.
But I have no commitments outside of work.

Thanks Pink, that's encouraging! I'll stick with it and see what happens. At the end of the day, I don't really mind having a small viewership, as I just like playing these games. Sounds like a good plan to have set days where I try special things though. I figure I'll have one in the morning, and one at night due to my timezone.

I'll be streaming in about an hour if anyone wants to watch!

Hi, all!

I'm doing a charity stream next weekend, February 3rd & 4th, to benefit a local animal rescue, the Animal Coalition of Delaware County. I will be streaming 2 PM to 2 AM EST on Saturday, and from 12:00 PM to 12:00 EST AM on Sunday. If you've been wanting to catch my stream and it's never worked out time-wise, now's your chance.

Please spread the word. The campaign page is here: https://tiltify.com/@toanstation/tha...

Also, does anyone know if we have a charity thread on the site?

Friends, we’re gonna stream some EVE Online in an hour for a few hours today! Please join us in chat or in game, if you’d like!

We just bumped over the affiliate level. Thanks to everybody around here who chills out when we do stuff. I'm thinking the Contemplative Walrus as our emoji.

@Wink - I dropped briefly into your stream yesterday, but the audio was really hard to pick up. Lots of room noise and the conversation was muffled. Might be something to look into?

Grats Ed !
I just hit 2,000 views on my youtube channel.
Not bad for a few months.

Thanks ER... it is an awful mic. I've been dying to replace it, since my kids broke my old headset.

I should really watch my own stuff, see what it's like.

If you're going to have multiple people in the same room (which it sounded like?) I would look into multiple mics. If the other person was on a Skype call, you might be doomed, though. We use per-speaker mics (the lavs we use were like $39 apiece, I had them from doing other stuff, and the primary microphone at my desk is a $60 dynamic) and it feels a heck of a lot better to talk into them.

I should probably do a walkthrough of our shooting set - I use it for work purposes as well as dumb video games, and it's a pretty nice setup that I built on the cheap.

Also, we're doing our weekly show again tonight over here. Gonna see if we can't finish up Doki Doki Literature Club, but I'm expecting it might be one more week.

Congrats on making affiliate, Ed! It feels really good when you hit that milestone.

I'm streaming today from noon to midnight, Eastern Time, to raise money for the Animal Coalition of Delaware County. On the slate are DDO, LotRO, Warframe and probably some Plants vs. Zombies.

Hello fellow GWJ'ers, I'm a tad late to the streaming party but I'm starting to do some streaming whenever I can. If you guys don't mind giving me a follow to help grow my channel, I would greatly appreciate it!

I'll be sure to give you a follow back!

Hi Everyone! My name is KFev, I just recently started streaming and I am looking to do it for fun in my free time. My main goal right now is to reach affiliate, and I am going to be streaming the Dark Souls series as my first set of games! If you're interested in watching the stream and throwing me a follow to show your support, you can check out the stream at the link below!

https://www.twitch.tv/kfev

Thank you and I hope you guys enjoy the stream!

We're back on Doki Doki Literature Club tonight and my body is not ready.

Had the chance to stream Shadow of the Colossus: Remake the other day. The game still holds up great! Also had some goofy things happen and some friendly banter with the chat hah.

Also at around the 21:00 mark I ummm grab a colossus crotch.....apparently not a weak point.

Off last week due to schedules and Life Crap, but we're back on this week at 8PM Eastern with some Puyo Puyo Tetris, some Into the Breach, and some hard men to climb.

Almost like we've got a schedule going, but tonight we're playing Long Live The Queen (at Casey's request) and maybe some of Aviary Attorney.

Next week should be fun if things go as planned, with a complete tonal shift--get a bunch of Boston fighting games folks in and have them kick my ass up and down the street.

I’ve been wondering if we have a list of Goodjers who have reached Affiliate or Partner status? When you get Twitch Prime (with Amazon Prine, great deal deal in my book), you get a free subscription thrown in which can gift to an Affliate or Partner. I try to alternate who I send mine too, but I’m not sure I have a list (Teeny and Toanstation are the only ones I’m sure of).
Anyone else?

(I’d like to also thank here those of you who have sent yours my way in the past, I truly appreciate it)
