Buying Zero Games in 2018 (Or One or Two, I'm Not the Boss of You)

Guys. GUYS. Today I was walking to Subway and passed by a Goodwill. "I'll just go in and see what they have," I lied to myself.

Went in, immediately found three games I actually wanted: Ace Combat 5 and LOTR: Return of the King for PS2, SSX for PS3.

I stood there with them in my hand for a while, then looked at the disks, which were in good condition.

Then, suddenly, said to myself, "I don't need these." Put them back on the shelf and walked out.

IT FELT SO GREAT.

I just bought Bayonetta 2 for the switch. Do I need to reset my day counter if it was one of the games that were already cleared for purchase in 2017? I have however managed not to splurge on items not on my 2017 list. So net win?

Y'all are WEAK!

Isn't that how one avoids buying games?

Reset to 1 day :(.

What did you in?

Super Mario Maker on 3DS at 30% off on the eshop. I really want to make levels for my daughter to play. She likes collecting coins but hates falling into pits etc.

14 and still standing strong!

Nurturing children qualifies for exemption in my book.

Thanks!

(Now's not the time to mention I went back and got Bravely Second I guess...? Maybe she can play that in 10 years!)

Alright, bought my first game in 1.5 weeks, a near-mint copy of 2006's Star Trek Legacy for $12, which at that price I could not pass up.

Well, okay, I could, but I wanna play it for my channel, and it goes typically for 3-4x that much.

Still, near two weeks is a very long stretch without me buying a game, so I still would like to think that's progress.

No games so far this year.

I am going to have to buy the expansion for World of Warcraft. Does that count?

Oooh, that game is not that good. Shame that's the last appearance of Patrick Stewart as Picard.

Are you spending money on games when you have plenty of other games you already own and mean to play?

I know, that's why I got it.

Expansions are a tricky subject, because obviously he already owns WoW but to get the best out of it you need to be playing with everyone else, which means buying the expansion. I mean, there are no rules here, each to their own, but I'd feel comfortable buying an expansion for such a long form game and still being a member of the no games bought club, such as it is.

Reset to zero. Got Viewtiful Joe 2 for $12. Couldn't resist at that price.

Well, I was gifted a $50 PSN card and the Holiday sale's 5th week was in effect... and bit the bullet on Furi, Salt and Sanctuary, The Sexy Brutale, and Day of the Tentacle Remastered.

Restarting the count!

At least this wasn't something that came out of my own pocket.

9 days baby!

Still going strong; morale is high.

I bought Shadow of the Colossus 2 days in like I said I might. So I don’t have to dig out my PS3. Otherwise, though, holding strong.

OMG I just realized 9 days for me as well. Go us!

The problem for me at the moment is I'm back into Heroes of the Storm after a long hiatus. Now, I'm trying to treat it as free to play, but there are quite a few heroes I don't own and the temptation is there to push the buy button rather than grinding out the gold required. So far I've stayed strong, but my finger has hovered over the buy button a couple of times.

One month out of 12 down! 11 to go!

Everyone is doing really well .

The best thing is that, resisting buying games over time, you establish the good habit of considering your purchases carefully. In the end you need a very good reason to buy a game rather than a purchase just being a knee jerk reaction to marketing.

I find it interesting to look back on the games I've played and consider how many of them I could just never have played. They passed some time but that was all.

Almost 20 days!
