2017 Community Game of the Year - Results on the front page!!

But yeah, voting like this is going is going to skew heavily towards earlier releases, simply because more people will have had a chance to play them. There's three titles in the top ten that were released in the back half of the year: War of the Chosen, Divinity 2, and Mario, coming out in August, September, and October, respectively. Mario's the only really late one, and that's a new mario game for a new Nintendo console.

That's what I thought so I did a kinda of history of the GWJ GOTYs, colorcoding by quarter of release (yeah, I know, color coding isn't very scientific, but cut me some slack, I've already invested way more time into this than is reasonable):

Do we really have to go on and on with the criticisms? I'm not sure this thread is the place for it. It'd be a shame to have to lock it.

It's wasn't intended as a criticism, more an observation of the realities of the voters? People have lives, being out longer gives people more time to pick up a game, and finish it if it's a ginormous rpg. All things being equal, there should be a bias against Q4 releases. Of course, they're usually not equal, since there's the infamous fall release glut and all that.

Sure, if you're looking to the list for being The Objective Truth of great games, it would be one, but that would supremely silly thing to do with any endd of year award.

And the work you've put into this is definitely much appreciated!

(Being let down by both gameplay and story definitely was a cheap dig at Andromeda though, and I should probably take that to the Andromeda thread.)

EDIT: Although there's also the flip side of if you play something too early you'll forget about it and goddammit Banner Saga 2 definitely should have been in my top 10.

Late to the thread. Great job, Eleima! I only played a few of the games on the list myself, but based on what my boys play, it looks pretty solid. The eldest is a PC gamer, was huge into OW last year, but this year is all-in on PUBG. He was so proud when he finally placed first in a match.

After the incredible landslide victory of Breath of the Wild, I wish more than ever that I could afford a Switch. Sadly, unlike 2016 where I somehow managed to scrape enough together to get a PS4, I don't see it happening this year.

You're not alone BadKen. Breath of the Wild is right at the top of my 'wish I could play list', but the PS4 had more games that I wanted so I used my gift money to pick a PS4 up. I primarily game on my PC, so even a PS4 is an extravagance for me - but damn The Last of Us 2 will come out and the first was one of my top games ever.

My youngest (13) is a Nintendo fan since he could eat solid food. This year he took his allowance, birthday, and Christmas money (he hoards more than a fire drake from the North on a stolen pile of gold) and bought a Switch. I thought that was ill-advised at the time, but I have since come around. He plays BotW on the basement TV while docked. And he brought it on vacation with us, continuing the game seamlessly. The myriad ways you can connect and use the controllers is impressive. No other system is that versatile. And I haven't seen him this into a game since the first Pokemon games he played on DS. Lesson learned: never underestimate Nintendo.

ACK. I totally forgot about Banner Saga 2. That game definitely should have been on my list. And Hyperlight Drifter!

Whoops. Ah well.

Great work on the counting and tabulating and etc Eleima! This is one of my favorite threads every year.

Who is going to put together the Community Game of the Decade thread two years from now?

Also awesome to see that every real Mass Effect game has made it on the list even if ME:A only barely did

Eleima, of course I appreciate you doing the voting, but I super duper extra special appreciate this color coded list. I also suspected earlier releases would do better (because Q4 releases would be more likely to split over to the new year), but based on what I see here, I might have just been projecting. As you say, it's not scientific, but it does give some indication.

Oh that wasn’t directed at you. I was typing not to do do seperated posts, I should’ve made that more clear.

Yeah, me too! Just goes to show that empirical evidence is not evidence at all.

Filthy factist.

Persona 5 is mislabeled though, it was a late 2016 release in Japan, and an April 2017 release elsewhere. And while PLUNKBAT got an official release Q4, I'd argue the early access release in March is more relevant.

Let's not open this particular can of worms shall we?

PLUNKBAT

Finally an acronym (bacronym?) I can get behind.

Thanks for all your hard work Eleima. A fun, if inevitably controversial thread. And a great wrap up to read! Thanks!

Hey folks! Deadline for submission will be Sunday evening (for vague values of "evening" based upon your local time zone). So if there's anything you'd like to see get recognized in some fashion, now's the chance!

Hey folks! Wordsmythe and I have an idea for the front page!

While we'll be reaching out to Eleima in regards to how to get the Community GotY on the front page once all votes are tallied (I'll be doing it right after this post, in fact!), I wanted to see about reaching out to everyone regarding games from 2017 that aren't getting much top ten love. Checking the tallies between the writers and the podcast crew (and now the Community (GotY)) there's been a wide variety of games discussed and represented, but I wanted to reach out and have you guys discuss games that are getting a bit overlooked.

Resident Evil VII, Yooka Laylee, A Hat in Time, Yakuza 0/Kiwami, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, ARMS, none of these games are really being discussed.

So, I'm reaching out to the community. You can pick one game from 2017 that's not on that front-page tally of GotY picks, write one paragraph about it, and send it to me (PM or chris at gamerswithjobs dot com) or Wordsmythe (PM or erik at gamerswithjobs dot com), or Greg if he's willing to have stuff flood his inbox, and we'll try and sort it all into a presentable post. Depending on number of submissions we may have to limit which games are noted, but we think everyone should have a chance to get noticed.

Thanks!

PM incoming.

I'm looking forward to your incredibly trick write-up.

I wish.

Candice is a 2016 release so I had to pass over it in favor of 2017's West of Loathing.

Though maybe I misread the original call-out as being only eligible for 2017 releases.

I'm still hoping for you to send me a piece on ARMS!

Yeah, trying to keep it to 2017 releases, otherwise I'd have to go back and search what was in the winning top ten all the prior years we did this.

Fiiine.

I'm a front page writer!

To whom do I PM my address to ensure prompt delivery of royalty checks and groupies?
