2017 Community Game of the Year - Results on the front page!!

(2) I'd love to see a statistical analysis on this, but I think that WHEN the game is released probably makes a big difference, and that we are weighed towards games that release in the middle of the year, followed by early in the year. A game that releases really late probably has its votes split between the release year and the following year.

A couple of us are working* on this actually and this is one metric I want to use.

*Caveat that we are busy academics and make no promises on when results will be ready to post.

Need to get back to this...

It sounds like you don't actually disagree with the substance of what I said?... just whether it is a "problem."

Personally I don't disagree. I think we all look for something differently in a top 10 list, and this thread has always meant to be fun and provides insight to why people pick these games.

But work was really slow so I thought I'd pretend I'm someone else and... attempt to come up with different argument

This all might sound more complain-y than I intend, and if so, sorry!

What are you, Canadian? stop saying sorry!

Get on it Gravity!

FWIW I think this year the fact that the Switch was so hard to hunt down after launch meant that a lot of people didn't get one until Christmas. I'm sure I'm not the only person here who would have ranked Switch exclusives higher if I had only had longer to play them.

Come hang out with us in the JRPG thread. After a few years you'll forget what it's like to vote for anything that makes it into the top 10

I think Breath of the Wild has a pretty good chance of making the top ten.

It won't be the #1 though. The community has yet to select a game that was developed in Japan as the Community GOTY. Interestingly, the only ones that have cracked the Top 10 have come from Nintendo, Capcom, From Software, and Konami.

I totally forgot to come back and vote this year. I just got really busy, and then went on vacation for a while. For what it's worth, here are a few games that stood out for me.

Wolfenstein II
This game is just so nuts and shouldn't work as well as it does. There are so many memorable moments, especially Texas through the next couple of scenes. I'll remember this one for quite a while.

Mario Odyssey
This was my favorite Nintendo game of 2017. I liked Zelda, but the constant weapon breaking, cooking, and a few other things made me not enjoy Zelda as much as I would have hoped, and I stopped playing for now. Mario Oddyssey however, was just a joy to play the whole way through. I loved discovering all the interesting ways to collect moons, and enjoyed the capture mechanics. And there's still so much to do after the amusing final capture and ending movie.

Perception
As someone with a vision impairment, I always find games that try to portray blindness interesting. Perception definitely isn't accurate in some aspects, but it was fun to play, and I liked the main character. The smart phone technology she uses however is very real, and I use some aspects of this regularly.

I also enjoyed playing a lot of smaller indie and VR titles this year. I didn't play too many triple A games other than the ones I just mentioned.

:)

I know right? Etrian Odyssey deserves a top spot.

BGFH, I'm sorry to say that your list is a little too late, and even more so because it would've had an impact on number #10.
However, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has Perception on her list. I completely agree with your assessment on it not being entirely accurate, and I definitely value your opinion since I myself do not have any visual impairment. I think it's a mix of working at an eye hospital and kinda listening to others (remember to turn on image description when you post pictures on Twitter folks!), but I definitely have become more aware and I was really happy to experience this game. You didn't mention the sound design though and I'm curious: what did you think of it?

Edit: combing through this thread to prep my write up : wow you folks are chatty.

47 minutes into Prey, and I'm glad I waited until this year to start it, because it'd definitely be in my top 3. Total mindf*ck already, and I've never had a game openly gaslight me.

I’m too much of a wuss to play Prey.

Did you ever play System Shock 2? Prey seems very similar to System Shock 2. I’m a giant baby when it comes to anything scary too but was able to get through SS2. I just don’t have the time for Prey.

Okay it’s 2am. Finished my write up. Going to bed.

Edit: I played a bit of SS2 but not that much. It really didn’t appeal to me, and I tried to play it a long time after it came out IIRC.

The suspense is killing me.

Did the post title just changed ?!?! I swear it still said "Polls are now closed" just a couple hours ago.

Y'all can't do this. This thread needs to remain silent until the results are posted. The disappointment is too much to bear.

You people are monsters.

...But now I've done it too.

What if I was the real monster all along?

There has been clear signs of gerrymandering, dead people voting, and weird people that can't be real voting like shoptroll, everythingstentative, and tuffalobuffalo. Those are clearly fake names created by fake people from a fake planet in a fake galaxy that doesn't even have video games. I demand a recount and water. Also a pizza. Maybe a hamburger. Oh fries would be nice. Strawberry shake. AND JUSTICE. SWEET SWEET JUSTICE.

Oh of course, we have a nobleman from a different plane of existence complaining about the outcome of an election that he should have no stake in. This political climate is inescapable.

Careful dude - might be best to keep Baron of Hell on your good side. Pascal's wager, amirite?

Hush, hush little ones. "Soon" means "soon". But not "now".
