Grim Dawn Catch-All

I picked this up during the Steam sale for seven bucks and have been very impressed so far. You can tell it’s by ex-Titan Quest devs, the game oozes it from every corner which is certainly a good thing. The gothic setting is very cool and I’m looking forward to really sinking some time into it at some point this year.

Got the expansion (thank you Merphle) and crucible mode for christmas. Having a blast playing again. For me it's the perfect balance between D3 skills (too simple, limited) and Path of Exile (too complex).

Crucible is a good way to get a new character up to around level 10-12 in a very short time.

Yeah, I have played 2 chars to 100 in December. It is quite good. I really don't like crucible though. You spend a ton of time on 50+ easy waves, and later on gets into random one-shot territory. The game could use some better end game within the campaign.

Just picked it up in the Steam sale too. Having a great time, although it's giving me terrible alt-itis. Keep thinking of other build ideas I want to try.

I'm out of action for a while due to moving house but give me an shout if you want to co-op.

I think one of the virtues of Grim Dawn is its support for altitis. There are multiple assists available to you to skip the grindier aspects of the game once you've done a complete run with one character (e.g., faction boosts for both good and bad rep, XP boost potions, shared crafting recipes, generous stash sizes). I'm 414 hours down the rabbit hole now and really enjoying experimenting with builds based around specific skills and items. Got a vitality-based apostate to Ultimate who fries things with vampiric lightning after DoTting them up with active and proc-based debuffs. Totally unorthodox but I've knocked over almost everything campaign and crucible-wise with them now, so I'm farming items and recipes for other alts while waiting for a mythic drop that will totally change my main support skill and open up an entirely new strategy for me.

Will keep that in mind, thanks!

Good to know - that should encourage me to at least stick with the one character until I've unlocked those.

Alt-itis is a real threat in this, I've got half a dozen characters going in my roughly 300 hours of playtime, and it's a struggle to keep it that low.

It's a very flexible system too. My favourite off the wall build is my Warlock (Occultist/Arcanist), who should ostensibly be a caster using the squishiest two base classes, but I've built them as an incredibly tough, heavy armour and shield wielding tank who kills enemies through reflected damage. It works well! And the ragdolls for reflect kills are hilarious.

I think I read here or on the Steam forums that the game pad support has really improved in recent updates. Does the game still have you using the thumb sticks to mouse the cursor around in the menus and inventory? Or is it a dynamic UI where it will change depending on the input being used at the time?

I haven't tried it myself, but it's looking a lot closer to console levels of controller optimisation from the screenshots floating around out there.

So guys, I recently found out this game has gamepad support, and my god it's amazing with a gamepad. It's like a whole new game. I'm now on a whole new level of addicted to it, so much so I just bought the expansion. So far still with my pyromancer, but I'm gonna try one of the new classes soon. Such an amazing game.

ARPGs with controller > K&M

Right? Why Diablo 3 doesn't have gamepad controls on the PC seems insane to me.

The GD gamepad scheme is very bizarre for me. Not intuitive at all. I wonder this is because I’m using a DS4 instead of standard Xbox controller.

Also noticed the frame rate dipping when in gamepad mode. It’s a pass for now. I wish their UI was dynamic based on control input like it is with Elder Scrolls Online.

It...is? If you hit a key it switches to keyboard mode, but if you use a pad it switched back to pad mode, like, instantaneously.

I jumped back in recently and ran into a very frustrating bug. My stash and main character couldn't advance. Every time I closed the stash and re-opened it, everything would be as it originally was. My main character lost a lot of progress too. Turns out that the stash and three character's save files had, somehow, been marked as "read only". Fixed that and finally going to be able to jump into some new content tonight.

Grim Dawn is two years old, and the devs are teasing a big announcement on March 5th. Finally, a sequel?

Do a Path of exile and get rid of the multiple difficulties and I'll be back!

Most likely just the console version release date. With details on the patch that will also come to PC because if you don't also pat PC players on the head and tell them they are special when talking about a console version of something they send you death threats

And rightfully so!

Pretty much no information, but yep, another expansion

And a day one purchase.

Wow, already! I'm all for this. Much better than console-release news, which would've also been welcomed.

I see this is on sale for Halloween. Is the expansion a no brainer or better to just start with the main game?

I'd say the expansion is fantastic as it adds a very good post-game area and two whole new masteries (classes). I really like the new masteries as well; Necromancer is what it says it is and the Inquisitor is magic-based gun wielder.

Trailer for the new expansion:

New mastery and infinite dungeon. I am so in.
The expansion looks like a huge boost in graphics quality too.

edit: first expansion is a no brainer for sure

I've been ready for this for over a year.... But why can't they put a date on it?!

I'm be firing it back up.

It says March... Hopefully that is sooner rather than later

Yah, your best bet for earlier rather than latter is Friday, March 29th at 10:00am instead of 2pm.
