As a New England Patriots fan, that video brought a tear to my eye. What could have been.

Watching videos today, a popular question among the pundits has been, "did New England make the wrong decision?".

And I think the answer is "no", because they made the only decision they could. They waited as long as possible, and frankly were giving Tom Brady every opportunity to stumble (or be injured, like Joe Montana) and give them cause to make a move. He didn't, so there's just no way they could have made the move. Because even if they did, it would have created an environment of impossible expectations for Jimmy. Being one of the best QBs in the league would barely count as an achievement, it would simply be holding par with what they already had. Anything less would be disaster. The cost of that move was too high.

For San Francisco, making that move was cheap. They had nothing to lose besides a 2nd round pick and an already lost season. If it went bad, they could swallow the draft pick loss and spend their 1st round pick (which would have probably been the #2 pick) on whatever QB they wanted besides whomever Cleveland takes.

I won't be shocked if New England takes a reasonably early pick (round 2-3) and spends it on a quarterback. Maybe someone like Luke Falk.

The biggest losers in that deal are the rest of the league without a star QB that didn't make every effort to trade for him themselves.

Kick Tac Toe is now a thing at the Pro Bowl skills competition. Just show the damn dodgeball game live and call it a day.

Also, being coached by Brady and Belichick is clearly what makes Ryan Mallet so good. I'm glad he's backing up Joe "Check Down" Flacco in Baltimore as there will be continuity of leadership once Flacco gets the axe.

To be fair getting groomed by Brady and getting groomed by Flacco mean slightly different things.

I guess you forgot who drafted Mallett.

A "GM" lost his job in part because of this.

I guess my photoshop skills are that good because you missed my "grooming" pun.

I did miss that. That's hilarious!

Living near Boston it's also impossible to forget the Pats drafted Mallet. On Boston sports radio whenever a caller says Belichick is a great drafter of QBs, Mallet is the example A counterpoint. (There were plenty other busts but he was picked relatively high).

So is Jimmy G going to the hall of fame as a Pat or a 49er?

Knowing everyone but a Pats fans luck he will end up back there at some point. Mostly because Legion isn't allowed to have nice things for our amusement.

I think we all know that Jimmy G will now end up in KC at some point.

Chiefs about to join small group of NFL teams to accomplish this offensive feat

Nine yards.

That’s all Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce needs to reach 1,000 for the season, and he’s got two games to get there. Should Kelce get those 9 yards, he’ll join teammates Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill as players who have gained 1,000 yards from scrimmage.

Hunt has rushed for 1,201 yards, while Hill has 1,074 yards receiving and Kelce has 991 receiving yards.

Only four teams in NFL history have had a tight end, running back and wide receiver reach the 1,000-yard mark in the same season. Here is the list:

2007 Browns: Jamal Lewis (1,304), Kellen Winslow Jr. (1,106), Braylon Edwards (1,289)

1997 Broncos: Terrell Davis (1,750), Shannon Sharpe (1,107), Rod Smith (1,180)

1981 Chargers: Chuck Muncie (1,144), Kellen Winslow Sr. (1,075), Charlie Joiner (1,188)

1981 Vikings: Ted Brown (1,063), Joe Senser (1,004), Sammy White (1,001)

The 1997 Broncos won XXXII, while the 1981 Chargers finished with a 10-6 record and beat the Dolphins in perhaps the greatest playoff game ever (41-38 in overtime) before losing to the Bengals in the AFC Championship Game. The 2007 Browns had a 10-6 record but missed the playoffs. The 1981 Vikings ended up with a 7-9 record.

You can lead a horse to water...

Hey Ryan Mallet learned well enough that he still has an NFL job despite being Ryan Mallet when he gets on the field. Or perhaps Baltimore keeps him around because they *think* he learned something from Belichick.

Obviously both. One bronze bust as a Patriot that captures his mid-20s youthful beauty, and one as a 49er that immortalizes the rugged handsomeness he grows into in his mid-40s.

Today's Blake Bortles fact: Blake Bortles needs 16,966 rushing yards on Sunday against the @49ers to become the @NFL's all-time leading rusher (@EmmittSmith22: 18,355).

RUN BLAKE RUN

Spoiler:

The guy who does that Twitter feed was just profiled in the Wall Street Journal.

Is Mallet actually 'bad' or is he just parked behind Joe Flacco who is 'bad' but in the 0 risk NFL how do you bench Flacco when the Ravens are 8-6.

Flacco is like vanilla pudding. Meh but is he actually killing the Ravens? He has 12 picks which is less than Big Ben/Mariota. Same as Cam and 1 more than Wilson.

Rodgers has 2 more tds than Flacco this year. *starts sobbing*

Jadeveon Clowney fills garbage cans Jags fans sent him with toys, gives them to needy kids.

Mallett is blah. Pretty much the perfect backup QB for Flacco as he has an arm and that's about it.

The thing with Flacco is he went from an average starting QB who could throw a man deep ball to King Checkdown. I don't know if that's injuries or his OL, etc., but it's painful to see. He's led the league in failed completions this year and last, which is the sort of thing you'd expect from Alex Smith and not a guy known for his long ball

James Harrison cut

Only played 40 snaps this season after signing a two year deal. I guess they didn’t need him.

Ugly win, but I’ll take it.

Jack Del Rio's job with the Raiders is essentially a coin flip. And Supreme Leader Mark Davis' road to the dark side is almost complete.

The QB market might get very interesting.

Sources: Teams complain that Packers violated IR rule, think Aaron Rodgers should be released

Multiple teams complained to the NFL last week that the Packers violated the rules regarding players who are eligible to be placed on injured reserve -- and that Green Bay should have to release quarterback Aaron Rodgers as a result, league sources told ESPN.

NFL rules stipulate that a player needs to have suffered a new injury that would sideline him at least six weeks to be placed on injured reserve. If that is not the case, the team is obligated to release the player once he is healthy.

I was reading about that earlier and if that happens he's gonna end up back in Green Bay anyway, so it's a nonstory to me.

The real story this week is Cleveland is one step closer to 0-16!

The NFL is just trolling everyone outside of the New England area with these touchdowns that magically aren’t touchdowns against the Patriots.

Garoppolo is doing damage against the Jags D, and they're on the sideline melting down.

UGH I'M SO CONFUSED

Chiefs!

What a perfectly Tampa way to lose a game.
1. Miss long FG, so lead remains four.
2. Give up long pass play to nobody WR.
3. On a 4th and 3 from the 5, jump offside, giving Carolina a 4th and 1/2 instead.
4. Allow Carolina to convert the first down by the proverbial width of a piece of paper.
5. On the next down, have Cam Newton fumble the snap, pick the ball up perfectly in-stride, and score a TD with about 35 seconds left.
6. Allow Winston to be strip-sacked on the next play, ending the game.

Bortlesed!

Bortles pick six followed by blocked XP for a Jags 2-point score.

More melting down on the Jags sideline.

UGH just don't let anyone get hurt.

This game was ... odd to say the least.

In related news, cardiac deaths in the Charlotte area hit a record high today.
