Gaming Goals for 2018

Peoj, I'm a primary caring dad of a 1 and 4 year old so I find any potential voids are quickly filled with the many things that always need doing (usually laundry). Thus far I've never really had to tussle with depression, thankfully.
That said, I will have a list of things I want to keep on top of including gardening and home improvements, excercise, meditation, financial planning and general self improvement. I just didn't list them here thinking it might be drifting off topic.

I hear you! Got 4 toddlers over here aged 15, 13, 11 and 8. And now the fun starts: playing Skyrim and GTA V with the oldest, Designing coasters with the 13 yo, while playing the Wii with all kind of Mario games with the 11 and 8 year olds.

And to be on topic.

1. Finish a game of Civ V, instead of starting over realizing my start could be better.
2. Finish a game of Homm 3, instead of starting over realizing my start could be better.
3. Finish a game of Good ol' Colonization (yes, the very old one) on Prince level, instead of starting over realizing my start could be better.
4. Finish Rebel Galaxy
5. Play through Skyrim and GTA V on the Xbox
6. Stop Drunken management of FM 2017 in the weekend... I could have promoted three times if I played sober.
7. Stop trying to get the better part of me/my lovely wife into gaming.

About point 7 I wonder... Are there any other ladies that spent evening after evening putting things into baskets in Amazon, dealextreme et all, and when the tab hits around 1200 dollars or more, delete these lists completely to start all over again within two days? If so... could this be regarded as some form of gaming... a reserve Sims-kind of thing: trying to burn down the cash your family and household is built upon?

My wife does this, or at least something very close it. She just loves 'shopping' online, even if she doesn't always push the Buy Now button. She does it while I'm gaming.

Gaming goals. Not necessarily in order of priority.

1. Play big ticket games like Mech Commander and Phoenix Point. Also delve more into indie titles.

2. Teach myself and the boy to do basic programming and build a game together.

3. Finish Witcher 3 and FO4.

4. Build a gaming rig for my wife and play PUBG and/or Overwatch together.

My gaming goals for the past year consisted of a list of 12 games. I wanted to do a game a month. I think I finished 1 or 2, then played entirely new titles. Oops.

This year, I'd like to play less competitive games. Be less invested in online ranks. I played a lot of Overwatch throughout 2017, and I was honestly so frustrated throughout a lot of it. It was a negative emotion, and I want to surround myself with more positivity.

To find a single-player RPG so in depth and addicting that I end up thinking about it when I'm not playing it.

I wish I could do this for the first time again. Hell, I might do it for the second time.

I think my goal will be to play all of the Mass Effect games. Oh, and finish the Fallout games (I have DLC left in New Vegas and am near the end of FO 4).

How old is your son? Curious about doing something similar with my kids when they are old enough, would love to read how you go about it.

1. With the exception of the Civ expansion, I don't plan to buy any new games next year because...

2. I need to get through some of my backlog. I don't intend to force myself to finish games I'm not enjoying, but I'd like to give each game I try at least 2 hours. Looking at my list for this year, I count ~25 games that I played for the first time, and that includes spending 4 months playing nothing but The Witcher 2 and 3. Channeling that time into playing other games in my library should allow me to get through a large chunk of my backlog.

3. Finally, as part of getting though my backlog, I'd like to give immersive sims a chance. I've never played one other than a few minutes of the original Deus Ex, so I'd like to correct that oversight and I have a few of them in my Steam library.

Boy is 8.5yo at the end of this year.

We started earlier this year with a free iOS learn to program app, can't recall its name right now (it might have been Swift Playgrounds), but it teaches basic routines in a really intuitive scenario by scenario process. He didn't absorb a lot at the time, but he's progressed by leaps and bounds this year in terms of analytics and logic. I didn't push him further along the path because it's something the child needs to grow in curiosity or else they will become resentful.

For Christmas, Santa is getting him Bloxels, one of the trendy augmented reality toys/games that picks up real life input and makes it interactive with software.

He really wanted Bloxels after watching a lot of streaming of it on Youtube, so the hope is that he can let his imagination go wild and delve more deeply into the programming aspect of it. I don't know whether it will really fuel his creative drive and passion for coding, but hey, parenting is a case of throwing mud at the wall and seeing what sticks!

1. Get at least a decent prototype build finished for my new game. Ever since releasing my previous (first) game, I've had a hard time getting back into the groove.

2. Clear out my backlog of PS3 games. i.e. finally play ZOE 2 and any other PS3 games that I have sitting on a shelf, but never got around to.

It's probably quite pointless for me to declare 'tackle the pile' as a goal for 2018, since I do it every year and rarely make any meaningful headway. I declare games in the monthly pile threads fairly often but quite often fail in that endeavour. I will certainly do my best to at least not add to the pile. If I buy new stuff I want to play it straight away.

One of the biggest problems for me when it comes to pile management is that I'm naturally drawn to games that don't have an obvious end. My steam wishlist has the likes of Rimworld and Oxygen not Included on it... this year I played a bunch of Euro Truck Simulator, Heroes of the Storm, Stellaris, Crusader Kings... I'm never going to finish these games and yet they add to my perception of the pile growing.

Decide there is no pile.

*BOOM*

Done

Now, there's just some games you might play at some point but maybe not, who knows? Now you don't have to buy them if you decide to at some point whenever.

Then embrace not buying anything unless you are going to play it as soon as it downloads (but hey if you make a mistake during a Steam Sale no big deal). This is the Path to Greater Happiness.

Oh yeah, they are super-awesome. You can visit them and hang out. Talk about how much better you feel now that there is no pile, help them to see the light.

Thanks a bunch, but I actually like managing my Pile. A lot.

If it makes you happy, revel in the pile management.

I too enjoy the managing of the pile, however...

... I don't think these never-ending games that you enjoy should really count towards the pile at all. Being open ended means if included they would be on there indefinitely, so best to not include them I say.

The fact that Rimworld and Oxygen Not Included are also on my Mac wishlist has nothing to do with this thought whatsoever

Yeah, those are why Steam has a "Favorites" category, so I can place evergreen games like Civilization there and don't have to put it in my "Unplayed" category

You mean re-think/sorting your Steam categories periodically to somehow justify your pile to yourself...that is not a prime e-sport for you?

Damn...I'm doing it wrong again.

This is kind of a long-shot goal for me, but if I get the backlog down a bit more, I'd like to try more strategy games. I really enjoy Civ, and I've liked Dawn of War 2 in the past. But I've struggled to get into others, whether it's an RTS like Starcraft, a Paradox grand strategy game like Crusader Kings II, or something like XCOM. The learning curve seems so daunting for these games and I have an irrational habit of stubbornly refusing to google how to play. I get annoyed when I feel like a game doesn't give me the information I need to play (whether that's accurate or not). So I hit a wall, and tend to give up early on. Lighter strategy games like Kingdoms & Castles, or Northgard, look appealing to me, so maybe I'll start there.

Okay, I've got a gaming goal for 2018. Depending on how this tweet poll goes and on what I ultimately decide for myself, I'm going to replay a good chunk of the Mass Effect trilogy.

Gosh, I hope your arm doesn't hurt from getting twisted so fiercely.

I would like to complete more games than last year (only about 3 or 4).

It kinda tickles actually.

I want to finish building my VR captain's chair with HOTAS and peddles and get back into Elite Dangerous.

Its been so long since I've played, its going to be basically a new game for me...

This one is at the top of my list too.

I have two escapes, gaming and crocheting.

This year, I need to find a balance between these two sanctuaries due to even less time for both.

I'm hopeful that my wife's career takes the upturn it is headed towards as it means we can realistically look at me moving out of the menial night shift work I am currently stuck in (and have been for the last 5 years) which would free up my evenings once more.

I too am the "stay-at-home" default parent, so it is very hard to find any "off" time, and even harder to then reconcile the guilt associated with choosing something other than "keeping up with the housework" in that time.

So I guess my 2018 Goal is a simple sounding "find some balance" that may turn out to be a lot harder to accomplish.

2017 saw me devoting more of my gaming time to “evergreen” games than in the past. I spent big chunks of the year playing more Civ V, more Civ 6, more Europa Universalis IV, more Diablo 3, and more Cities Skylines. My wife and I also have a nightly tradition of playing Ascension, Race for the Galaxy, or Ticket to Ride on our iPads as we’re winding down for bed. I’ve really found all of this repetition of games very comforting in a year where my health has declined further, and in which I’ve had weeks of nonxgaming because of dealing with the effects of multiple concussions.

My gaming goal for 2018 is to try to continue this comfort gaming while finding time to squeeze in games like Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and Horizon: Zero Dawn that I’ve kind of let slip by.

I'm playing Witcher 3 now! And since I doubt I'll have it completed by the end of this year, it can be a goal for 2018!

I really need to get back to my insanity mode Mass Effect 2 playthrough, but I just never seem to feel like it due to all the super hard annoying battles in the part I'm in. But maybe I'll make it a goal and push through it since otherwise, I'll never get to Mass Effect 3!

Need to get back to Fallout 4 as well. I have more robot traveling traders to build and put in place for my network, and my settlements still need a lot of work.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with how 2017 went even though I didn't post in the 2017 goal thread (because somehow I completely missed it and only discovered it a week ago.)

Big accomplishments in 2017 was completing both Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion with 100% achievements. These have been years and years in the making. I do still have a few things I want to do in Oblivion with my current character, like finish a couple of armor sets and work on skills, but it's done so far as completion goes. I don't think there is a single thing left I could possibly do in New Vegas...I was very thorough and since the game has an actual ending, there really isn't anything more.

For 2018, I'd like to accomplish at least some of:

Witcher 3
Mass Effect 2 - finish insanity playthrough
Skyrim Xbox 360 playthrough with DLCs.
Finish Monkey Island 2 that I started a few weeks ago.
Learn to fight without constantly getting massacred in Sleeping Dogs
Abzu
Create a zoo in Zoo Tycoon
Dishonored - no kill, no detect playthrough
"Evil" route in Stardew Valley
Peggle challenges
First Dragon Age 2 playthrough

There is more to add to the list, but I suppose that's enough for now. If I can at least get some of these done in 2018, I'll be good!
