Ok, I figured most of that out, but not the part about playing 3 songs in a row. That is AMAZING!

Whoa, note overlap is BIG!

Did it take that long because your demo weapons aren't really meant for fighting him, or is he supposed to be that much of a bullet sponge? If guessing it's the former, I'm pretty sure I fought a Rathalos in Tri and he wasn't that bad, although that was awhile ago.

Also, what was he shooting at the 13 minute mark? Some sort of revolver?

Yes, Rathalos isn't the target of that hunt and he's significantly tougher than the actual target (Anjanath). Your weapons aren't really up to taking him out very quickly. I tried for a few hours with 3 people this afternoon, we only managed to get him limping. Same is true of Diablos in the Wastes.

He's shooting the Slinger, probably trying to flash Rathalos out of the sky.

Jeebus, is Canta even human?

The Hunting Horn stuff took the insanity to yet another level, and this was after trying bow, lance, great sword and charge blade. So cool.

Have managed to get a couple hours in, half of that in the training area, which is great. Generations was my first MH and I remember it being pretty much compulsory to watch some Arekkz or Gaijin Hunter to know what was going on.

I've since forgotten all that so the hints and training space appreciated!

I think stuck to dual blades for what I played of Gen, this time fancy something ranged so tried that here. The first mission solo with the light bowgun, the second completed with the bow. Too tight for time on the third.

I'm in.

PS4 Pro is currently discounted to $350 and Amazon is offering extra trade in credit toward it.

I think it's still hard for me to justify not having seen the full game (or beta) running on both side-by-side. Are you guys mostly on Pro, or standard PS4?

Simply incredible. That run's also a great demonstration of tool use.

I'm on a PS4 Slim.

Wow... that video is crazy, and shows I have no idea what I'm doing.
I soloed the first two areas by beating them to death, didn't take on anything else because of the timer, didn't use any items, just slashing with the katana looking sword.

I've just sussed / remembered what felt different to when I played Gen. Only scratched the surface back then, but as well as using dual blades I was also using aerial style. Having that be my only MH experience and then moving to this it does feel a bit odd being so grounded.

Without really knowing what I'm doing either... I guess it's only the insect glaive that gives aerial manouverability without jumping off ledges?

I'll be trying the third mission again this eve, if I see anyone on, I may holler for a lil help if struggling, completing all three would be nice before the beta runs out tomorrow I guess.

I know that this was announced and talked about earlier, but I had forgotten that we were going to be able to easily switch weapons mid-hunt until I watched that last video, such a huge change.

Scratch that, maybe I still need to watch a few vids for this

I gave it a shot this weekend, I never played a single monster hunter game, I managed to complete the first two hunts solo, first with dual blades, second with that long sword thing (I was terrible at it). For the last hunt I went back to dual blades and decided to try out the multiplayer, we managed to get it done on first try.

I'm still bit on the fence on the game, but leaning closer to getting it specially if there will be a big gwj community around it.

Standard, and I'm not paying hundreds to upgrade when the PC version is coming.

For you new players to the series, if you like the idea of less mobile, more defensive play the lance is a good starting weapon, IMO. I've found that the highly effective tower shield makes it a bit easier to fight the monsters while you are still learning their movesets.

In training I tried out the sword with shield that transforms into an axe, and it seemed manageable.

Charge Blade. Lots of fun technical stuff with it - charging the Shield, Burst and Ultra Burst when to transform to axe and when to stay in Sword + Shield.

Did Guard Points make it into World?

The Monster Hunter I played (Tri) didn't have that weapon, the only shield weapons were the Lance and the SnS, which was still more dodge focused. I'm looking forward to trying the Charge Blade, and seeing if it's a nice middle ground between the two.

It's true that the Insect Glaive rules the skies but a few other weapons can get you up in the air:
* Lance: a jump attack is possible during the rush attack
* Sword n Shield: connecting with the back-hop charge will result in a self-launch. SnS might also retain the ability to mount attack while traversing up terrain (I haven't tried this)

And there are a few other ways to get airborne aside form jumping off ledges:
* I believe all weapons go airborne with a sliding attack
- Switch Axe can double attack: R2 to go up and then triangle on the way down
* we can run up vertical surfaces with red fungus shelves for a wall jump

About what time? I'd be delighted to lend a hand!

If you're enjoying the smidgen the beta provides then you'll probably really dig the full game. I've had a blast teaming up with gwj folks, both this weekend and in the past with 4U and Generations.

I'm wondering this too. In the last Canta video he uses what looks eerily similar to a guard point against Rathalos, so I'm leaning yes.

Is the tackle a new World addition to the Greatsword? It's pretty great.

Charge blade is probably the most complex weapon in the game. In addition to charging the phials in your shield, you need to also charge the shield itself by canceling out an super/ ultra burst. Then you charge up your sword with an elemental burst slash by holding triangle out of a phial charge.

The rotation more or less is: charge slash + shield thrust --> phial charge (puts phials in your shield) --> shield thrust --> super burst --> round slash cancel (puts phials in your shield and turns it red) --> charge slash + shield thrust --> phial charge + charged elemental slash (charges up your sword) --> charged slash + shield thrust --> ultra burst.

Also, you have to actually evade the monster. All this wouldn't be so bad except the charged elemental slash and ultra burst have pretty long animations and you need to keep doing them to keep up a charged sword and red shield respectively. All this being said, I think I'm going hammer...

Indeed; lance is fun. Speaking of lance, Gaijin Hunter posted a video a few hours ago about some new lance abilities:

Forward hopping is cool.

Tackle, you say? *goes and looks* Ooh, that is nice! Yes, that's new.

This does seem like it would be fun with multiple players.. but I would get it on the Xbox for sure so that probably means it would be limited in "fun"

I didn't get much time for this, but did get 15 minutes or so to try the first hunt. The ability to see contact points easier, combat feeling a bit more deliberate, and a full size controller were just great. The game just had a great feel to it.

Negatives:

  • 20 minutes hunt time for the demo. I don't know why they keep doing this. It gives off a bad impression for new players. Hunt times are 50 minutes in the full games.
  • Framerate on the base PS4 can be inconsistent at times. It seemed worst for me when coming out of a camp into an open area right after loading into a zone. Fighting monsters was smooth for the most part.
  • I'm still not sure how I feel about the scout flies. Having them around while acquainting myself with a new map or monster could be nice, but I would like to have the option to turn them off.
  • Some of the text and icons are super small, particularly on the item wheels. Again, this will be less of an issue after getting used to them.
  • The UI seems very busy. This is because everything that used to be split across the 2 3DS screens is now on one. Also, there is just more stuff on the screen now than before, likely in an attempt to make things less obtuse for new players. It all fades into the background when fighting a monster, but it would be nice to be able to customize the UI and turn off individual UI elements. The 3DS games had many options to customize the UI, so hopefully that will be in the full game.
  • Bigger, open maps are an overall welcome change, but it is going to make for some occasionally annoying hunts against monsters that like to run away. I think Escher and I chased a particularly fidgety Anjanath around the map for damn near 10 minutes of our 20 min hunt.

Pros:

Everything else? This feels like Monster Hunter proper on a current gen console. That’s all I really needed to be satisfied. They have made sweeping changes to the game compared to prior entries, but within a minute of running around and swinging my weapon, I could tell that they nailed the feel.

I could probably sit here for hours listing off all of the small improvements that make the game play better or little touches that make the world feel more alive. I’ll just list a few of my favorites.

  • Almost every single item in the crafting menu has a checkbox next to it for auto crafting. This means you can manually select which items you want to automatically create when you collect the proper materials in the field.
  • Gathering most items is so fast that dedicated farming runs are likely to be a thing of the past. If a farming run is still needed on occasion, it should take a fraction of the time it used to.
  • The amount of ways to interact with the environment is overwhelming. So much of it is destructible, and there are so many ways to use the environment against the monsters you are fighting. Also, you are still free to completely ignore all of that stuff if you’d rather just fight them head on.
  • The world feels so dense and detailed. Birds hang out near food. Ants march single file in the desert. Dung beetles roll poop balls around in the mud. Your palico paddles around in a raft when it hits deep water. If you hit a small flying monster with a rock in the desert, they will screech and lure Diablos out from under the ground. If you mount and topple a monster near one of the palico tribes, they will join in on the hunt and tie it down with vines for an extended beatdown.

All in all, I could not be more excited for this. It’s everything I was hoping and more.

Hunt times are 50 minutes in the full games.

oh wow thanks for that info.. that means I can't realistically play this game.. I need games that can be progressed in more manageable time chunks..Saved me $60.

50 minutes is in reference to the time they allow you before the mission fails. In the beta they only give 20 minutes. In general hunts aren't going to take you nearly that long or people wouldn't even be able to do the beta missions.

The more I think about the scout flies the more I like them. They're a clever in-world way to highlight stuff we can interact with. I consider it this way: why does that box glow orange in Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Cuz video games. Why does that pile of poo in MHW glow? Well, some scout flies are on it.

I think it'll extend further than that, too. For those who played 4U, remember those helpful red arrows that pointed the way in the tutorial and let you know when you could jump on things? Spoiler-ish screenshot:

I'm betting they'll be replaced by scout flies in MHW, too.

Ditto. What I've seen in the beta is so much closer to what I imagined Monster Hunter to be before I got familiar with the series, e.g., tracking, environmental hazards, an abundance of small wildlife, etc. This is going to be amazing.

Cheers. Whenever I can

Am terrible for being able to commit to specific times for mp stuff. Same for many am sure.

Hoping for an hour-ish at some point between 10pm and midnight GMT... maybe.
