After months of waiting, Kickstarter backers who opted to receive Yooka Laylee on the Switch can finally be disappointed with those of us who bought on other platforms. Hooray?

In other news about games that harken back to old favorites but are sure to disappoint, Cars with Guns: It’s About Time tries to bring back vehicular combat and couch co-op at the same time. The hook is a time machine that throws the combatants into various epochs. If they don’t let you fight it out in 1976, somebody at Null Reference Games was asleep at the wheel.

Defend Your Buttress looks like it’s right up my alley, bringing the castle-defence genre into the first-person perspective. It’s the mashup nobody was asking for, but that’s pretty much what PC game releases are these days, and I love it. It’s like when you used to have to buy the whole album only to find your favorite song ever was on side B.

My game of the week, however, is Okami HD. I’ve never played Okami, nor do I have any particular interest in playing Okami. I’ve heard it’s good, but I hear a lot of games are good, and listening to that kind of nonsense is how I wound up wasting money on a copy of Red Dead Redemption. So why pick Okami HD as my Game of the Week? Well, I have an interest in seeing as much of Clover Studio’s catalog released on modern platforms as possible. If Okami HD can make bank, then there’s hope for a remaster of Viewtiful Joe and, if we’re very lucky, God Hand.

So go buy Okami HD. Maybe pick up a couple of copies and gift them to friends for Christmas or Boxing Day. Get those NPD numbers up there! Okami HD gets my hopeful vote for Game of the Week.

The trend of DLC releases continues as Resident Evil VII receives its more action-oriented Not a Hero missions on all relevant platforms. This time you get to play as long-time series staple Chris Redfield, whose watermelon muscles are suddenly absent from his rock-punching physique. There also comes the End of Zoe DLC, which I have heard nothing of but feel safe to assume has something to do with a character named Zoe and a conclusion to whatever arc she experienced within the original game.

Battlefield 1 tries to remain relevant with its Turning Tides DLC. I'm sure anyone still playing Battlefield 1 will be pleased by the new distraction leading up to Christmas time. Final Fantasy XV concludes its originally announced trio of expansions with Episode Ignis explaining how he REDACTED during the REDACTED where REDACTED happened. As is my mantra whenever one of these is announced, I really should get to playing those DLC packs.

Finally, Square-Enix surprise-announced the Western release of the remaster to Romancing SaGa 2, an old-school RPG designed by Akitoshi Kawazu. What this means is that, though the game may look like a Final Fantasy, there are a lot of unorthodox, complicated, and oftentimes broken systems running underneath. Much of the franchise has been Japan-only, so that this remaster would be released in the States at all is a momentous occasion for anyone with a love of the genre and/or its history. Romancing SaGa 2 gets my pick for Game of the Week.

Whew. Most of this week’s releases make me glad that at this time of year, I am buying for other people.

Battlefield 1: Turning Tides gives you maps and scenarios from the ill-fated Dardanelles campaign, including the Gallipoli landing, which is well known to us Aussies as the kind of stunningly mismanaged defeat that creates a national myth. Pro tip: Play as the Ottomans.

Hammerwatch looks like a reasonable stocking-stuffer: like Gauntlet, but with more tactical depth and pixel art. So too does Nine Parchments, a Diablo clone by the makers of Trine, where you all get to be the wizard.

My Vita only ever comes out of hibernation in these summer months, so it’s good to see a shmup (Super Hydorah) and a classic Square RPG (Romancing SaGa 2) release in time for the holidays.

Anyhoo, my pick this week is Ultimate Chicken Horse. It’s a couch co-op platformer with a few twists: You each get to add (or remove) some stuff before you play a level, and you take it in turns to try and beat the level. It could be fun to play with kids who don’t yet care about scores or winning.

I'm stoked that Romancing SaGa 2 is getting a release. I'd get it on Vita, but will instead get it on Switch which is the new Vita.

I never got around to playing this game on the PS1...maybe I'll play it on the Vita. My backlog on the Vita is considerably smaller than on other consoles.

Saga on the old switch.

There aren't that many games that my wife has gotten into, but Okami was one of them. Glad to hear it got a remake.
