GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

Maybe it's a Firefox issue? I use Chrome, and I've never seen that problem.

Tested a bit. This post doesn't display for me on Firefox, but does in Chrome and Edge, so definitely a Firefox issue. Disabling all addons makes no difference. I suppose I'll look to the Firefox support forums for help.

FWIW I just tested on Chrome and Firefox and they both worked.

What version of FF? I'm running 57.0.1 64-bit

The same: 57.0.1 (64-bit).

Man, that's bizarre. I'm totally stumped.

That post fails for me on Firefox 57.0.something, whatever's current. I've seen other posts fail, too.

Hmm, I've had that issue for a while now in Firefox, always figured it was because of my various settings and add-ons.

I don't know what to believe anymore!

Not just a Firefox issue. As I said, I have seen it intermittently on Chrome too.

Looks like when images are rendered the alt text is set to something like "IMAGE(https://example.com/image.jpg)" My hunch is that if the image doesn't load, the ALT text is being rendered in its place. I can't recreate the issue, so I'm mostly postulating a possible cause. There are many reasons a third party image may not load, e.g. the server on the other end doesn't respond, the CDN decides to challenge the request, some layer of the third party service has reached a bandwidth or request limit, etc.

When I've seen it happen, it has usually been due to the image's host blocking embedding.

Sometimes it can look like it's working because you have loaded that image before and it loads from cache instead of hitting the host. But someone else comes along and tries to view it and they get the alt tag text.

I wonder if it's a combination of referrer blocking with some kind of exception if you're logged in to Twitter?

Eureka!

The debug console in Firefox says: "The resource at “https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DQTbAi5U...” was blocked because tracking protection is enabled."

So that explains that. Turning off the tracking protection option in my settings 'fixes' the problem.

Glad that works for you, but I have the "Do Not Track" option turned off in Chrome, and it just happened to me:

When I attempted to open that image, Google apparently went into a login loop - the error I got was "too many redirects from accounts.google.com".

Clearing cookies did not fix it.

I guess there's nothing you can do about this on the GWJ end.

Nope, that's either a browser issue or an issue with the URL of the link that was pasted in. In this case, based on the error you got, I'd guess it's a URL to a file in something like Google Drive which is attempting to do some sort of authentication.

Feature request: support for the .mp4 gif format that Imgur introduced a while back using either the Image or Video embedding tool. For some of them you can edit the url to end in .gif and they will work but others (like this one) don't.

Embed with .mp4:

Trying to put a Unicode emoji in a message using Chrome on Windows 10 and the toolbar Touch Keyboard results in an error.

Yeah. I mentioned quite a while back that it looks like the DB behind the site isn't configured to allow full unicode support. (Needs character set utf8mb4, most likely.) This is probably a weighty operation at this point.

Maybe just handling the error more gracefully would be doable.

Which reminds me... maybe the site could have a more friendly message when a login cookie expires.

YOU DON’T HAVE PERMISSION TO ACCESS THIS PAGE is a little... hostile.

YOU DON’T HAVE PERMISSION TO ACCESS THIS PAGE, HACKER SCUM.

Look at you, h-h-hacker. Pathetic creature of meat and bone. Trying to access a page you don't have permission for.

I must not access this page.
Accessing this page is the mind-killer.
Accessing this page is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my lack of permissions.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the lack of permissions has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Did something change today with the way mobile pages are rendered? They just started overlapping the edges of my screen.

I'm browsing on Chrome on my Pixel 2. The app hasn't been updated in over a week. In my system display settings, I have the font and display size set to Large. In Chrome, text size is 100%. The edges of the page were never cut off before this evening.

Installed Firefox to check, and it looks similar.

Starting this evening, topic lists started looking like this:

It happens when one of the words in the title is too long, frequently when it is multiple words with a slash or something. There is one right now in the first page of the games forum. I have complained about it before here too.

I have complained about it as well, both in this thread (well, the equivalent on the old forums) as well as via PM to the OP of threads where it happens.

It is a PITA.

Which thread is currently causing the problem?

Would it be possible in the future to put the 'Favorites' tab button more consistently on desktop and more prominently on the mobile site instead of just burying it in the hamburger menu?

I'd much prefer to use Favorites instead of Recent, but currently the Favorites tab does not always appear whereas the Recent Activity tab does. Furthermore, on mobile it takes extra taps to get to the (super tiny) star icon.

Thanks for considering!

When I saw it last week in the Games forum it was the Soundtrack thread with the 'Appreciation/Discussion' long word. It looks like someone edited the title recently to have spaces around the slash which fixed it for that one.

Previously it was the Drawing / Sketching / Digital Painting thread. But it looks like they added spaces since the last time it was on the front page.

1: When I am on my favorites page. And click on the "Mark all read". The page just goes white. And does nothing. I am on Windows 10, on the Chrome browser.

2: Can we get "wargaming.net" added to "Game Identities"? Since World of Tanks, World of Warships, and Total War Arena are all on that platform? Same for Epic Games ( Fortnite )? And someplace to put Origin, and GoG names as well? Maybe "External Services"? All the digital distributions ones could prolly go under "External Services" anywho. But i guess that's dependent on a public API?

I know it's been brought up before, but I'm dropping in to say I'd really, really like a search option that's not based on google or some kind of 'best match' algorithm that can tell me "here are the results for posts you've made in X thread" and "here is where *keyword* has turned up in X thread".

Thanks for all the unseen work you put in for the site to be running as is, though
