Giant Bomb Bomb-All

No way Wolfenstein gets that high. They turned me away from looking into it by repeatedly talking about how average/bad the actual gameplay is designed. Story alone doesn't usually make it too far in their rankings, iirc.

This is the best h*ckin' story in videogames. I think that'll matter.

I agree that'll matter... for Best Moment, or Best Story or some other award like that. But while I think Wolfenstein will be on the list I think it'll be bottom three and its real reward will be one of those bits, not the top ten list.

“It got its due earlier.”

Best Moment is probably just Best Wolfenstein Moment of 2017, this year. That game has at least five that I can remember that would top that list any other year.

Even people who didn't really dig the gameplay--and, for the record, I think a lot of that is trying to play with a controller, it is way slicker with a mouse and keyboard--couldn't stop raving about it. I think it'll do very well.

It's probably going to be two moments from Wolfenstein and two moments from Yakuza 0 (Majima's introduction and Kuze's motorbike sewer) then a fight between which of them is the final 3.

There's a few more than just two that I bet will get a mention, though I don't know how many they'd "list".

Spoiler:

Axing Caroline a question
Returning home
BJ's execution/the courtroom scene
Hitler
The Hitler achievement (separately, and this is a litmus test of your goodness as a human being)
The party scene
Everything in the ending up until The Song

PUBG is in the Hitman spot...

Speaking of which, Hitman's retail release was actually this calendar year.

Hitman was released before that, it wasn't in early access as it was being sold episodically. And Giant Bomb doesn't give awards to Game of the Year titles that collect the game alongside DLC, so that ain't going to happen.

As bnpederson said, Hitman's release was this year. The GOTY and Complete Editions were released this year but the entire game was released last year.

If rereleases counted, Jeff would have made sure Burnout Paradise won at least 4 times.

Heheheh... in regards to NieR and the game of the year discussions... https://twitter.com/alex_navarro/sta...

I saw that, and I DON'T KNOW IF THAT MEANS I'M HAPPY OR SAD. Probably sad.

1. PUBG
2. Nier Automata
3. Super Mario Odyssey
4. Cuphead
5. Wolfenstein 2
6. Zelda BotW
7. Night in the Woods
8. Horizon Zero Dawn
9. Dream Daddy
10. Destiny 2

I feel like PUBG is the Hitman of this year for GB (except for the fact it is not nearly as good )

2-4 could be in any order, Mario and Cuphead were liked by everyone but Nier will have a few very vocal supporters.

The bottom half I have no confidence in whatsoever and I wouldn't be surprised if BotW is lower because outside of Dan nobody on the staff really seemed to be overly enthusiastic about it.

Tacoma, Edith Finch, Pyre, Life is Strange, and Yakuza 0 could all get on there but I don't think those games have been talked about much lately, so who knows?

If you think Odyssey is better than BOTW I don't know what to tell you.

So does that make it #2 or #11?

Spoiler:

Having zero investment in the game, I kinda want it to be #11 as I'm finding Nier fans as insufferable as the Undertale & Bloodborne cultists. :p

No idea! Well, I at least think it'll make the top 10.

I totally agree, but it's super hard to say whether the Giant Bomb gang as a collective will have anything approaching good sense in that regard.

As a Nier fan, I hope I don't come off as insufferable. I get why many/most people won't necessarily connect with the game in the same way I did, but that game and ending resonated with me in a way I haven't seen from a game in a decade or more.

I'd say the Giant Bomb staff in general have a fondness for Mario games that far exceed Zelda. Can't say I agree even slightly but it is what it is.

If Austin were still there I'd say BOTW might make the top spot. Without someone good at debating (i.e. not Dan) who loved that game to bits and with Jeff obviously not into it, I can see it lower down.

Still not below Wolfenstein, though. I don't care how awesome those set pieces were (and they were awesome), that's a Moment of the Year winner and a barely in the list overall.

26 hours

Yep. It was a pretty good year.

Edit: well, for video games anyway.

To be fair, 10 hours of it is Dan yelling about fast food and wrestling.

Well.

If I listen to that exclusively that should last me the entire month of January.

So who's gonna try their hardest to avoid spoilers and listen to the full 26 hours to get the reveals in "real time"?

That is great and very funny but... shouldn't there be 25 squares?

That said, at least 14 of those are locks.

Yeah, there was also no Free Space in the middle, but what can you do.
