Dark Souls III Catch-All 2.0

I had a hard time finding a weapon better than the fully upgraded long sword. It hits hard and fast and has decent range.

Dark Sword (even with the nerf)

I made it to the 2nd area over the weekend. So far it’s been a lot easier than High Wall. I’m sure grinding the lothric Knights is responsible for that. I stopped at giant doors that lead into a courtyard with a tree dude. Seemed like an obvious boss fight and I still want to look around the area more.

One thing I don’t like is I’ve been hit through walls/stairs more than any other DS game and that’s saying a lot. Never liked that enemies could do that.

Not sure how spoiler free you are going so here is a spoiler...

Spoiler:

There is a covenant that can be missed if you don't really explore the area beforehand.

I think I got the one you’re talking about.

Getting in the cage on the one dudes back?

I picked up the deluxe version of this in the Xbox Black Friday sale because I wanted to move over from PS4, where I played it at launch. I'm once again really enjoying the High Wall area, and medieval castle areas have always been my favorites in the Souls series.

I'm going for a Moonlight Greatsword build this time. On PS4 I think I was a Quality build (STR/DEX) with a lot of archery, mainly for ranged DPS on bosses.

I'm making quick progress so far, as you might expect on a second character. I'm trying to figure out what weapon to use until MLGS. I started as a Knight and I'm always happy using a Longsword in these games, but I think I should try and shake things up a bit. I tried using the Deep Axe you get early on, but that didn't seem to be working for me.

Ha. I did the same thing when starting my new character. Tried using a new weapon, to get away from the Katana I mostly used in the last go-round.
It didn't work. The Crow Qwills just didn't fit my fighting style.
And last night, I got super, super lucky in a summon for the first boss of the first DLC, and managed to down that boss. So now I have that soul weapon, and access to the second DLC, where a bunch of high tier items are available for me to sprint to.

The interesting thing I've found about playing through on a brand new character is how being really familiar with the game is sort of self-correcting in terms of ease of play-through. Yes, you know where the surprises are and how to fight the enemies, but you also aren't gaining as many souls, since you aren't dying, and therefore aren't leveling up as much.

I've been going mostly strength & dex and using some boss sword I made. Hollow Greatsword I think? Seems pretty good so far. I also like the basic Longsword I started out with. Has a good moveset and doesn't seem to take much stamina.

That's the sword I used on my first play through. It will get the job done in almost every occasion, but I did keep a smaller quicker sword leveled up too just in case I needed a bit more speed.

Thank you for posting that, Wink! I had already bought the regular version on Steam during the sale when I was reading though this thread and noticed your post. I was able to return the standard version and pick up the deluxe edition. So for $2 more I now have the season pass, and it’s all thanks to you!

Deep Axe until I got my hands on a Claymore (for 2 handed use mostly) which I used for the rest of the game. Elite Knight Set except for Wolnirs crown, no use stat wise but it's swaggy

There are two type of Dark Souls players.
Armor as Stats
and Fashion Souls.

Probably why I like Dex-build (My DS1 garb is the Crimson set (although the gold-hemmed robes are a close second), it's light and I like the look -- armour-stats don't matter if you're trying to avoid being hit, at all.

And why I'm rocking the Desert Sorceress Set in DS3. It was actually a decent light armor in DS2, but not so much in DS3. But hey, as you say, if you don't get hit...

Played a few minutes, last night. It's pretty! And holy crap... it's so fast!

Oddity during character creation - the "paper doll" (on the right) did not change, at all... build, body hair, skin colour... nothing. You can see/hear my confusion during the stream.

What about Naked Souls? That was me all the way through III (and many replays of the previous games).

Unacceptable in polite company

it is the only acceptable attire for SL1

This is exactly why the Souls games need a refashion option to change gear appearance like Nioh has. Then people would be able to do stats and Fashion Souls at the same time.

Heresy!!

These days I go fashion until I hit a boss or area that gives me trouble; then I use armor for resistances.

I finally had to go back to the Black Armor set (with silver mask, because... even with Armor for Stats, it's still fashion souls) to deal with the First Boss of the second DLC.
Then it was back to the Desert Sorceress Set.
I wonder why they decided to remove armor upgrading for 3...

I assume to make Fashion Souls more viable. Like weapons, once people upgrade something they tend to stick with it. I think they wanted people to change armor more often.

Ehh, I'm not sure. You can always farm the titanite, and especially by mid game, you're usually swimming in the +1 to +4 range of titanite without farming it.

Well, after getting through the poison swamp with my Assassin...

I dropped him - for a Deprived! (I've never started with one before), man that early-game is rough... that said:

Iudex Gundyr, Vordt, Greatwood, Crystal Sage, Deacons, Watchers, Wolnir, Old Demon King, and Pontiff are all dead (I've been playing a lot, and not updating here).

Aldrich, and Yhorm have been returned to their thrones

I had the (apparent) bug where the "summon" didn't work for Yhorm

Spoilering for the "sensitive":

Spoiler:

There's something about getting to a "wrong" area between Seigward and the Yhorm fight that can cause Seigward to not appear in the fight - so I didn't get him to honour his promise... I'll have to kill Seigward to get his armour, and I'm not sure if I can/want to :(

More specific to the Yhorm fight, itself:

Spoiler:

I spent the first few runs, just whacking away at him, I never paid much attention to his health, and would get him down to, maybe, half-ish, before I'd mess up, and lose. Then I started noticing that hits on his ankles don't seem to do anything at all!I switched to a weapon with more of an overhead smash - and started hitting him, but noticed that the damage dealt was minuscule. I figured that, okay, maybe they really want me to use the sword I found in his room. Damage output was pathetic. Checked the description again - "something something, bring giants to their knees". Weapon skill, seems to be the ticket. Spent way too long doing "slightly breezy, slashes, and upward thrusts" before I noticed that it could/needed to be charged up. Yhorm downed quickly after that. Man, I'm dumb...

I've moved on to the Painted World - man I HATE the Crow Knights... H A T E - the Rapier ones are a little less annoying, in that I could parry them, but the f*cking "Wolverines"... f*ck those guys! Vilheim parried to death. Now, getting cut to ribbons by Scythe-Lady, only ever getting her down to ~1/2 health.

Not sure how much time I'll get, over the Xmas period

Scythe lady is one of the more fun, and tougher, boss fights. But I love that boss soul weapon.

Yeah I had to do some digging for the Sigward joining to know where to release him from in order to get him out for the fight.

Wait are you cross souls posting or is there a painted world in DS3? I am so confused right now. Is it in the DLC? I have never been.

Ashes of Ariandel - is a new/different Painted World in DS3.

RE: Seigward -

Spoiler:

I did find, and free him, but if you've gone past a certain point, you "complete" his quest, but he won't appear in the fight.

PS: should I even bother "spoiler tagging" - I think I've been pretty inconsistent, anyway.
