FFXIV: catch all

I tried PVP for the first time the other day with some friends. It still feels very much like a numbers game (i.e, which team isn't trickling/has more players in the fight at X point), but I love the changes they've made to make everybody even. Trimming the skills, and removing benefits from armour is so good!

I'm at a point now where I can confidently say this game is better than WoW. It took me a long time, but I've finally come around. It just does so many things so well.

The only thing I really don't like is the lack of Australian servers. I'm constantly getting hit by attacks I should have avoided. I'm playing with about 350 ping, even while using a VPN service (Mudfish). I can only imagine how much better this game would be with a closer server.

Have you tried playing on Japanese servers? If you are comfortable with auto translate I know some Australian friends that do that (most of them don’t granted because they want local chat not just auto translate). Of course, if even your hiragana is decent you can chat that way too. I don’t see a lot of kanji thrown about by players in the game.

I've heard it's better, but all of my IRL and internet friends are on American servers Since I started the game to play with them, I can't really move over to a Japanese server...

I understand. I have a Japanese alt for some of my friends there which is why I knew there were some Australians playing on a Japanese server. Most of the active players I know are on a North American server, so that is my main.

What server do you guys currently play on? Gonna be giving this another go and want to play with all the cool kids

NM, found it. Midgardsormr it is!

EDIT: Alright. Character name in game is Praxir Void. I need one of you to figure out how to get me into the guild or free-whatever-its-called.

Sargatanas, represent! o/

Edit: Have fun! Maybe we can team up for some cross-server stuff every now and then! I'm not sure how it works, but when you're hitting dungeons, I'll see if I can line something up.

If you are on the data center, you can be friends across server and party up across server.

Few of my friends ran me through the extreme ARR trials today, and they were all great! The mechanics really shine on the harder difficulties. I think those smart little boss fights are my favourite part of the game, and I love that there's no trash mobs before or after. Just pure fun!

On our first clear of Titan Extreme, I even got the mount!

Now I'm torn between riding the sweet Magitek armour mount which looks cooler, or the fancy horse which is rarer

You can use random summon. I usually choose based on the music I am in the mood for.

It was a nice surprise seeing Argent's name pop up in my retainer's sales history. Buying up all that excess materia that the Stormblood MSQ's have been handing me.

You'd be surprised how many Heavens Eye Vs and VIs I can break while melding my raid gear

I'll be on Storm Ryins a lot in the next few days, as I understand some folks want invite to the LS. On Argent, I don't have LS slots, they are all filled with raiding crap, sorries!

But if people need advice or info in-game, feel free to hit me up!

Yea the Guilds are called "Free Companies". Separate from the Free Company you can have a "Linkshell". The Linkshell is a giant open chat for any member across any guild.

In order to be invited to a Free Company either:
1. Both players must be online at the same time or
2. You go to the Guilds House and can apply (using the signpost I believe)

Someone else will have to list the GWJ house plot location. I'm not in GWJ, but i'm in the Linkshell. And unfortunately I think only Ryins can invite to the LS.

Ryins you may want to submit a ticket asking for LS master if the current master isn't active. That way we can have more leaders to make sure it doesn't tengo uniform. I think you're the only active leader so they may bump you up.

You can find our free company house on Migarsormr in Ul'dah - Plot 44, 1 Ward, The Goblet (Small). I can also invite you to the Linkshell. I've not been on frequently in recent weeks, so if anyone else that's more active at the moment wants escalated permissions, let me know and I'll get it setup.

Yeah, I'm only there on my alt, as the LS isn't really very active. Tannita Feathermoon is LS leader as well as FC leader. If a ticket would help, I can try. I don't want to be LS leader though

That's me! I can promote others to positions to accept invites, etc. Just need to know character names and I'll do it next time I login.

Cool thanks. I've been playing since ARR with a crew of 4 Goodjers. If it's cool, I would suggest making a couple new invite leaders for coverage. I'd be happy to make the effort to get any new players in there to group with. PM sent with the names to promote from grunt.

If any of the newblood want into the LS pm me your names along with playtime windows since we'd both have to be online. We can blast you through content for the MSQ or roulettes.

Thanks, GoldenDog. I've promoted the requested folks, and you all should be able to handle invites now!

So I just reached HW after 160 hours (yeah, wow this game has a tonne of content). That last cinematic was amazing! I wasn't expecting such a long series of events! I was glued to my seat.

Upon reaching Ishgard, I was level 56. I figured I'd unlock AST and use that job to do my roulettes as I didn't want to out-level the MSQ any more.

It's an...Interesting class. I don't quite understand how it all slots together, but I love how complex it seems. I don't feel nearly as potent as when I'm playing WHM, but perhaps that's due to lower level dungeons not allowing me to use the cards yet.

AST is a weird class, and surprisingly effective at DPS if you're willing to sacrifice healing. I was in one fight recently where an AST was the top damage-dealer for part of the run. I've heard the gist of it is that sacrificing cards boosts your power or something like that, but that mechanic wasn't obvious when I unlocked the class.

I remember hearing someone once describe those pre-HW scenes as "some Game of Thrones level sh-".

I boosted Astro to 60 for the alt server I am playing on. For me it is great because I hate simple classes. Give me three hot bars or bust. It is an interesting learning process to use them effectively and the strategy is fascinating. Above all else, you can sling black holes; that is always gold.

I tried Rival Wings yesterday for the first time. It seems like one of XIV’s better PvP modes. Anyone have tips for PvPing as DRK or WAR?

I like WAR since Holmgang and Onslaught give you a lot of manueverability Uh, I think in theory you save up for fell cleaves, then trap them down, and smash their faces.

That said, empirical evidence suggests I'm bad at PVP So it's either my theory is wrong or execution. I think it's the later though.

Progress report:

Hey, look at me in my fancy new clothes!

I just reached level 60, with just the final dungeon and trial left to complete in Heavensward. Wow! It really picked up after the pre-patch stuff. A lot more interesting missions, a more streamlined story, and a bunch of cool new spells to play with.

White Mage really started to feel great past level 50. Stone 3 and Aero 3 (especially Aero 3, considering it stacks with Aero!) were huge DPS increases and made you feel strong! I loved the instant-cast assize, and the long-lasting bubble you can put up for party members to hide under.

The lily mechanic seems a bit odd, in that I never really paid it much attention. I'm assuming it becomes more important moving into Stormblood, but it seemed odd that none of my abilities really utilise them yet.

Overall, loving this game more each day! Some of those Heavensward dungeons and trials really stand out as amazing instances.

So you build up Lilies (1-3) through Cure (1 or 2) and when you use a special off GCD (Global Cool-Down) skill they will shorten the recast time (depending on the number of Lilies automatically spent).

Spells like:
Benediction
Tetra
Assize

Or you can spend the Lilies on a short-term powerful shield called Divine Benison (level 66, 15% of target's max HP).

I use the shield for tank-busters (or large AoE pulls to give time for Holy) and the cooldown reduction on Assize to increase damage/healing and MP regen. Really you don't have to plan them unless you need the shield at a specific time. They just mean shorter general cooldowns. At end-game some tank busters will do like 75% health. The shield will drop that to 60% or the equivalent (on my warrior) to a 9,000 HP save. Or you can save that blackmage that always stands in the dang puddles.

last played as a paladin /white mage way back before the first expansion. Pondering trying a come back in a healing role again; Hep out my memory please;

I see scholar is still an option, those are the ones who summon the orb thingies people move into to heal ? I don't recall astrologin at all. Are all capable of doing an acceptable job of the task? is there a direct/hot/buff type split for the jobs or or pretty much ultimately all the same?

Astrologian seems to be the current hotness in terms of endgame raid desirability, but they're all good at what they do. AST takes time time to wrap your head around though. White mage is direct heals and AoEs, as you probably recall. And scholar is a pet class. There was a big rebalancing of jobs before Stormblood, and it seems like they're all in a pretty good place right now. It's mostly a matter of what type of gameplay you prefer.

Agree with complexmath. I will reiterate, Astrologian is very busy to learn to play. I like it but I like super complicated classes. Scholar is probably the easiest to learn because your fairy takes some of the pressure off while you are learning

White mage is direct heals and direct damage focus.
Scholar is shields, AoE, and DoTs focus.
Astrologian is buffs and can change to either HoTs or Shields (so they pair the best with either of the two above or two Astros since shields don't stack)

White Mage is the strongest healer when stuff hits the fan.
Scholar is the best at mitigating damage before it occurs, real strong if you know the fight.
Astro is best at increasing overall party effectiveness.

I swap between all 3. They all have the same basic kit of single target/aoe/and 'oh snap' heal options. They all have DoTs and direct damage. So they are all viable.

In extreme cases, I prefer Lightspeed from Astro, and Thin Air + Largesse from WHM over Scholar's Aether Stacks. At upper levels Scholar's pet heal is pretty weak unbuffed, but Fey Wind and mass effect removal from Selene are very useful, so few use EoS for the AoE HoT.

If you want to scholar I highly recommend a macro build. I use macros to control the pets (automatic heal potency buff when up), instant ground target AoE placement, DoT application + spread, summon swaps (moving their skills onto primary skill bar automatically in the same spot as prior pet)... Makes the class much easier to play well. Problem is once you blow through your Emergency Tactics and Aether Stacks you got to eat the pet because you got no HoT or strong AoE restoration on short cooldown. The design is you shield the target and the pet heals it up to full while shield blocks the damage. 6 Aether Stacks seems like a lot, but when it takes 2 to recover a tank buster, 1 to drop a shield, spread plague or enegery drain, they go quick.

Astro has like the worst MP management because they have to waste Ewer on themselves during a tough phase when they could be spreading spear/balance and they may not get it due to RNG. And it takes a lot of work to mess with cards while dodging mechanics, tossing heals, and dps'ing. So they got a full spread skill which is unfortunately another RNG.

WHM drawback is they got nothing other than heals, but heals for days.

So I like one WHM for big heals/HoTs and one either Scholar or Astro for shields and buffs. But play whichever one appeals to you. Heck do all 3. I had fun making each one.

That’s better, more specific advice than I could give. I’ve been playing the game five(?) years now but I have never run end game content until I can overpower it thanks to new content coming out.
