Rollercoaster Renaissance - Planet Coaster, Rollercoaster Tycoon World & Parkitect

 and we have the greatest idle thumbs podcast ever coming up.

Weren't they kinda predicting this recently when they were talking about Planet Coaster suddenly getting a bunch of Universal tie-in items?

So, err, uh... instead of accidentally killing guests with an unsafe attraction, we're supposed to accept it as an inevitability?

Sounds like more of a Risk Management game...

Oh, another park management (but primarily building) game from the folks who brought us one of the most boring park "management" games ever? Yay!

I mean, wait, no, sorry, I meant ugh.

They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

If we can, we must!

I don't see the attraction of a Jurassic Park Sim game. What is the end game, dinosaurs can kill people so you need to spend extra resources, if everything is running well you just have a zoo simulator on an island.

Pretend the forum embed could take you right to 0:58.

Because I was fifteen in 1993?

Big difference from being 16 as I was in 1993?

It just seems that it is one of those things that seems great on paper but when you play it just becomes "meh."

Big expansion sized update for Planet Coaster is live. For free. Honestly, those guys have been really cool at providing content for this game. I really need to give it more time. I think I'll start a new autumnal park tonight.

In other news, I got Parkitect the other day, finally, and while buggy, so far it's everything I want in a game like this. Detailed management, awesome stats on patrons, lots of pre built rides and so on. So happy so far.

You should check out the world of mods for it....

So in everyone’s own opinion which is better, Parkitect or Planet Coaster? I picked up Coaster already, but could return it if Parkitect is the better option.

I think it comes down to whether you prefer to design parks, or manage the money. Given how much you like Logistical, I don't find your preference here surprising in the least.

Entirely different games of you ask me. Parkitect is a modern take on Rollercoaster Tycoon, whereas Planet Coaster is a true modern Theme Park game. While it may lack a bit on the management front, it is a fantastic, detailed Theme Park builder.

Yeah, Planet Coaster was great, but I'm not great at designing rides. I prefer optimizing a park for maximum guest enjoyment (like placing benches. I LOVE BENCHES) and Parkitect is WAY better at this, I feel.

But yeah, if you wanna design awesome coasters, Planet Coaster is your jam.

I do love designing awesome coasters.

Thanks for the tips guys. I was going to get Planet Coaster on the Steam sale but I like park management and suck at designing rides. Close call!

For anyone on the fence, Elysium did a great Let's Play of Planet Coaster on the GWJ Youtube channel which may help you decide if the game is for you.

Planet Coaster is about the park and the attractions there. Tycoon style games are about the *business* of the park and its attractions. So it depends on what you want to do. (I know, I'm not the first to say it, but it bears repeating when people are contemplating which to get.)

Got Planet Coaster! Haven't played a park game since Sim Theme Park. Looking forward to it.

It's a really beautiful, customisable theme park creator. Hope you have a good time with it.

At 11 bucks and change on the winter Steam Sale, I finally cracked and picked up Planet Coaster....and 3 hours just disappeared somehow.

I apparently suck at Planet Coaster's challenge mode. Does anyone know a good starter guide to not spiral into bankruptcy?

Oh my.

Missed this. I've never referenced a starter guide but when I've played the key has been to avoid roller coasters and focus on getting money from adding the carnival thrill rides, I usually have six (with 3 mechanics) and a small vendor area before building my first roller coaster (which should be small).

I have always found coasters to be cost inefficient (mostly because you need a lot of extras), use the other smaller thrill rides and the vendors to subsidize the coasters. Do not take out a loan for a coaster, it is fine to take them out for smaller rides and vendor areas (but try to avoid them altogether). Then again this may just be my play style.

I want to know what this looks like from the outside and how it was made. Does the game have alien models in it?

** shrug **

I don't own it.

I got it over Christmas and I find the following works

Don't hire too many staff
Adjust shop and ride prices upwards to the point that people don't turn away from them
Start with flat rides and only do coasters when you are in net profit every month
Landscape ride lines as the more stuff there is the happier the sims are

Hope this helps
