NFL 2017 Week 12 Thread

Pages

The Jaguars are half a game out of first round bye territory. Currently those spots are held by the Patriots, as well as the Steelers, whom the Jaguars have a head-to-head victory over. It's Week 12 and we can say "Jaguars" and "first round bye" in a single, coherent sentence, without any negation words. I don't understand it any more than you do.

Jimmy Garoppolo becomes an NFL starting quarterback this week. It's almost anti-climactic after the shock of the trade deadline move wore off, but after an Aaron Rodgers-like early career of sitting in wait behind a seemingly-eternal Hall of Famer, it's The Handsome One's time to shine. The bar he needs to clear hasn't exactly been set very high. Beat Hard's statistics to date: 54% completion, 4:5 TD:INT, 205 yards per game, 70.8 passer rating. Beat Hard did accomplish one important thing in his final outing, though: a win, taking any pressure of avoiding an 0-16 season off of Garoppolo's shoulders.

The Chiefs have signed Darrelle Revis, in what feels like a bit of a panic grasp to a season threatening to slip away. After starting 5-0, the team lost 4 of their next 5, bringing them to a 6-4 record that still puts them in the hunt, but with the team's arrow currently pointed straight down. One of their biggest woes has been run defense, where they rank 29th, which is what you f*cking get when you don't keep Dontari Poe. (PFF currently grades Poe at an 81.0, his best grade since 2013).

Maybe panic isn't the right word, as apparently the Chiefs have been trying to sign Revis all season. At least according to an unnamed source cited by Adam Schefter. Looking at the PFF grades of the guys the Chiefs have lining up opposite Marcus Peters, I guess I can see why.

Amari Cooper has a league-leading 19.6% drop rate. Last year he was at 4.6%.

Trent Brown, the giant 7th round offensive tackle of the 49ers that I've been raving about, is 5th in PFF's pass block efficiency metric among offensive tackles. He's allowed only 1 sack and 14 total pressures.

Prince Amukamara is 4th in fewest yards per coverage snap. I have never understood why the entire league underrates this guy.

Josh Gordon practiced yesterday. He is an active member of the Cleveland Browns. He's back. He will rescue the Browns from 0-16. Probably better that he does it sooner rather than later though. You know, just to be safe.

Jerry Jones is backing down. He has rescinded his threat to sue the league over Roger Goodell's contract. This comes after a story from the Wall Street Journal confirming the previously whispered rumors that other owners had discussed the removal of Jerry Jones from franchise ownership. Whether or not any action would even be possible, the fact that it was a topic of discussion is a strong rebuke of Jones from the rest of ownership.

Pick'Ems

This is a terrible week for picks. First, Thanksgiving takes 3 games off the board. And what's left are incredible one-sided. Only one game (TEN/IND) has a point spread within a field goal. 6 games have point spreads above a touchdown.

New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Rams
Jacksonville Jaguars at Arizona Cardinals
Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts
Carolina Panthers at New York Jets
Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens

At least the night game is on NBC instead of NFL network

Blair Walsh made the GWJ weekly banner!

(Almost as impressive as failing a playoff 29yd FG and then getting signed by the team that benefitted from the miss.)

Prince Amukamara is 4th in fewest yards per coverage snap. I have never understood why the entire league underrates this guy.

I put the over/under on Jim Bob Cooter references during the early game at five.

I tried to use one last week, but the .jpg missed wide left and became the banner of some JRPG thread instead.

I'll take the over. I'll collect by halftime.

Also, take the Jets over Carolina. The Panthers normally suuuuuuck after a bye week. The Jets are kind of a trap game, seeing as though they're not actually tanking.

2017 can't end soon enough.

Going to be at least 12 if not more by halftime.

Ground can't cause a fumble but that was still funny.

I love GWJ.

I hate the audio in the FOX broadcast in that it picks up everything said by the fans near the booth. If I wanted to hang out with drunk assholes today, I'd go to Thanksgiving dinner at a miserable family's house.

You're in this thread and MilkmanDanimal is here, so it's like you're already there. Expect he's on pills.

At what point do the Vikings have to start considering Case Keenum for their starting QB, and not just the seat-filler for the injured guys?

Dilly, dilly!

Except for the part where he started the play a second before everyone else, that was a fantastic kick block.

So the Cowboys are so mad about losing their star running back they're taking out opposing kickers left and right.

"Young Sheldon" is really a thing?

Update: I might have jinxed myself.

Just love the fact that Jerry Jones gets to watch his team completely disintegrate and miss the playoffs.

Pathetic old fool getting exactly what he deserves.

There's no way they go back. Keenum doesn't take sacks and when you play for Minnesota that's who you need to be to be successful.

Bradford will break again and Teddy is an unknown.

Also a factor to keep in mind: all three players are unrestricted free agents come the end of the season.

Case was signed on just a 1-year backup deal. Bradford signed the 2-year deal with Philly before the trade. And Bridgewater could have been under contract for 2018 if the team had exercised his option year, but they declined to do so.

As of this moment, they won't have any of them on the roster next year. So they either need to make some decisions soon and try and get someone to agree to a contract extension during the season, or they are going to have to deal with the open market and/or tags.

My tiny sponsored banner ad in my Yahoo fantasy app is....

'Destination Cleveland, See for Yourself How Cleveland Rocks'

Thought I should share that.

That 4th and 3 was pretty much the Giants season in a nutshell.

It is, it's as awful as you'd expect, only there's no laugh track despite having the same kind of writing so every attempt at a joke is not only unfunny, but very uncomfortable.

Blah, forgot to make picks this week. Oops

That makes two of us, I think...

Edit: Yup, oops.

I hate football.

The Buccaneers pass defense held all receivers not named Julio Jones to a TOTAL of 64 yards, completely dominating the non-Julio pass offense. Really just shut all the non-Julios down.

Spoiler:

Julio Jones had 253 yards receiving.

How many Vernon Hargreaves does it take to cover one Julio Jones?

Trick question! Doesn't matter, they can't!

Niners apparently reversed course a couple days ago and decided Beat Hard is going to start one more week.

Guess they didn't want to throw Garoppolo out there against Seattle's defense.
