Giant Bomb Bomb-All

I don't think Nier makes it in. Alex is going to push like hell for it, but Jeff didn't like the gameplay at all, so he's gonna go hard against, and Alex usually loses those kinds of fights. I don't think anyone else in that crew fought with depression like Alex does, so I don't think it's going to connect with them enough to get them to go to bat for it too, so it'll be another Thumper situation for him.

The bottom 5 of the list is where the personal games come in. Hyper Light Drifter from last year is a good example. I can see Nier making it in the bottom half. Ben also has played and really liked Nier so Alex isn't alone. Jeff appreciates the story enough.

I think Wolfenstein will have a similar issue. Everyone loves the story, moments, and progression but all agree it just doesn't play great. I like keeping a running tab of their top-10 games of the year and see if my prediction is close. Like JeremyK said further upthread, the real fun is just listening to the 4 hour long conversations about the games.

Right now I have some grouping of Mario, Zelda, Cuphead, Destiny 2, Wolfenstein, Nier, and then a bunch of possibles (Resident Evil 7, A Night in the Woods, Pyre, etc.).

Edit: And I PUBG screws everything up since I am running on the assumption that it won't make it out of early access.

I'll be kinda sad if PUBG winds up at the top, but that's how I wind up feeling about any MP-only game that's only good if you've got a solid group of people to play with.

Cuphead is interesting, and I'll be curious to see how they approach the apparent difficulty and therefore lack of accessibility to a wider audience. Probably not at all, I expect.

cup head cuphead

If PUBG makes it on there under the current rules, I think it'll be in large part because it was (pre-hacking) a game that they enjoyed as a single-player multiplayer game. Jeff certainly played a lot of it by himself at the start and they were always talking about how it was a different game when playing solo versus groups.

I think, even if it does make it on the list, it won't go top two simply because of the issues they're having right now with massive cheating. Can you give Game of the Year to PUBG as it was four months ago?

So I haven't gotten around to picking up PUBG yet for reasons. But the constant buzz about it makes me kinda want to try it. If it goes on sale this holiday season, is it worth picking up, or has it gone back around to being crappy, and now it's not worth it?

1) +2 more people. There has to be some kind of law that the more people you add to a meeting, exponentially it gets harder to come to a consensus on anything. I'd be nervous about having a group this large picking a lunch.

It's the same amount they had when Austin was there.

2015:
Jeff, Brad, Vinny, Alex, Drew, Dan, Jason, & Austin

2016:
Jeff, Brad, Vinny, Alex, Drew, Dan, & Jason

2017:
Jeff, Brad, Vinny, Alex, Dan, Jason, Ben, & Abby

I stand corrected. I thought it was more but you're right. Still quite the crowded room.

Brad is finally getting to it and mentioned it on this week's UPF. He was pretty positive on it other than being kinda meh on the gameplay. He liked the Romeos and Juliets thing which is just the tip of the iceberg to come. He hasn't even got to the first ending, so I think him, Ben, and Alex will be enough to get NieR somewhere in the middle of the list. Yay!

If they actually get PUBG to 1.0, it'll wind up being number 1, because there's no justice in this world.

There is no justice on Murder Island.

You make your own justice.

PUBG GOTY 2017.

(I like NieR: Automata, but I really, really want its Undertale-ass fanbase to feel bad, so I will be forced to root against it. Meme idiots make strange bedfellows.)

Surprised no one has posted this yet but they have announced their new video producer. As far as I know, he's not a white guy but an Asian guy! Meet Jan Jerome Ochoa!

oh good a wrestling fan.

My first thought when his twitter loaded...

That’s fine as long as he’s not a fighting game and/or Dota fan...

Giant Bomb article on Jan Jarome Ochoa. Not much info other than he's basically assisting Jason.

Tell us when you figure out his SSN, please.

After some googling I figured out it's 4. He's Social Security Number is 4.

I bet Jason is real happy right now.

Oh boy, this week's NieR discussion on the Bombcast was fun. I've been waiting for them to discuss all the good and bad stuff about the game, and it's taken forever. Jeff and Brad have finally gotten into route B and, while they have problems with certain aspects, just hearing them gush about certain aspects makes me so happy to hear, and that's so just the beginning! They're kinda the last podcast outfit not to really dig into it, but I feel like there's gonna be some really fun spoiler discussion in the GOTY podcasts. Looking forward to that discussion wrapping up this trash fire of a year for everything except video games. Well, there were some gaming trash fires.

FINALLY! NIER GOTY!

Seriously, I'd love to find time to do a second run through, taking notes, so I can finally write up that thing I've been wanting to.

I'm hoping it can squeeze into the top five, but we'll see. I honestly just can't wait for all the conversation this year since there were so many great games.

Glad to see Jason get some help finally and the new guy seems cool. Though I do once again wonder at GB West's inability to find even just one woman for their staff.

And yet I still go to them for most of my games coverage at this point so... yay hypocrisy I guess.

Unrelated: I think I'd like Exquisite Corps a lot better if they'd pay attention to even like a fifth of how the game's mechanics and systems work. It was fun at first but everybody still making the same mistakes 15 episodes in is getting old.

Alex has gotten better since he played at home at the same time but Abby and Dan only playing once every three weeks really screws them over. Dan and Vinny’s extremely poor memories doesn’t help either.

It’s funny that while I find east and west pretty entertaining their taste in games is so different than mine I don’t get much from them on that front. Vinny and Jason are the only two that even venture into liking similar games as me.

It’s also true that you don’t have to share the same tastes as someone to get relevant and useful info but they sometimes have a tendency to be very dismissive to anything they don’t personally like that I can’t help rolling my eyes.

Yeah... I feel the same way. But as far as gaming news... I listen to the bombcast, for discussion I listen to the beastcast. It's odd... I guess I don't like the west crew much where there is no news, but the east crew I will always listen to.

I tuned out a little bit during the Sims 4 thing, and didn't pick up that Russell had lost Sim Dirtbike, not real Dirtbike.

In case anyone hasn't played NieR Automata, I posted this in the comments on this week's Bombcast because they didn't address it when they talked about Justin McElroy and NieR fishing. If you didn't follow the NieR Automata thread, you most surely missed me bringing it up.

Great podcast this week, and I'm sad we have to wait so long for all the fun GOTY stuff ahead.

I have one small thing extra to note about the NieR fishing and Justin McElroy discussion towards the end of the podcast. Yes, I agree that the ridiculously easy fishing minigame in Automata is a Yoko Taro joke reaction to the criticism of the original NieR's fishing. I also am convinced that ending K is a completely related Yoko Taro joke. This is the one where Jackass gives you a Mackerel to eat as an experiment and warns you that if you eat it you might die. Of course, eating it gives you ending K. Mackerel... McElroy.

The spoilers are light enough not to worry about at this point in my opinion.

I cannot get over this damn merch.

branding so strong.

Please tell me it says "Nobody wins" on the reverse side.

I hate Dan so much. He (or his persona on the show) is such a goddamn moron. It's not even funny, it's just stupid. I hate him so much. And I think Alex's disdain for him is becoming real now.

Is that in response to this week's podcasts? Because I'm just now getting to last week's Beastcast, and while I've got a high tolerance for Dan, his bafflement about card games that don't use regular playing cards, and then D&D in general, is making me want to reach through the phone and smack him. We may have reached peak Dan.

It’s fine to not like a person but I’m generally not a fan of when we project that onto how others must feel.
