The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Thread

Does it crash right as you enter the Soul Cairn, or can you explore a bit first? Do the crashes only happen in a certain part of the Soul Cairn or near a certain item/enemy, or are they general, unpredictable crashes while you run around? Is it always during a particular quest section?

It's been a couple of years and I'm no modder, but as I recall the Soul Cairn had a lot of unique sounds and textures that weren't found elsewhere in the game. Apparently mods that change sounds or textures might cause conflicts that weren't caught in testing by the mod's creator because they only occur in the Soul Cairn (If they're like me, they never want to go back there).

A quick Google suggests that many Soul Cairn CTDs are caused by textures that modify dragonplate armour, as the Keepers in the Soul Cairn wear this armour and a conflict can occur. A symptom of this type of crash would be that it occurs as you approach the tallest towers. Perhaps you could try temporarily disabling your armour mod until after you've left the Soul Cairn?

A less common crash seems to be caused by mods that alter lightning sounds, but your list doesn't look like it would have any of these.

There also seem to be a number of scripting-related crashes associated with particular quests in the Soul Cairn. If you suspect this is the case, you might be able to console-cheat past the problematic quest sections.

Companion mods came up as well, though I don't see any of those on your list either. Apparently trying to take anyone other than Serana (or in addition to Serana) into the Soul Cairn can cause problems.

Interesting, BushPilot. I didn't know that about the dragonplate armor, but that just might be it! The crashes didn't seem particularly predictable, they would happen as I wandered around trying to complete the quest to access Valerica (ie, go kill a bunch of reavers, I think it was). So that would be compatible with the armor conflict. As it is, I've disabled the armor mod, and I've been running the game for nearly two hours without a hitch. Managed to make it out of the Soul Cairn (thank goodness, I hate the place, even more so now).
No mods that would alter the sounds or add companions, so the armor conflict just might be the reason.

And thanks Omni, enabling the log seems like a good plan just in case I run into more trouble.

Anyhow, thank you so much, gang, I kinda panicked back there!

Japanese Skyrim Mod Recreates Bloodborne in Elder Scrolls

Although From Software's Dark Souls series are currently available on the PC, Bloodborne remains a PlayStation 4 exclusive, denying the broader gaming world of its dark and terrible gospel. Exclusivity however didn't stop a Japanese modder from re-creating parts of the game in Skryim.

Modder Vicn spent 2016 working on a Bloodborne mod called Glenmoril, which brings various Bloodborne elements like weapons, armor sets, and even quests to Tamriel. Vicn released a trailer for the Glenmoril mod which you can watch below. I was constantly surprised by just how much Bloodborne stuff Vicn managed to recreate through his mod.

I've been wanting a world to explore and there aren't a lot of games that cut it in this area. Even though I'm not a big fan of the actual mechanics in Skyrim - there aren't many games that can match it for just finding interesting geography, or tidbits of story, dungeons, etc. Too many games follow the UBISoft icon chase model.
The Witcher 3 was very good in this regard too, but I've played it more recently than Skyrim and not ready to jump back into it.

In any case, these are the mods I have so far. Can anyone either confirm they are good choices or recommend additional ones? I'm mostly looking for things that enhance the game graphically. I'm using Skyrim Special Edition. I plan on playing a sneaky archer - something I have never stuck with before as I'm usually sword and shield, so if there is something that improves playing that type of character a lot I'd be open to it.

Here are my mods so far.
Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM
Vivid Weathers Special Edition: I've used Climate of Tamriel with an ENB in vanilla Skyrim.
Realistic Water Two
Skyrim Flora Overhaul SE: I also used this in vanilla.
Enhanced Lights and FX: In vanilla I used Realistic Lighting Overhaul. I'm only going to use the indoor lighting for this since I'm using Vivid Weather.
Footprints
Enhanced Blood Textures SE
Immersive Armors
Total Character Makeover
Book Covers Skyrim

Some other mods I'm using
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch
Unread Books Glow SSE
Achievements Mods Enabler
A Quality World Map
Open Cities Skyrim
Cutting Room Floor
Even Better Quest Objectives.
skyBirds SSE Edition

Bellyaches HD Dragon Texture Replacer Pack makes the vanilla dragons look a bit nicer. On the off chance that "make things prettier" extends to "give me a larger variety of interesting looking dragons" then Diverse Dragons Collection will do that.

Any good town building mods ?

I confess I've never finished this one, but I've gotten about halfway through it and found it well done:
Blackthorn

Sounds like a winner, thanks.

Sure thing. I'm my current game, I'm using his Skyfall Estate home, which I'm liking quite a bit as well.

Both take time and can get a bit grindy, for sure, but I don't remember running into any significant bugs with either of them, and the results are quite nice. They are definitely for someone who wants to build the town/house, not just get it.

I went nuts on mods 170 and counting. Right now I'm putting together mod tools and looking up what are the best ways to run stuff like SSEEdit, Wrye Bash, Loot, FINIS and some other stuff.

I'm also looking into converting a few mods to SSE. The process seems easy enough.

Currently installed mods, The stuff at the bottom with annotations aren't installed.

The game around the game! Nice list! I'd be curious what you think of Helgen Reborn if you get into it some. I have it installed on one character's game but haven't messed with it much yet.

So I've taken my first steps into modding SkyrimVR as vanilla looked like ass inside the helmet.

Probably spent more time mucking around with that than I have actually in Tamriel.

Here's my noob question: how do I actually know that all the visuals mods are actually doing something? It's been a week between playing vanilla and modded, and while I *think* it looks better, I could be kidding myself. I at least got the "you've got mods loaded, achievements will be disabled" message when I start the game (which of course, I've got the mod to re-enable acheivements in, so nerr).

Why not take a before and after pictures. Cosmetic mods are usually just textures and models so can be activated and de activated without a problem. And if you don't actually save the game while the mods are de activated there should be zero problems.

Got the game fired up with only one problem. I forgot that I had to launch the game through SKSE and got a bunch of errors. Once I was able to exit out and start over all was good.

My only problem is learning how all my mods work and setting them up. Like how do I eat, what counts as a drink, how do I feel a water skin, why did I write feel instead of fill, did I just start a romance, and where can I sleep. I mean in real life. I need to stop playing this and sleep right now. Hopefully I will get a bonus to my stats.

I realized I had a problem when I was driving down the road and a butterfly floated in front of my car, and my instant reflex reaction was "GRAB IT!"

One thing that has worked for me when tweaking/testing mods is to create a vanilla profile (maybe just the very basic patch mods and the alternate start mod, etc.) and then use the alternate start mod to quickly create a character that I can get to a city or someplace I want to compare (usually Windhelm works great). Then it's just a matter of activating the game save I'm messing with the profile I'm using, take a look, then switch to the vanilla profile and activate the game save with the other character.

Yep, and if you're using something like Nexus Mod Manager, you can create a 'Stable' profile, containing things you've got 100% working, take a copy of that profile, and start adding more to it, without losing/damaging the stable one you already have.

My list of mods.

Must have:
Unofficial Skyrim Patch - fixes a lot of bugs still left in the game

The following mods together basically are a re-texture of the game to bring it to par with newer games. Makes the world absolutely stunning. I would highly recommend if you have a nice graphics card.
Static Mesh Improvement Mod (SMIM)
High-Res Texture DLC (official) or Skyrim 2017 Textures
Skyrim Flora Overhaul
Pure Waters or Realistic Water Two
Realistic Lighting Overhaul SSE (fixed lighting preset) or SkyrimSE Re-Engaged ENB (customizable post process lighting with tons of options)
Total Character Makeover - more detailed characters
ApachiiSkyHair SSE - the default hair styles are all garbage

The following mods are just quality of life and don't change the game too much.
A Quality World Map
SkyUI
Immersive Citizens - AI Overhaul SE
Realistic Ragdolls and Force - vanilla was just silly with people getting twisted and bent backwards after dieing
Rich Skyrim Merchants - in vanilla no merchants ever had any money. What the heck did they do with all that awesome stuff I sold to them the week before!
Skyrim Better Roads (SkyBeRoads)

The following mods are more quality of life but do have some impact on the vanilla game.
The Paarthurnax Dilemma - No spoilers but I will say that the original choices are all nothing I would have chosen. This mod just allows more realistic options in my opinion.
Unread Books Glow SSE - I'm very OCD and I have to read every book! This helps me track which ones I've read and haven't.
Stones of Barenziah Quest Markers
Immersive Patrols SE
Amazing Follower Tweaks SE - does allow multiple followers which I don't use but also makes the AI much better.
Immersive Weapons
Immersive Armor
Diverse Dragons Collection

After you've finished the main game there are tons of great new content as well.
Beyond Skyrim - Bruma SE
Falskaar
Moonpath to Elsweyr
ThirteenOrange’s Quests Mods
Enderal
Phenderix Magic World
Beyond Reach

Hi all, I've been modding Skyrim by loosely following this guide but picking and choosing and skipping the adult stuff he includes. Anyway, when it came to textures, there were so many that he recommended that I just installed one or two and carried on, ignoring the rest. I've done that and have gone a few sections further on into the guide (so I'm now updating snow for example).

My question is this - I've now decided I want MOAR textures!!! Can I just go back and add some more, now that I've also added things like weather mods? Can I rely on LOOT to sort my load order, or will I be overwriting files that I shouldn't? To give a rough idea of what I've been installing, it's stuff like the USSEP patch, World map, Skyrim Realistic Overhaul (which was HUGE), SMIM, Legacy of the Dragonborn quests, Wet and Cold, Needs and Diseases, Vivid Weathers, Majestic Mountains and JK's Skyrim. But now I really like the look of A Noble Skyrim and I'd quite like to fit it in if it won't break my game.

For pure texture mods, you can go back and install whatever you want. If they are pure texture plugins, I don't think LOOT will have any affect. Rather than ordering via the plugin load order, textures will be applied in the 'last one installed' since they'll be overwriting any previously installed textures. If you're using Mod Organizer 2, you have more control of which texture wins, but Vortex and the like will simply use the last one installed. Textures are by far the easiest and least crash-inducing modifications you can make to Bethesda games. Outside of the increased demand on your machine's resources, the engine itself puts fewer constraints on overloading assets than it does on overloading game logic modifications.

Ok thanks. Fwiw I'm using vortex. It just seems more intuitive than MO and it looks like NMM is no longer supported.

Skyrim friends I need your help. Please accept this side quest.
I loaded Skyrim for the first time in a few years. It appears Nexus Mod Manager no longer works? Nexus indicated it couldn’t connect to the server or whatever to look for an update. Should my previously downloaded mods still work or so I need to start with a new program?
End goal is to load my old save and download the Enderal mod.

Thanks!
Chad

I'm pretty sure that mod requires a new game to play. You also might want to play it without mods accept for maybe texture replacers.

NMM is no more. Vortex replace it on nexus but mod organizer is still the best manager out.

Thank you. Will the old mods I downloaded still work through NMM or is it just completely dead?
So should I deletes the mods nexus mod manager downloaded?

Does Enderal work with Skyrim SE?

Enderal is now a stand alone mod/game.
Get it here.

Thank you. Downloaded and gave it a try. Pretty.

Should I delete Nexus mod and all the mods I downloaded or will those mods still work?
Basically, is there any use for Nexus Mod and what I downloaded before?

Thank you,
Chad

Does that mean Enderal is not compatible with VR then?

polypusher wrote:

Just about to ask about this. I'm guessing it wont work because the scripting language is slightly different. I think they would have to make a version specific to VR. But I haven't look at the mod, maybe it doesn't use scripts but I doubt it.

They still work, it's just that the nexus mod manager won't login to the nexus anymore, so you can't download mods through it, or check for new versions. You can still use NMM to manage manually downloaded mods. You can also add the mods on your hard drive to vortex, like you would with any manually downloaded mod.

Hey man, I ran into this issue while I was modding Skyrim. If you know the location of all of your mod files, I think there's a way to use Mod Organizer 2 to bring them into the fold and have it load them for you. Might be a bit of faffing about on your part, but should be doable.

Thank you for sharing some insight.
So, if I understand, I can load Nexus mod manager to play skyrim and use my old mods. I just can’t access any new ones or update my old ones.

Also, I noticed that Enderal is “not compatible with Skyrim Special Edition” but it’s a stand-alone mod. I don’t even think I need to have Skyrim on my hard drive to play Enderal?
Maybe Enderal initially used the Skyrim classic files during installation to create Enderal? Just curious.

Thank you,
Chad
