I know I’m supposed to be all aflutter about the release of Skyrim on the Switch, but I didn’t particularly like that game the first twelve times Bethesda released it, so I can’t muster much enthusiasm this go ‘round. Talk to me when they release Fallout 3, which is the best modern Fallout game.

This week is all about the chill sandboxes for me. Aside from the release of Farming Simulator 17's Platinum edition, there are two other, smaller games that fit neatly into the “make your own fun” genre. John the Zombie looks to be taking a fair amount of inspiration from Goat Simulator, and I can’t help but approve of that. You play as John, a one-person zombie apocalypse. And you can drive a car, because why not? I hope there’s a cleverly named achievement for leaving your left blinker on.

There’s also Play with Gilbert, which is an absolutely adorable kitten simulator. I love that it’s honestly and unabashedly sweet, so much so that I’ll ignore the fact that the developer thinks a plurality of kittens is a “pack,” when the proper term is "kindle."

But since we’re talking sandboxes, my pick of the week will have to go to Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2. My kids and I absolutely devoured the first one, and the prospect of returning to an open Lego world as Bruce Banner is an automatic win for me. Lego’s (possibly overdone) brand of twee wackiness gets my nod for Game of the Week.

It's the week of the re-releases, where everything old is new again. You can now experience Skyrim on the go with the Nintendo Switch, or in virtual reality. BioShock gets a 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition that only differs from the HD Collection by being $200 and coming with a wicked cool but otherwise pointless Big Daddy statue. Once upon a time I thought I'd be more willing to spend such cash more frivolously when I worked full time and made the big bucks, but I'd say my income can be more accurately described as medium doe. Not a buck in sight in this forest of green.

L.A. Noire also gets a re-release for all platforms, with bonus virtual reality cases for those that do have the big bucks grazing in their bank account. The most notable aspect of this release is that the incredibly misleading interrogation options of "Truth, Doubt, Lie" have been replaced by the much more obvious "Good Cop, Bad Cop, Accuse". That's almost enough to make it my personal game of the week.

Instead, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon snag the pick this week. I skipped out on the prior release and am looking forward to diving into Not-Hawaii, at the very least so that when my niece describes a section of the game she's stuck on I might actually understand what she's talking about.

To our jaded, postmodern eyes, the good cop-bad cop routine looks passé. We forget that it took years of refinement to become the cliché we know today. For instance, did you know that in the 1940s, the good cop-bad cop routine was performed by just one cop? The results were often confusing – play the re-release of L.A. Noire to see what I mean. It’s a shame that L.A. Noire’s investigation and interrogation features didn’t get a chance to be iterated upon; imagine if Assassin’s Creed had been cancelled after just the first game. I guess hiring practically the entire cast of Mad Men ain’t cheap.

Someone must still be playing 2013 co-op shooter Warframe, because it’s getting a major expansion this week. It offers a new area, new class, new gear, a more pronounced day/night cycle with new critters that spawn at night …

Anyone?

As a devotee of Road Rash back in the day, I’m cautiously hopeful for Road Rage. Previous reboots of this motorbikes-with-weapons classic haven’t gone so well, mostly because handling motorbikes with a controller is like performing surgery with an Armatron. They have tried to solve this by slowing time when you start swinging your wrench. Plus there’s some Burnout Paradise going on, with a city where you rock up to street corners to start an event.

Please be good.

This is my Big Holiday Release week.

- Farming Simulator 17 - Platinum Expansion
- Crusader Kings II: Jade Dragon

No AC, CoD, Mario, Wolfie, etc.

Just some plain old DLC for some plain old games.

Couldn't be more excited!

I’m on the verge of double dipping to get FS17 on the Switch, myself.

My understanding is that Warframe wasn't very good when launched, but got updated and patched into a good game. There's about a million people playing daily, so that seems quite healthy.

///

Yall missed out on Deep GachiGASM and Gachimuchi. Two meme games based on gay porn (link is SFW). Classy.

///

For me, I'm simply waiting for December 1st. It's all I care about since Mario Odyssey is under wraps until Christmas.

///

Edit: Totally forgot what Hyakki Castle is. It's a neat looking dungeon crawler that is set during the Japanese Edo period and the monsters are from Japanese history/literature:

It's also notable as it's an indie title from Japan, which we don't see enough of.

Of all the garbage on the PC list, Clad in Iron: Philippines 1898 actually looks interesting. At its heart it looks like it is a naval warfare game and, as such, will most likely be terrible. But it does look intriguing.

I couldn't even imagine having a legit mainstream version of FS on the go. Not talking about the watered-down mobile port versions.

I think my work-commute productivity would be savaged. As it stands I've got 30min. x 2 a day for reading & random podcasts. With FS17 in my hands, I really couldn't see myself doing much of anything else. LOL.

Oh snap, Rocket League Switch this week.

Do I double dip...

Wait a second, did none of you all mention Star Wars Battlefront II is out this week? Wow. That's truly shocking.

For me, I'm passing on Battlefront II even though it's a Dice game because I don't have enough time for it. That and the whole lootbox controversy turns me off, though I'm not against lootboxes, the whole fiasco turns me off.

Then there's the whole thing where heros like Luke and Vader take something like 60,000 credits to unlock, but were only 10,000 credits in the review copies and ... sigh, EA sucks.

Rocket League on Switch. Yepppppppppp

We don’t follow the zeitgeist here at The Week Ahead. We roll our own.

Yay more LOGistICAL!

Normally I'd try and be on top of it enough to at least snag someone to guest but it's been crazy and Battlefront is so far removed from my interests that I legit forgot about it. I ended up getting the first Battlefront because my brother-in-law was hoping to play it with me and found it to be pretty... meh? Forgettable, most definitely.

So... yeah. Completely missed out on it. I guess during the holidays we should be tapping on the higher ups' shoulders more often to see if there's anything they'd like to cover, as I imagine one of them might have chosen it as their own.

I still have my preorder tshirt from when L.A. Noire launched on PS3.
I should probably finally open the box and play that this week.

Rocket League on Switch! I got it on Steam for free with steam controller, so I don't mind double dipping at all.

Looked up Goblins Keep Coming. Literally no views on their youtube trailer. Poor indies.
As you might expect it is a tower defense game. The goblins don't look very good and it's not called Goblins Keep Cumming, so..sounds kinda boring to me.
