The Orville went Black Mirror.

Huh?

Only 3 episodes in a season?

It was scary science-fiction, but now it's becoming all too real?

.........huh?

Possible near future?

Naw, latest episode copied the plot from Cory Doctorow’s book Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, just like Black Mirror did for their season 3 opener (and Community did for their Meow Meow Beanz episode).

I kinda want to check the credits for those episodes and see if they sited the novel's Creative Commons licence. If they did, fair game.

I love Cory and his writing, but it's not like his idea was wholly original either. All writing is inspired by other writing. They've all put their own spin on it.

True, and it’s clearly based on the “democracy gone wrong” story trope, but this particularly type of social currency story is a uniquely 201X’s phenomenon which makes it doubly impressive that Doctorow was writing about it almost two decades ago, long before reddit or facebook, when “social media” in it’s current form was only a few years old and still a very niche idea.

Okay, last night's episode of The Exorcist was pitch perfect horror. It wasn't a standalone episode in any way, but I think even someone brand new to the show would have been able to identify with the characters and feel the horror. Seriously, it shook me.

And then the scenes! We are going on a helluva ride for the rest of the season. Best horror on TV right now, bar none.

Decided to finally check out Stan Against Evil after hearing Dana Gould on a podcast repping the start of the new season and insisting the series isn’t just an Evil Dead rip-off... and after watching a bit of the first season, wow- it is exactly just an Evil Dead rip-off.
Still enjoying it though. It should hold me over until the new season of Ash Vs Evil Dead in a couple months.

I couldn't resist resubscribing to Starz in order to watch season 3 of Outlander. I just can't get enough of that Bear McCreary theme song!

I really appreciate Outlander for reliably providing an easy Mother's Day gift for, like, going on four years now.

Yeah this show is the creepiest f*cking thing on TV right now. Seriously scary. AHS wishes it could be this good.

AHS would benefit from scaling back their stories a ton. I’ve kind of liked this current season, but there is some offensive and disgusting stuff that serves no purpose, and only ends up rolling eyes.

I kind of like how this was the story of a suicide cult, but they could have gotten to this point in much better ways. I will say that Trump wining really screwed their story up. It was supposed to be a horror induced what if.

But yeah, AHS still has failed to match their first season. My guess is that they over estimated how cool the whole rubber suit guy was, and decided weird sexual horror had to be included in every story, even when it doesn’t fit.

Y'all are making me want to check out The Exorcist.

A few shows I've watched recently but may not have mentioned:

The League - This is really more guy comedy than fantasy football comedy. I don't play FF at all, but I loved this show. Netflix has the full, hilarious run. Very much for fans of movies like Swingers.

Rick and Morty - I finally heard enough raves about this to check it out. Loved it. I think it's on Hulu, but many episodes are also free in the Adult Swim app or on the website (and it's not the same mix, so check both places). A lot of episodes are also hosted illicitly on YouTube. Many of them alter the graphics or pitch shift the sound (which is terrible when the voices are so key to the comedy), but many do not.

Mindhunter - I believe I mentioned that I loved season one.

Last season the first half was good, the second half was silly nonsense. This season is mostly silly nonsense.

I agree. But much of the silly nonsense has amused me this season. Having Evan Peters play David Koresh and Jim Jones is a good example. But it seems like we have to assume that the police and FBI do not exist for the story to even get this far.

Also his magic mind control powers.

That’s the thing. If they spent more time on the story it would be more clear. They are trying to show why each person was susceptible, but then it suddenly goes Project Mayhem.

I'm enjoying it a lot, just nice to have a non traditional horror set up. I've been surprised a few times.

I was turned off by the first episode, but ended up getting into it once the main mystery was revealed. But since then it seems they're just doing whatever? I feel like there's no longer a central thread.

ESPN's 30 for 30: Nature Boy

The life more than the career of Ric Flair. Probably a must watch for wrestling fans of my generation.

Regarding AHS, I like how they've downplayed the supernatural and focused on plausible real life scenarios for chills. That being said, it feels like the subplots are going in a bunch of different directions which is something I've always hated about the series.

In other news, the latest season of South Park continues to deliver biting social commentary and some epic trolling.

Finished Red Oaks. Would have liked another episode or two to round it off, but it was still good. One thing cracked me up.

Spoiler:

Skye's totally dating her father! Electra Complex FTL! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Supergirl:

Kudos for casting clones of Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh as the younger Kara and Alex and kudos for the DCW for doing an homage to Life Is Strange.

So, what did everyone think about the AHS finale?

Spoiler:

I liked the twist with Ally outsmarting Kai and how she's carrying on the SCUM tradition, though it was still unclear to me how she reconciles being a part of that group and being mom to a boy.

Also, they missed some really good opportunities to shift into true horror mode. What if the FBI had closed in too late and the Night of 100 Tates took place? Or what if the final scene was Ally killing Ozzy in a way that made it look like an accident, muttering something about how she needs to sacrifice her love for the cause of killing all men? Yes, I know it's dark but I liked the original AHS season ending where everyone died and there was no happy ending.

How to Get Away with Murder was intense. That last scene, oh boy. I also thought they did a good job stringing us along on who might have killed somebody.

Fans of Alicia Witt ought to be checking out The Exorcist. Wish I could say more.

I needed another reason to start watching this show. Now you've done it.

Future Man is very funny and vulgar if you like that sort of thing. Lots of easter eggs from movies and video games.

I keep debating a sub to Hulu...you aren't making it any easier Baron

I just watched that for the first time tonight after Hulu begging me to return for a free month. Two episodes in and it's really growing on me.

As a fan of The Last Starfighter, I am looking forward to watching Future Man. Glad to hear early reviews are positive.

Heh, that movie gets a mention very early on.
