Now Recruiting! Be a Part of the Extra Life 2017 Team for Charity!

If anyone does need some support with Extra Life for a couple hours on the day GMT late evening just holler. (Any kind of co-op on the PS4).

Myself, I'm thinking about giving the 24 hour Stand up to Cancer: Game on marathon a go.

Fundraising pack received, support telephone chat done, giving page registered. Just got to pick a date and get on with it.

Most friends are hardcore musicians rather than gamers and left the hobby behind years ago. So trying to think of something challenging that lapsed and non gaming friends and family will recognise. All the remasters / remakes on the PS4 might help with this.

Anyhow, sorry - Won't detail here, but will probably make a thread to bounce ideas soon. Ta.

Up for helping on 4 Nov if I can.

I'd be happy to try help you out with playing if that's ok! I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the full 24 hours, but with enough notice can probably commit quite a bit to playing!

Thanks! I'll stick up a thread soon.

Sounds awful I know but am going to be fickle about my gamer fundraising this year.

Great cause Cancer Research obviously but after the initial sign up and quick chat it's all been a bit fuzzy organisation wise. I asked if I should stick to a date or window, I was told anytime was fine. Thought I leave it until November, a better time to fit it in. However yesterday I had an email thanking me for my fundraising efforts in a way that sounded like it was all done and dusted and fundraising window closed. Not sure if I've missed it or not, odd, I think I'll just donate some cash to Cancer Research UK and that'll do.

As it turns out have also been invited to take part in a 24 hr board game-a-thon by the large local gaming group. In aid of MIND, UK mental health charity, so one close to home for me at the moment. Plus a good way to get to know a group better that are helping in my healthier head efforts. I'll update in a fresh thread when it's all concrete.

None of that totally relevant to this thread, I'd started so I'll finish kind of thing... but still happy to play along with Extra Life for as long as I'm able next week, if anyone needs a +1 on PS4.

We just broke $3,500 and it isn't even go-day yet.

Wild.

Wooot! That’s awesome!

Hey folks! Just wanted to plug the Extra Life team some buddies and I put together: https://www.extra-life.org/team/brobots

Since this is our first time streaming as a team, we gave ourselves a conservative $1,000 goal, which we already broke! So, we've doubled our goal to $2,000.

Ed, I see your Extra Life page. Eleima, do you have one up yet? I'd like to also promote your streams and pages!

Yes, I do! I need to customize it a bit, add my schedule (working on it, but it's going to be a busy week at work, not to mention attending the Paris Games Week tomorrow). Anyhow, I'm right this way.
Kudos on reaching your goal already, Doogie!!!

I'll get on slack tonight for this, but I'm unfortunately a maybe at the moment, as on Sunday my boiler broke down (it's very old, and the part needed is no longer around, so I need a new one), and I've been having electrical problems in the house (lights flickering), so I won't know until probably Friday if I need any work done to the house this Saturday/Sunday when it rains it pours! I'll still be able to take part in some capacity though! But, hopefully I'll be able to fully commit.

I'm going to try doing a 24 hour Overwatch stream with a few friends. That'll be interesting.

I made the decision a bit late (meaning mid-October) to go ahead and do a 24 hour stream for Extra Life as well.

I put a schedule up on my page, but I kept it flexible enough that I'm not stuck doing just one or two games the whole time. I figure that if I get stuck in a rather frustrating portion of the game or if it just isn't that entertaining, I can switch to something different. We'll see how it goes

How late is too late to participate?
I don't know if I can commit to a 24-hour stream or running my own fundraising, but I would like to be available as a ready player in other people's games, moderate or chat with twitch channels if needed, and twiddle autohosting on the gwj twitch account for folks interested, etc. I'm also happy to sit in chat with you if you're playing on twitch voice if you would like some company as well. These sessions can get long and lonely sometimes!

I am on PC for:
Overwatch
Destiny 2
Diablo III
PUBG
Rocket League
Misc steam games

Switch:
Mariokart
Splatoon 2

Counting employer matches and promised-but-not-yet-hit donations (I told folks to hold off so we don't start the stream north of our goal already), we're over $5,000. This is gonna be wild.

During the overnight I will probably be rolling out absolutely whatever random junk I can to keep us awake, and if things get really slow (aka, people start falling asleep) I'll probably hop on Slack and try to hunt up folks for some multiplayer games. Probably PUBG, it's my most reliable option.

Amoebic - I'll be updating a google doc schedule like the one we had last year this (European) evening when I get home. You and any other unaffiliated GWJ folks are welcome to post your schedules and join in so we have some camaraderie and can help each other through quieter hours. Full 24 hour support not required!

Link coming soon.

Out of curiosity, how do I actually get on the slack? It says I need a URL. I found a thread about it and pinged an email but nothing yet.

If there isn't an invite link, PM McIrish.

Here's my projected schedule, subject to change, depending on how things go. Maybe there'll be a GWJ TF2 game or L4D I can jump in at some point.

  • 00:30 – 02:30 - Doki Doki Literature Club

  • 7:00am – 9:00am - The Talos Principle

There's the link if you want to add your schedule to the document. I pushed my start time to the right in order to be awake for the League of Legends finals, but I'll likely pop in to your chat Eleima. Gotta support Team EU!

Okay, I think I've got my schedule pretty much "set" (6:00am - 6:00am GOOOOO):

The games I listed are just a general idea, but I'm in no way dead set on anything except for that fighting games block--I'm trying to coordinate that section with some of the Goodjers I regularly play with. Basically saying I'm flexible enough with the schedule that I'm available to play anything if someone needs a boost.

Squee, I tried editing that spreadsheet but it looked like I only have view access. I did end up sending a request to you for editing access so if you get a notification for it, it was me

Man, you all are really making me wish I would have gotten my butt in gear and gotten ready to do this. Next year I'm going to have to participate for sure!

I'm over here at Twitch streaming my favorite Trek game! It's my birthday, and I'm playing it for Extra Life. My Extra Life Page .

I have quite a few of you auto-hosted at this point, and will try to catch those I'm missing. First year actually being able to STREAM anything! It's exciting to be a part of it. Looking forward to seeing your streams as much as possible.

I just uh
reactivated my Extra Life account now so I will be doing some game playing and hollering tomorrow on the internet. I will hash out a schedule sometime between now and tomorrow.
Sorry my life is a mess.

***hugs** * Take care of yourself first and foremost.

I will have a full report later but just finished my 25 hours. Very different feel to it this year. Played far fewer games but it also felt more leisurely despite the sleep deprivation.

I skipped over the sleep deprivation. I just couldn't, so I spread it over Saturday and Sunday. I hit my 24 hour goal, and donation-wise, I met and slightly exceeded my 150$ goal. Thanks exclusively to goodjers, and a huge thank you to those who dropped by to support me (Pyxistyx was phenomenal, she was there almost the entire time, I owe her a drink and a hug! But also Wink, Yoyoson, Squee, Doogiemac, IUMogg... Anyhow, for a first time, I'm pretty pleased, although I have to say I'm all streamed out! I don't if I'll be able to participate in 2018 (depending on whether or not I have the kids that weekend), but it was fun! I also played fewer games then I'd planned, but that wasn't a bad thing. I played through Perception and Batman - the Telltale game to completion, I also played SUPERHOT, Ladykiller in a bind, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (got my PC struggling a bit), Crypt of the NecroDancer, 1984 game Alley Cat...

i mean mostly I just made bad puns, but you're welcome

Congrats on getting through it!

True, but I **love** bad puns. You’re the best.

So this is the first year I did Extra Life without streaming. Given my living situation there's no way I could have streamed without being disturbed or disturbing others, so I was gonna give up altogether. However, I then realized using the 24 hours to record footage for my YouTube channel was a perfect excuse, as I could get a ton of stuff out of the way in one go.

Turns out not as much as I expected, but that's also because I wasn't adhering to a schedule. I estimate I played somewhere between 7-8 hours total of Super Mario Odyssey before anything else, which... it made it feel like a relaxing Saturday without also giving me guilt for "wasting" most of the day on video games. A great way to start the marathon. After that I moved on to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, where I got my first dose of delightfully revisiting games from this year. Another one where I played for almost 4 hours. I had a specific end-point in mind, but decided to go on a bit longer because I was having a good time. Usually I didn't break schedule in Extra Life until well into the second-half of things, and usually because I was Raiding with others in Destiny. Which was also played, but the final highlights (with the assistance of coffee, first time relying on the concoction of evil to stay awake the whole time) were nearly playing through Metroid: Zero Mission in a single sitting (only stopping because the WiiU gamepad battery ran low) and four hours of a new save in Breath of the Wild.

It's both Hellblade and Breath of the Wild that felt the most rewarding to return to. I normally try and revisit games anyway when I'm thinking of that year's top ten, but with Hellblade I was able to experiment with mechanics I hadn't learned during my first playthrough that revealed a bit more depth to the game than I originally was aware of. In addition, getting to revisit Senua's story had me realizing just how great of a character she is and how much I hope she is remembered when people bring up best (female) characters in games. Breath of the Wild, in the meantime, allowed me to realize something about how the Grand Plateau does tutorials, and also help me realize one of the reasons it grabs me so much that I don't really find other open world games enticing anymore.

The whole thing was much more laid back, and at one point I had about 40 minutes before I was going to meet with friends online for Destiny 2, meaning I had enough time for dinner but not enough to record new footage. So I hunkered down next to my mom as she watched TV and just played my 3DS. I wasn't recording footage, but I was still gaming and I felt like I was in good company.

I don't know if I'll stream in the future now because I was never really good at it and never had an audience. I liked being a part of the community but I was never really good at leading anyone. I have zero charisma, don't know how to get ducks in a row, and just overall am too unreliable and flakey a person. This year was probably the most fun I've ever had doing Extra Life, and it has reinvigorated my desire to keep doing it year after year despite making the least amount in donations than ever.

In that regard, I look forward to joining the GWJ team next year, but I feel more confident than ever in my decision to step down as leader. What I will try and do better next year is clear time out so I can make front-page posts for you guys whenever you need, as well as nag Certis about shout-outs on the Podcast (when I was running things I felt like I would be burdening and over-stepping my bounds, but if someone else is running I have no problem being the messenger ).

I hope everyone else had a great time, and while I don't think I ever did a good job running this thing, at least my insistence on making a thread every year has resulted in a few regulars and folks that at least tried it once.

We killed it this year. With employer matching I think we're going to make a real run at $7,000, or double last year's goal. Our guests were awesome (and three in particular put up with some really disastrous production issues when patching their 360 into our setup) and we played through a bunch of really fun multiplayer stuff.

63rd out of 46,000 ain't bad. Already planning for next year.

Question: do we have a team for the 2018 event?
