I decided to just put a John Oliver clip in this thread and change the name and scope rather than start a separate thread for Oliver's stuff.
So just put any video stuff in here; Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Seth Green, etc.
She's not saying stay home and eat cake. She's saying if you are feeling so hopeless and powerless that all you can do is stay home and eat cake, you are not alone in that feeling.
That is not the text, but it is the subtext.
Here's what I posted on FB, along with the following link:
Yes, I laughed a bit at "sheetcaking", but the attitude of "just ignore them and maybe they'll go away" made me sick to my stomach, and it should make all of us feel rather queasy.
Ignoring fascists doesn't take power away from them, it gives power to them. They're not out there "to get attention", they're out there to demonstrate their power.
And when nobody stands up against them? When nobody is there jeering and reminding them and other onlookers that their attitudes are not acceptable? They very much feel powerful.

I saw it as a humorous bit. It was funny to watch the rage at the current administration while she angrily ate her feelings away. At no point did I take it as literal advice for the nation to follow. The feeling to indulge in a vice to drown your frustration away is relatable but not advisable.
I can enjoy the humor of 30 Rock or Kimmy Schmidt but never took it as life advice.

But the actual text is using marginalized people as the butt of a joke...
Edit: an article on the massive amounts of privilege involved in this joke...
Side note: I feel like Jon Stewart made a blood oath to never again wear a suit after his stint on The Daily Show ended.
Not in least satirical (it's actually quite real). Quite not safe for work, but even less safe for work if you work for Trump.
...did I actually just rap?
It's supposed to be funny. It also makes me cry.
CNN: Where we will bring on a number of Banana Truthers to defend the apple as banana position.
I'm surprised we don't see Some News on here. Let's fix that!
This one on Antifa vs Nazis is particularly great:
Nice. I watched that first one this weekend and thought he absolutely nailed it. It crossed my mind to post here, but I must have got distracted. Glad you did!
Is... is that real?
