Let's Plays and Play throughs you are enjoying

I've thought about this as a potential topic for a while and these videos made me fire it up.

This first one seems to have a blank thumbnail at the moment. It's a let's play of ECHO entitled: Running was a mistake.

The amazing thing about this form of entertainment is that you don't always know what subject or style of game is going to get you excited next. If you'd have told me a week or so ago that I'd be loving play throughs of a submarine combat game I may not have believed you.

I'm probably going to pick up both these games in the fullness of time.

Yeah that first video's totally borked for me here

...this version should be ok?

I'm a big fan of eurogamer's let's play stuff. If you don't mind being 100% spoilt on the game, Aoife and Johnny's run through the first two episodes of Life is Strange : Before the Storm are AMAZING.

Aoife has my priorities when it comes to Chloe and Rachel

Spoiler:

JUST KISS ALREADY!!

You too will believe a beardy tattoo'd man will weep openly on camera!

Also their Late to the Party stuff is often hilarious too.

ALSO... another favourite are the many runs through Hitman by a related channel, the outside Xbox channel. They are a witty bunch!

I've liked quite a few, like kurtjmac's "Farlands or Bust" series in which he plays an old beta version of Minecraft in which there was a hypothetical distance from spawn at which the game world's physics start breaking down. This region was dubbed "the Farlands". Kurtjamac has used this to raise money for charities, and has been doing this series for years.

I also really like how ManyATrueNerd plays Fallout. He's completed each of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas with killing the minimal number of entities (aiming for zero), and alternatively killing everything. He's played with extreme, self-imposed survival mode, in which he doesn't use any healing, whether by stimpack or food or water. He can be kinda chatty but I like it. Here's the "Fallout Vault" playlist.

Yes. That's the one. Thanks.

I watch Keith Ballards' Let's play channel a lot. He doesn't use foul language, seems fairly level headed (no rage quitting, etc.) and He does all the games I want to play but never find the time or am not good enough to play like

Dark Souls 3

Yakuza 0

and

Nioh

That Hitman video is great. I've never really caught the Hitman bug but I'm starting to see the appeal.

I may be in for the Fallout 3 one health bar play through. Having played that game I have no idea how that is even remotely possible.

I'm always looking for good, level headed play throughs. Keith Ballard may be my man. I often watch play throughs of games that would frustrate me too much to actually play so Nioh could be a good candidate.

I'm totally in the camp of folks with too little time and money to buy and play very many games. I watched the entirety of the campaign of Dying Light on YouTube, played by someone going by "theRadBrad". He made a point to not talk over the dialogue, seemed generally affable, and didn't ham it up for the stream.

I still might like to play that game but it was pretty intense just watching it.

Kole Ross (of Watch out for fireballs fame) streams his run through a lot of current/older horror games under the 'hex crank' title. Worth watching if you like people who play horror games and don't ham it up for youtube. It's his twitch streams though, so there's a lot of speaking 'offscreen' to an invisible audience if you're watching the recorder youtube versions.

Yeah, I'm a fan. My favorite let's play of his by far is The Witness which I just watched a few weeks ago.

If you like Cold Water playthroughs then you should definitely check out Jive Turkey.

He was a sonarman (I believe) on US fast attack subs during the Cold War so he manages to blend a bit of era realism in his playthroughs with some interesting naval tales from back in the day.

Brilliant. Thanks I will.

Speaking of games that would annoy me too much to play.

I'll add that Witness play through to the list.

Does Freeman's Mind count as a let's play?

Probably not.

The greatest let's play of Dark Souls I've ever seen is Kay Plays Dark Souls. She starts the series having barely ever touched a gamepad before. Then she proceeds to methodically work her way through the entire game, picking apart a huge chunk of the game's systems, secrets, and challenges.

It's a joy to watch. Never let it be said that Dark Souls doesn't explain anything. You just have to pay close attention, which Kay excels at.

The exact opposite of Kay Plays Dark Souls is Jeff Green's playthrough of Dark Souls. To be fair to Jeff, his videos are an archive of a livestream, rather than pre-recorded and edited videos, but even so: Jeff is impatient and rash and takes no time to investigate anything at all. And yet, he manages to bludgeon his way through the game anyway, with a hefty dose of direction from his live viewers.

It's maddening and infuriating and glorious.

I like the Geek Remix channel. Two women doing Let's Play's with good conversation about the game during it.

Party mode from Kinda Funny. Will Jason get his act together in time?

Greg lone wolf's it (Haoooooooooooo!)

Have to say, Jive Turkey is amazing. He sounds like he's commanding the ship rather than playing (an easy trick but it works.) I've been watching him a lot. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Keith Ballard - a Let's Play person I like is playing Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker....I had forgotten how utterly charming and beautiful this game is. I think I would triple dip if they put this out on the Switch.

I never got to play winemaker (curse you spell checker) Wind Waker.

*Adds it to the list*

If you like Dark Souls, then my #1 recommendation is EpicNameBro's (don't worry, he's 1000000x less douchey than the name sounds) - From the Dark - playthrough of DS1. A super-deep dive into gameplay, history, design, and lore. It's soooo good!

Watching this made me buy the game - and I loved it!

Thanks. I'll give it a go. Yes the name is a tad off putting.

if I recall, he wrote the official strategy guides for the first two dark souls games, so he definitely knows his stuff.

Yes, the name is super off putting, but not at all representative of him or his approach. He is very knowledgeable and a great watch if you want to see someone that is both good at the game and well versed in the lore. It's rare to have both in one streamer.

In other Dark Souls Let's Play recommendations, this one is great:

I am awful at figuring out the story and lore of the game all on my own, so watching her do it with relative ease is pretty amazing.

My lady and I are both fans of Prepare To Try on IGN. The 3 hosts are fun to watch and who doesn't love a good Dark Souls playthrough?

A couple seasons for you to enjoy and some genuine human elation when defeating a difficult boss. I cheered at the end of season 1.

Finchy!

If you are into strategy or simulator games, Quill18 is a good follow. He also has the occasional rpg or other genre

There’s a lot of videos so not sure which exactly to recommend.

I also enjoy a lot of Nookrium. He plays a lot of roguelike and simulators too, but usually just a single episode about each and I’ve usually never of them.

Seconded.
I dont really watch playthroughs in general on youtube. But somehow stubled into Kays Dark/Demon Souls videos. So good.
Seeing her break the language code in Fez in the first hour was also quite interesting. The playthrough itself didn't go anywhere however.

I enjoyed Kay’s Dark Souls run. I was sad she stopped adding content to her channel last year.

I thoroughly enjoyed DaveControl's playthroughs of all the Dark Souls games. Not only is he entertaining to watch, he also likes to go deeper into the lore and will devote a part of most episodes to it.

I have been watching this Let's Play and it has been fun. Worth watching (at least to part 5 which is where I am at)

Dark Souls: Prepare to Try - Episode 1, The Northern Undead Asylum

Ooooh nice.

Arise!

maybe we have a newer thread about lets play videos but this is what google found

right now I am enjoying Mad Matt Lugos play the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 really has become the game it was teased as years ago. Wow.

We already have Gaming Trailers and Gaming Videos threads that are pretty active. The Gaming Videos thread often gets trailers posted to it anyway. The Gaming Trailers thread often gets non-trailer videos posted to it. Maybe we should just consolidate down to one videos thread?

Up to the powers that be.

since this was about let's play videos and we had a thread for that format I tossed it here but whatever folks want.
