Super Mario Odyssey - Catch All

Pages

Hot Take: The only other GoTY contender that could beat Super Mario Odyssey is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Do any other GoTY contenders have a jazzy music video? No?

Then let's talk all about the gaming goodness that will be Super Mario Odyssey!

Nintendo have had a really good year with Zelda BOTW getting perfect marks everywhere & Super Mario Odyssey has a good chance of following that.

Stoked that I've got the Pro Controller in time for this, Mario's toolset & movement mechanics look their absolute best yet & I'm sure there will be loads of little inventive ideas with the hat mechanic & it's ability to control characters, enemies etc also with its use for platforming.

Mainline Zelda and Mario in the same year is nuts. Can't wait for this.

I have my preorder in on Amazon, I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah, I'll end up getting this. I wasn't hot on it when I got a Switch, but I'm starting to realize I need a Mario game on the system asap. I loved 3D world but didn't dig the Galaxy, so I'm curious if they can actually top 3D World (I'll be really surprised).

Yup. Amazon preorder in, as long as they don't screw it up.

Super excited for this one! It's the first game in a while I've actually stopped looking at previews because I'd rather be surprised by the rest of it.

Regarding that 10/10 score, it seems that Edge has only awarded a 10/10 19 times since its first publication in 1993. It does seem like a good sign, but there's a reason to be mildly sceptical at least.

Well, according to Amazon, the release date of Odyssey coincides with the day I might get the SNES Classic. As I've never properly played through Mario World, I wonder which of these two games will grab my attention more.

Same.

As I said in the Switch thread I played the demo a couple times at Target over the weekend. It felt very good and I'm even more hyped now after that.

This will be the first Mario game I've played since 3 on the NES and I'm pretty excited for it. Mario isn't really the draw for me though - it looks really innovative and fun (which do not always go together).

My preorder is in. Was pretty set on getting it, but the 20% off through Amazon and release day delivery made it a done deal. I've only ever done side-scrolling Mario games, so this'll be something totally new for me.

I got that Edge issue with the "world exclusive" early review of Odyssey fora flight back home yesterday. For the first time in ages, I bought a gaming magazine about contemporary games and, honestly, I can't say that it was particularly enlightening or well written.

What I got out of it is that playing each captured enemy/thing feels different and there's something going on with the joycons, but - apart from that - it almost reads like any review of any 3D Mario. Supposedly, it's similar to Mario 64 and Sunshine in some aspects... They make it sound as if that's a good thing.

Depends on how you feel about Mario 64, really. M64 is an open world Mario, basically. The 3D series has 3D movement and platforming, like M64, but is structured more like a 2D Mario title in that you pick a level and play that level, which is unconnected to other levels except by theme and placement.

M64 has you running all over the place within a number of open worlds. You're free to wander and do what you want within each world. It's less segmented than other Mario's in that way.

Galaxy is more in line with 3D World/Land than M64. So, it's exciting they're going back to the M64 well.

The family is waiting for that game since it was announced.

Pre-Ordered was done like 2-3 months ago.

Switch is the main gaming console in the house atm.

Cappy cap is purchased.

Just missing the amiibos...

Wow, it's been a while since so much got out of our pockets, and we are gaming all together. We just like it.

I rather enjoyed stumbling on a hidden star when I was on the way to a different one in 64.

From playing the demo it seems there are moon parts everywhere but it doesn't end the level when you find one. Very nice.

As someone who did 120 stars on Mario 64 twice (N64 and DS), and beat it a couple more times, sounds great.

I have never gotten more than 2-3 hours into any Mario 3d game, and yet I'm pretty excited for Odyssey.

Sounds pretty great to me!

Famitsu: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) – 10/10/9/10 [39/40]

But not the digital version. Extra sad because Amazon UK did drop the digital preorder price to match physical. Normally, I'd be happy to get the physical copy, but I'm traveling on release day, so I need to go digital.

I didn't know they were selling Switch game codes through Amazon. Do you get any sort of Prime discount for going that route?

No, but I'm starting to go that route anyway for some games just for points.

Got it. Well, I don't do the points thing, so I'll probably just stick with the eshop so Nintendo gets the biggest cut possible versus Amazon taking a cut.

That's literally what my post was complaining about.

Good point about the points though. I'll probably do that too.

Oh, I was talking about the prime 10% off thing for pre-orders on physical. I honestly haven't been paying attention to how Amazon Prime has been discounting new titles and 20% off seemed like a special case. Are they doing 20% off on all physical pre-orders now?

I'm salivating at the idea someone convinced Amazon UK to discount digital purchases. That'd be great to see at Amazon US. I mean, if GTG discounts PC games all the time and still turns a tidy profit, well ...

They still do prime discount for some special editions. Fire Emblem Warriors had it recently for this Friday's release.

A lot of the major releases get the discount. I'm getting Destiny 2 PC for 20% off. But yeah, I'd vastly prefer if they applied it to the digital versions. It's especially silly for PC games, where it's literally a box with a code in it.

I'm very excited for the return of genuine 3D Mario. I hadn't paid much attention to gaming in high school but when my roommate during my first year of college brought a N64 I ended up playing Mario 64 whenever he wasn't around (and instead of doing homework most of the time). I never played Sunshine much but I still have great memories of getting super absorbed by Mario 64 and I think Odyssey will be a joy to play.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here but the implication that the Galaxy and 3D World / Land games aren't "genuine" really rubs me the wrong way

Ah, and I didn't mean to slight them. In fact, I enjoy those games a lot. I meant more that I am excited that Odyssey is recalling 64 for me and the memories I had of playing it. "Genuine" was the wrong word choice.
