DC Catch-All [Spoiler Zone]

Finally saw it with my wife last night.

Much better movie for DC than the recent non-Nolan stuff. Leagues better even Casting was pretty great all around, except that the villains just seemed like cardboard stand ins to work around.

However, it's not up there with my favorite superhero movies. CG jumps WW did just kept pulling me out of the movie because they were so non-fluid compared to what we've gotten used to. The plot was OK, but predictable. The island stuff was great, but the Europe stuff fell back to standard superhero fare.

B+ for me. Glad it's doing well, but after all the hype, I really expected...more. Not sure what more, just more.

Hopefully, DC will learn what worked here and build on it going forward.

So I just saw Wonder Woman myself. For reference, I've never actually watched Man of Steel, Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad. I'm aware of them and their broad plots (because I'm on the internet) but that's about it.

Wonder Woman seemed fine. Nothing spectacular but a solid action movie. She's determined, the mentor dies, she's called into the outside world. All pretty standard Campbell stuff with the standard last thirty minute CGI slug-fest that I'm hoping movies are moving away from now. It had some comedy, which was nice.

I felt the power chord was out of place with the rest of the movie, both because of the rest of the audio and because of the time period it took place in. I don't really get why Ares had lightning powers. Or why he even showed up, other than the requirement for that aforementioned thirty minute CGI fight scene.

I dunno, maybe my standards were too high, not having seen the other DC universe movies? It certainly didn't interest me as much as Dark Knight, though it was better than some superhero movies I've seen.

A series of bad Walmart commercials and a bit of a trailer.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Funny Commercials + Trailer (2017) Batman Superman Superhero Movie HD

I guess I should mention that, in preparation for Justice League, we watched Batman v Superman. Well, what to say about it. Ben Affleck was not a bad Batman, but he was certainly in a bad Batman movie. Diana Prince/Wonder Woman was far and away the best part of that 3 hours. In fact, I'd like to believe the dour, turgid 2.5 hours preceding WW's costumed appearance was a deliberate criticism of masculinity and machismo, before a woman has finally had enough with the men and gets sh*t done.

I doubt it though. But Batman and Superman were seriously stupid in that movie. So many times during their fistfight we shouted—because Batman wasn't—"Luthor has your mom!" "Luthor's got your mom, gotta help me!" "It's Luthor, we gotta get him!"

^^ This is amazing though, and I just wish the film had earned it.

Whereas I think the scene where Batman takes down the dudes holding Martha is the best part of the movie (with Wonder Woman being a close second).

For me, the best part of the movie is WW going up against Doomsday the first time, getting knocked back, and moving forward with a little smile that, to me, said "finally, this is going to be fun."

I feel sorry for Flash knowing that inevitably he's going to bork the timeline.

What the fork is happening in that trailer? Who are those wasp robot people that fly around everywhere? Is there any connection to a villain from the previous movies?

Lord knows.

Apparently they're Darkseid's minions or something-- there was a nod to them in Batman v Superman, with little or no explanation (they're existence in either of these movies is entirely fan service and are likely going to make for another really sh*t story. Which is the overall problem I have with the DCEU-- WB wants to dive headlong into their biggest properties without giving audiences time to even accept the circumstances surrounding these live-action characters.

Cool action set-pieces, though. I never thought I'd say it, but Aquaman actually looks like the (second) coolest character in this-- mostly due to Jason Momoa's carefree surfer attitude, which feels like the complete opposite of the way the character's been portrayed in the past. Cyborg seems undeserving of a role this big/important just yet (really needs a better introduction to the general audience), and the Flash just looks... f*cking dumb.

Also, I really want Superman to return with a bushy mustache instead of a mullet like he did in the comics, but apparently they're going to comp Cavill's 'stache out.

Did he die in BvS? I honestly don't remember.

"Yes."

They're called Parademons. As mentioned above they're basically Darkseid's shock troops, so no connection to the previous villains aside from the fact that Luthor made a couple cryptic references to Darkseid in BvS.
They show up pretty frequently in the comics and various DC animated titles, but other than Batman's weird dream sequence in BvS they haven't been properly introduced yet in the cinematic universe. Somebody will probably spew a bunch of exposition about them at some point in Justice League.

Actually they've decided it will be easier to just add mustaches to everyone else instead.

Honestly not the worst idea DC could have...

If Marvel can have an alternate universe of zombies, then DC can have an alternate universe of mustaches.

Didn't Avengers do the same thing? We never had seen those aliens and I don't think we ever saw them again.

Yeah, but Loki was the actual villain of Avengers, someone we knew and who had a history with at least one member of the team. The aliens, pointless as they were, were a vague threat multiplier for good fight scenes. And even then all of them dying when the wifi signal was killed was probably the most bullsh*t part of the movie.

Meanwhile, unless Justice League is going to make Ares, Lex Luthor, Doomsday/Zod or the Joker the villain in charge of the parademons I don't think we're going to get that in there. There's going to be at least, what, half an hour of introducing Darkseid and his parademons, and maybe (probably) Apokolips. I hope they're smart enough to ignore Granny Goodness and the rest.

The baddie is "Seriously? That guy who only died in the cartoons?" Steppenwolf, so I've fixed that for you. Grannie Goodness would have been wonderful.

Wow. They went with the least interesting of the tertiary Apokolips characters. I figured the villain would at least be Darkseid with some side character(s).

Darkseid is basically DC's Thanos so I guess they gotta save him for the third Justice League film so they can cash in on that sweet MCU formula.

I can't wait for Justice League 2: Age of Braniac!

As someone who has no idea what any of you are talking about, it might be instructive to compare our reactions after seeing the movie.

Save yourself the bother and just watch the Batman and Superman cartoons from the 90s.

Better actors and story than anything DC has ever put on the big screen.

They even killed a person on Superman. It was amazing. Not the trash from the last couple of films.

I thought Wonder Woman was better than trash.

That's a good point about Loki.
I think for Justice League the villain is Steppenwolf? (Had to google the name.) I think we only briefly see him in BvS.

All I know about Steppenwolf is that he gets your motor running.

Magic Carpets have motors?
