The Orville Catch All - Beware: Spoilers!

Caught up. Episode 4 was by far the best yet.

I still don’t know if it’s more homage or just blatant rip-off though. Minus the dick jokes of course.

BOOM, Female Doggo!

My take on the show is it's Star Trek if Trek got over itself.

my favorite was:

Spoiler:

"Where are your friends?" "Last I saw them one was banging your mom and the other was giving him a high five."

I think as much as I love the idea of the prime directive, this shows what Star Trek would be like without it.
There isn't an added layer of tension because of the implications of corrupting a less advanced society. So the topics that don't require it, don't have it. And yet there is similar levels of heightened tension when there needs to be because it is really tough to maintain broad and diverse alliances with whole planets let alone races on a singular planet.
The difference is that the characters in Orville can react how they would naturally rather than according to an indoctrinated interplanetary bill of rights. It doesn't hit you over the head with philosophical nuance.
I too thought the subject matter was pretty bold in the third and even in the fourth episode somewhat. And I love the show more for it.

Spoiler:

That 'BOOM Female Doggo' came across as so natural, it kinda struck me. While it was supposed to be funny, it also came across like quite realistic. Really liking this show lots

So we are allowed spoilers, but noticed ppl using tags. All good

Hahaha.. my bad.

I agree with you here. It seems like Trek always has an overly idealized way of how people interact in the workplace and how adversaries aren't constantly kicking around the Idiot Ball.

Another example: The armed alien opening up on Alara the moment she moved.

She does have a very threatening presence. I can totally understand.

no, not really.

Well, that was very Trek-like. I guess since it was Jonathan Frakes at the helm, that's not very surprising.

I almost want to say Charlise was underutilized unless (and I am guessing they will) they use her as

Spoiler:

a recurring villain a la "Q".

It was a good episode. But I have to admit I was a little hyped that it would be awesome.

Spoiler:

Mercer put the teleportation device in his desk... I thought that was curious. Although it begs the question whether destroying the wormhole blinked the device out of existence. Also, the cyborg has been in contact with the future technology. Is any of that going to linger post wormhole destruction?

Hopefully we'll find out. I kind of love that we're in an alternate timeline just five episodes in. So fun.

Sorry, I forgot we're good on spoilers here.

I watched this on the off chance that it would be okay enough to hold me over until the new Trek show finishes and I can binge it all in one month.

I think I might like this better! I had no idea it would be a serious show with light humor. I just assumed 'Family guy in space'.

My one complaint? We get it Ed and Kelly were married. Can we stop bringing it up?

One other thing I noticed in the episode that was kind of casually thrown out there is that the Orville has traveller-like speed. They said the quantum drive reaches speeds of 10 light years an hour. That is pretty wow inducing.
edit: and idiot me just realized it must be called the Orville after Orville Wright. (hence the Wright flyer or glider on Mercer's desk)

That last episode was fun. Still pseudo-copying Trek, but it’s charming. I’m waiting for the inevitable guest stars: The Orville meets the flagship; the darling of the fleet; the USS Endeavor captained by Patrick Stewart!

Also it was a lot like S5E9, guest starring Matt "Max Headroom" Frewer. Combined with Firefly E3 (no need to specify season number with Firefly).

I am enjoying this show. It's a lot less jokey than I thought it was going to be at the outset.

You could do it just to rub a bit of salt in there.

I thought I was rubbing a bit of salt there!

The way everybody pronounced "consortium" in the last episode drove me insane.

Really enjoying this. I am surprised by the topics it is hitting right out of the gate. When the cameo for Drule (sp?) popped in I too was very taken aback. Not surprised though, both of the big name cameos were co-stars with McFarlane in a very middling but fun movie.

Still loving this show. Of COURSE they're watching TV on the view screen on long flights.

Last night I had a choice between watching E5 of this and the Discovery pilot. At this point, I doubt I'll even give Discovery a shot, unless CBS removes the paywall.

There is a lot of pushback to CBS, to quote a friend of mine whose view i share: I'm most afraid that CBS will choose to misinterpret the lack of pickup as "people aren't interested in trek" instead of "people aren't interested in our half-donkey'd streaming service" and put trek into the "If we can;t make money off this no one will" licence lock-box.

While not a great show it is still very enjoyable with a lot of potential. I'm having fun watching this, unlike the new Star Trek where I want to kill someone when watching an episode.

I think that's the biggest thing for me; Orville is a pleasant show to watch. I would like to hang out with these people, for the most part, and have a beer with them. The world they inhabit seems like a nice place, generally.

That's something that I got (to varying degrees) from all the previous Star Trek shows. Sure, bad things happened but generally speaking people were trying to do the right thing. I rarely got that from the movies (Start Trek IV, I love you) and didn't get from the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery at all.

ST:D seems like it's going for more of an Expanse or Battlestar Galactica (remake) vibe. Which is fine, but not what I want out of Star Trek.

This would be perfect! It is obvious that McFarlane is leveraging his celebrity friends to help get the show off of the ground. My family and I are really enjoying it. Hell, I hope we see the likes of Mila Kunis, Seth Green, and Patrick Warburton. Hell, an appearance of Michael Dorn may not be out of the question.

Edit: Holy sh*t, I just found out that the actor (Chad L. Coleman) that plays Klyden (Bortus's spouse) is the same guy who plays Fred Johnson on the Expanse.

Cutty!

Watching episode 4 now. It is quite enjoyable. I hope it gets a full season.

One thing I read on Facebook (so take it with a grain of salt) - Nelson only matters if you are a Nelson family so for most of us it doesn't mean a lot however they do keep track of the stats on web viewing so if you watch on-line they will be able to track numbers.

So if you are enjoying the show perhaps watch on-line so the folks at Fox will know.

I believe that it has been picked up for a full season.

My god.

Another good episode. Making the Krill religious vampires was a nice touch. The only strange part ot me is the current Union stance towards the Krill - clearly, they are already at war, and the Union seems reluctant to admit that. Also, I suspect that Malloy telling the Krill kids where Earth was is going to have some consequences down the line.

Yeah, I was unclear about that too. I sort of felt that it would probably be pretty obvious that humans came from Earth since it seems like the conflict is not new. But nothing like that has ever been explicitly stated in the show so who knows where that will lead.

I was also leaning towards perhaps that one kid that was curious enough to find Earth in the telescope might be the first emissary to Earth. We will see how hopeful the show ends up being. It seems to be following a pattern of diving head first into big issues but not dwelling on them. This issue was clearly a statement to religious fundamentalism that those who are not like you that you dehumanize do in fact have souls. That the way to have a more pure soul is to apply morals over time. Let them guide you through the sequence of events and determine that morality at the end rather than stop short at the first wrong whether it is picking a nose or stabbing them in the leg.

Morals can guide or repress. And I also thought it interesting the discussion on how a repressive moral society can achieve space travel. Another issue laid out there but not dwelt on.

Plus this episode had by far the funniest joke in the whole series: "Aaaaah! That is a brand new leg!"

This week's episode was so fun. So fun.
