Catch all for the heavily Star Trek inspired comedy series: The Orville

Just finished episode 2.

I am finding it very enjoyable.

Just watched the first three episodes and I am really sold on this series.
The comedy in it sometimes makes it more realistic. I'd almost say, that The Orville is a bit more Star Trek like, than Star Trek Discovery is at this moment (which is great as well), as The Orville already started to tackle issues in episode three. Maybe ST Discovery will do the same.

Anyway, I just count myself lucky to have both these series available these days.

As for the third episode:

Spoiler:

Wow, not an easy topic right away. Changing gender of a baby.

It's no secret Seth MacFarlane is a Star Trek fan. I was happy to see that he's emulating the original and tackling current issues in a sci-fi framework. I just hope it catches on (it's Fox, after all).

Spoiler:

DICK!

I’m in, for now. However, I’m worried it’ll either get cancelled too soon, or it will remain at its current very middle of the road quality in regard to its homage and tropiness.

Based on what I’ve heard about episode three though it looks like they are indeed going to take some chances.

Edit: Also what are the spoiler rules? No spoilers until aired? Always spoiler tag?

According to a Reddit AMA he's looking to build a universe. An Orvill world with detailed backgrounds, history, races, languages etc. Much like we have in LOTR, Star Trek, Star wars etc.

I'm hopeful that he's able to pull it off because I'm REALLY enjoying it so far.

I'll be sure to spoiler anything from the most recent episode, but I think anything beyond that is fair game, GET CAUGHT UP :).

I'm honestly shocked at how fast they went for the hard hitting topics. I expected a month or two of softball fart jokes until the FOX Execs stopping pay such close attention. I guess after so many years of Family Guy and American Dad paying the bills, Seth Mcfarland may just have carte blanche when it comes to creative control.

Agreed all around, really liking this show so far. Can't wait to see this week's episode.

I'm fine to put in the topic line what the majority here thinks is ok.
As for me, I'm good with spoilers.

Me as well since I watch it as soon as I can. I'd just avoid the thread if I'm not caught up.

For me the show doesn't seem like one where there is a lot of mystery to the plot. It isn't like finding out who the murder was in Twin Peaks, or where the black goo alien was hiding in X-Files.

He also specifically stated in the AMA that each episode would be an open and closed case. Each one should be able to stand on it's own. No continuing stories, though we'll see how long that lasts.

Adjusted the topic with a warning for spoilers

The episode are being played out of order. I don't think it matters for the most part but some scenes might seem odd like the blob scenes and how the doctor reacts to him.

I want a toy - I mean highly detailed model - of the Orville ship to place next to my Enterprise models. 4 episodes in and this feels right at home with the pre-abrams Trek.

What?! God damnit, I hate when Fox does that. It helped bring down Firefly, Almost Human and more. f*ck.

I don't understand how Fox is allowed to keep doing that. After Firefly, you would think every production company that has a show there would put line #1 of the contract agreement in big bold letters; "play our episodes in the right frakking order"

Other than that, I am really enjoying this so far. It reminds me a lot of early TNG. I do hope he changes his mind about no long stories, because I think that is how you get effective world-building. Then again, with Fox already screwing up continuity, maybe he doesn't have a choice but to avoid that stuff...

So how do we know they are out of order? Just by finding the irregularities? Or is there an article about it somewhere?

Just watched the first four episodes, and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. It hits a lot of the same buttons as Star Trek, but without the ... prim and proper vibe. These people are human - they get bored, they make dick jokes, they struggle with hard decisions. It's campy and won't ever win a writing award, but it's definitely fun to watch.

Edit: Also, I hope Dr. Finn and Yaphit get together.

Watched the last episode last night. So fun! So great to see the Colonel from Space Above and Beyond as well!

Going to watch it tonight.....Loved Space Above and Beyond. Also victim to too early cancellation.

And yup, another great episode

Hell yeah. I still rewatch it every so often. Been a few years, I should do another rewatch. Besides Firefly, this and Alien Nation are among my favorite cancelled Fox shows.

Oh, also, the other cameo in this latest episode of The Orville was great as well.

Oh yeah, Veloxi!! I did a double take. Also for the person in the next episode. Very impressed with caliber of celebrity here.

"My name is Dural and I have a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career...."

Dude, spoilers, c'mon.

Talking about an episode after it airs is not spoilers.

Hence the spoiler warning in the title of this thread

You guys are right, I was so excited to talk about The Orville I missed the spoiler thing in the title. Apologies.

Episode 4 looks like a pretty classic Star Trek plot, which seems ok. The ship designs are still stupid.

Then again, the Discovery is a big ugly triangle.
