Apple Operating Systems (macOS, iOS, watchOS, & tvOS) Catch-All

Athros, I see you have folders on the launch bar. Can you drag-and-drop to apps that are within those folders?

I haven't tried actually! I'll have to give it a shot tonight when I get back to my iPad

Will the 32 bit apps just get uninstalled? I could use a good spring cleaning.

I read that they will not be removed, in case the developer later publishes a 64-bit update. I kind of would prefer them to be removed at this point though.

Nice smooth update for my Phone - iPad's been on the beta for months, so I'm not expecting anything crazy there.

I have it downloaded on my phone, but opted not to do the install while at work / away from home, just in case. Good to know that it went smooth for you though.

Updated today, I really like it.

The 'offload apps' feature is dynamite. If you turn it on, it'll automatically delete apps you haven't used for a while, but it will keep their documents and data and the icon will stay where you left it. Then when you go to use it, it will re-download the app if it's still in the App Store. Auto-culling apps! Amazing, especially for guys like me with way too many apps.

I need the opposite: keep the app, but periodically auto-cull the caches of space-hoggers like Twitter and Facebook.

Ars review is up too. A pitiful 13 pages.

Is there any way to tell which apps have been offloaded? In case you want to just be done with them? I never turned it on in the beta because I wanted my 32-bit apps to stick around.

I updated my iPad Pro and my work iPhone SE so far.

Hot take 1: The animations are off and make my iPad feel slower. When I five finger pinch to get home, it used to be as fast as my fingers. Now I pinch... and then... the app closes. There’s also an additional animation if the app is on the task bar where app slides into place. They need to fix this asap (as they’ve done with other releases).

Hot take 2: The swipe down on keyboard keys is a great idea, but poorly realized. Maybe I type too fast, but this has failed for me 1 out of every 2 tries.

Other than that, I love the new task bar and control center. Also, the integrated notifications are a step in the right direction. You still can’t clear all without force touch. Not sure why.

Also, they finally have official support for the flashlight on iPad!!! Now we just need calculator and voice recorder too.

Updated my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. Both went flawlessly and quickly. Very nice!

I have such mixed feelings about this setting because as a developer support guy, I know how much we really love that feedback - good, bad, awful, and wtf feedback. But as an average user, I really dislike being prompted all the time for a review.

In conclusion, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think they could just have a little "review this game" button on the home screen and not be annoying about it. Nobody likes popups!

I'm leaving it enabled for now as I read that there are limits now about how often these popups can occur. (I'm looking at you Waze!) I believe it is time based, and not based on small releases so devs can't continually put out "bug fix" updates to clear their reviews and reset the review popup.

We'll see how long it lasts.

After less than 24 hours, I really miss the 3D Touch shortcut for app switching, and having Spotlight in the notifications sheet. Apple giveth and Apple taketh away.

Does this also affect how often games can prompt you to check out xyz on the AppStore etc.? I've been replaying Infinity Blade II and it blows my mind that it prompts me to buy Infinity Blade III after every single rebirth, in practice about 15 - 30 minutes of gameplay (I already own Infinity Blade III and even have it installed, go and check for it you stupid game).

Actually, you can't. This is against Apple's guidelines since iOS 10.3, and can get you rejected during review.

Apple introduced a new rating prompt system, which you can invoke from your app, but have no control over, and have no way to tell if it actually appeared. Why might it not appear? Because Apple only permits so many prompts from the application within a time period, or the user might have reviews turned off. And since it might not appear, you are forbidden from putting a button down that the user can touch to rate you, because what if they touch it and the dialog didn't appear? It would be a dummy interaction and make the user feel like something was broken.

A sane company would at least give you feedback on whether the prompt appeared or not, and whether the user submitted a review or not. That way you could go, "oh, huh, they wanted to review me, but the in-system prompt isn't firing, let me redirect them to the App Store review page." Or, "oh, huh, they did review me, let me take away the review button or popup so it doesn't clutter up the screen any more."

But Apple is not a sane company, and they hate developers. Hate them.

Hate them with a passion.

Go find me the consolidated list of iOS 11 patch notes, so you can review it and see what areas of your app might break. I'll wait.

This one I’m less sure about - I’ll have to go look.

If you hate Apple so much, why are you posting in the thread Mr Crinkle? At this point I’ve fixed 3 apps, and helped a couple of friends with some other problems to get them through the review process and overall, most of the breakages were because of their code, not Apple’s policies (well, to be fair, one of them was trying to sneak in emulation code which has been disallowed since the iPhone inception so he should have known better). Swift 4 was relatively small transition from 3.1 (as compared to the 2 - 3 transition. Woo that was a Female Doggo), and the changes to the policies around Review pop ups, buttons and so on are due to an outcry from customers because of how obnoxious they were getting. Not Ads, things like “Rate the game” “Are you enjoying the game?” “LEAVE A REVIEW” jumping up every 5 minutes. Unfortunately the IB 2 pop ups are considered ads. I’m also going to go look to see if ther is a flag for the review prompts - I seem to recall there being one that you could have set based on button press, whether or not it went to the App Store, or at least, I remember there being one for the first 3 apps I released to the App Store back in 2010.

EDIT: like I thought. StoreKit framework has all of the error handling you need to handle most of the cases, including a full error set to check for things like Network failures, permission revocation as well as the ability to handle unknowns. There looks to e some internal logic from Apple’s side that can halt the revie window from popping up, and it looks like there is a way to tell if there is a failure for the window to spawn in order to ensure that you can get it up at least once.

Yeah, I saw the app switching is coming back! I'm still pressing the side of the screen, and I've only had a phone with 3D Touch for 6 months.

I'm really not hot on how they made the notifications sheet look like the lock screen (even though your phone's not locked, surprise!). I don't understand the rationale for that at all. But I used it (when it had a Spotlight field) as my app launcher, so even when I was in an app, I could launch another one without having visit the home screen. Now it just means an extra swipe to the right, which is not the end of the world, but at the beginning of September I didn't have to make an extra swipe I'm just sayin

I still don't have a phone with 3D touch so I'm glad I don't miss that app switch feature as I think I'd be pretty upset they removed it.

I actually like how they integrated the lock screen with the notification sheet because now I don't miss any notifications if I accidentally unlock my phone.

Funny enough I never actually used that shortcut - I could never get it to happen consistently. It would happen maybe 1 out of every 4 or 5 attempts, so I got tired of it and just double tapped the home button.

The notification screen change is likely Apple’s obsession with unifying the look of screens - so it looks like the lock screen because it now has the same functionality as the lock screen after they removed the Spotlight bar. I also don’t agree with the change. It’s too fiddly, too many added swipes and taps to get to some functionality. I wish they had the Control Center customization on that screen as well.

EDIT: That is one of the benefits of the new screen PaladinTom.

As there are a few devs here, does anyone know if it's true that the control center widgets will be open for third parties to use?

I'd love a VPN and LastPass control center widget.

Even if they hid a Spotlight field above the time, then it'd just be swipe down > swipe down > tap, which would be easier than swipe down > swipe right > tap

I haven’t seen anything on it yet. It’s possible. I’ll doc dig tonight (I need to anyway, working on some backend stuff for another friend).

Yeah, I agree. Or one long pull down even. It makes me wonder if they’re going to put it in the control center at some point.

I don’t see anything in the docs. It might be planned for iOS 11 though.

It really annoys me that the Wifi and Bluetooth toggles on Control Centre now just disconnect your active connections but leave Wifi/Bluetooth enabled. I primarily use those toggles to manage battery life and stop my phone searching for networks or bluetooth speakers etc, so now I have to go into Settings rather than the one-step I used to have to do. Really stupid and counter-intuitive.

On the other hand I can now turn on Low Battery mode with one swipe, so... it's kind of a wash I guess.
