Star Wars Battlefront II (No, the newer one) Catch-All

Is the no map DLC official?

If so, then that's great news for the reasons you suggested whispa.

I hope they use some sort of skill balancing algorithm for matchmaking. It's been impossible for me to jump back into the first one after not playing for awhile.

I have to be honest, after some consideration when the beta ended I was going to pass on this. I didn't feel like the game knew what it wanted to be - a more arcade style shooter as the first was, or to be Star Wars: Battlefield. In the end it didn't feel like either to me, and the loot crate system was just abysmal.

Finally paying for heroes looks like a good idea in practice, but in reality whoever is best is going to get to that points total first, and if they are that good well they'll probably just be hogging the hero too as they just won't die.

To be sure the first suffered from that too a little, but sometimes you'd be the person that little icon would spawn in front of and not the guy who'd been hanging around for it for the last 10 minutes.

I'm aware that whatever implementation they come up with for release might well follow a different path, but for now, I'll wait and see.

Actually the new system while it may still go to the top people on the map it makes EVERYone PTFO to try and get those points which is more important. Last game you had 5-10 people just hanging around the hero spawn points which was stupid and a waste of time.

It sounds like they're taking a que from Overwatch, and that's great. I like the idea of all of the weapons being available to everyone. All of the unlocks should be cosmetic too.

I think various gun sights would be an interesting unlockable item. Meaning that it doesn't make the gun work any better, but if you prefer a particular sight, then you have something to work towards.

I missed the beta somehow. What I really want is Star Wars: Battlefield, but I'm coming to accept that we won't be seeing that. I do want to give this a try before I buy it, but I suspect I'll be getting it for the campaign alone, even if multi feels like kind of a miss.

10/6 is the open beta. If you've got the preorder it's 10/4. That's a good time to give it a try.

My son wants to pre-order this and I was going to just get it off Amazon, but it looks like they are only selling digital download copies? Getting a physical copy on release day seems to be a bit harder than I remember.

I defaulted to thinking about getting the disk, but I guess there's practically zero chance of him wanting to eventually sell this someday. Maybe digital is the way to go this time. I need the drive space either way.

I love the digital download format. At this point I would probably resent the space that a game disc and case would take up in my tiny condo. I also think of all the gamer shame I that I would suffer if I had to look at a physical pile.

Now that it is MANDATORY to link your origin account to Amazon for the game for some reason it keeps giving me errors when I try to buy it. Whoppeee

Is anyone still playing the "first" one?

Still kicking myself for buying it. Sure, I got the complete edition for $25 or $30 a year later, when it was on Origin holiday sale. And there were a lot of good multiplayer matches around that time.

But I just didn't realize how little there was to do in the single player. Even the 1-2 player co-op challenges were clearly designed for 2 people and continually kicked my ass. A great disappointment overall.

Probably will do a wait and see on this one too, although it sounds much better.

I stopped about 3 months back. You could still get a fairly decent walker assault or Supremecy match (European servers on PC) but every other mode was pretty much dead. Sure you’d occasionally get a game that was full, but the game can’t balance at all and once one side was dominating, everyone would drop off. Also a lot of hackers/cheaters - EA & Dice gave up supporting the game a long time ago. Releasing map packs as DLC really split the player base, it was on a downhill curve from there tbh

I'm playing the first one a bit on Origin, since the game was $5 a couple of weeks ago when they were giving away the DLC (likely both to advertise for the new game, and reunify the player base a bit). I agree that the game is pretty thin, but at that price it doesn't have to be amazing to have been worth it. I don't know if I'm going to get the second one, but I'm more likely to do it now than I was about a month ago, so mission accomplished for EA, I suppose.

Played the first for a few weeks and then forgot about it as there just wasn't enough there. Haven't paid much attention to this one but it does look pretty great in these trailers.

I'm pretty sure the code will only work on XB1.

I'll dip into the beta, but as someone who played the first (well, the new generation first one) at release I'm on the lookout to see if a) there's more content this time around, and b) if multiplayer still feels like a soul crushing meat grinder as I am killed over and over and over..

I can answer, JustJosh.

There will be more content; the developers have confirmed that there will be a single-player campaign this time round. The big question for me is whether it's an extended tutorial (a la Battlefield 4), something meaty with a rollicking story and a lot of variety (like CoD: Modern Warfare) or something meaty and emotionally interesting (Battlefield 1). I inferred from a recent Gamesradar article that we'll be getting something between options 1 and 2.

And multiplayer will be a soul-crushing meat grinder in which we will all be killed over and over and over... Particularly, the larger sided games.

Code has been claimed.

Single player campaign looks to be significant and fully fleshed out.

As to the meat grinder of multiplayer? I tend to do equally as crappy at every multiplayer game I try. I still have fun. Usually I'm in the middle of the scoreboard. Sometimes at the bottom. Never at the top. I'm 47. I've made my peace with it.

That said, a robust matchmaking system that places me with other old blind folks would be greatly appreciated.

I think age-related ineptitude is part of it, RawkGWJ (see the thread 'Too Old for Call of Duty'). For me, part of it was also laziness; I never really bothered got the hang of the range of weapons in Battlefront (2015), and it cost me.

But the other thing was the open and dynamic nature of the bigger games. Walker Assault matches were incredibly fluid, which meant that there was never really anywhere on the battlefield that offered respite. Attacking/defending lines and positions were constantly moving.

I went from middle table respectability in Blast and Drop Zone to cellar-dweller in Supremacy and Walker Assault. I don't think I've been shot from behind as much in any other FPS multiplayer game mode.

I have to admit, I will only play 6v6 up to 10v10. Any bigger than that and I get killed 15 seconds after spawning.

Anyone playing the beta on PC able to play the Strikes? It never loads for me, and have no way to back out so have to alt-f4.

My son and I played a bunch on PS4 last night. My initial impressions were pretty good, and he absolutely loved it.

- I still suck at FPS games, and I still seem to get killed by the same player over and over again.
- I love the starfighter visuals, but the controls are really weird. It kept shifting my perspective around seemingly at random. Did not like that.
- I like that the "hero" options are available just by building up your own personal battle points instead of having to grab a power-up on the map at the right time. Although it does suck to spend the entire match building up points, finally get that sweet rocket trooper, and then immediately die. I think maybe it refunds some of your points if that happens though. I'm also guessing that at some point these will be just as hard to get into, because there are player limits and eventually people will start competing for the good ones.
- It struck me after a few matches that there are NO leaderboards after each match. I wonder if that will be in the final release. I kind of like not having to see myself at the bottom after every game, but it also takes away a little bit of the score-chase feedback too.

Overall, looks like it will get a LOT of play in our household.

I've done little more than look at the menus. Opened some loot crates. Played one mp game. Died profusely. Got a couple of kills. Learned a little about the classes.

I'm REALLY liking it so far. Once I get through a little of the learning curve, I will enjoy it much more. It seems like you start out with crap gear, but earn better stuff very quickly. Learning the maps layouts and game modes will also boost the enjoyment of the game. And my success at mp, I hope.

*Skim skim skim* Anyone remember where the first one had the bigger fan base? Torn between PS4 and PC. I believe the consoles had a larger audience for the first one but I can't remember.

PS4 by far

I played a bit of the beta. Knowledge of the maps is definitely one of the biggest barriers to how well you'll do.

My best strategy so far: As the officer class, place your auto-turret near a high traffic area, and use its fire pattern to spot enemies. Standing near it, heals it. So you have a big potential for getting kills. I suspect that the efficiency of the auto turret will be nerfed in an upcoming balance patch.

Anyone pre-order from Amazon and get a code or anything?

Got one today for Xbox One.

Fun game but I soooo want a Conquest mode with larger maps and free space to drive vehicles...Come on Dice, you make Battlefield..Tired of so many games being CQC.

My other gripe is lack of squad play. At the very least, include different colored squad icons.
