Streamers with jobs

I'll be streaming Destiny 2 in about 45 minutes or so on www.mixer.com/hatchetjob

I'm not familiar with the series, so it'll be me complaining about how stupid the interface is and grumbling about poor UI design choices.

Definitely not me xD

Finally managed to watch Eleima's stream today though \o/

And thank you, Veloxi and Jamos for jumping in, it's a lot more fun when you folks are around to chat with!
I do try to watch other goodjers' streams, but time zones kinda mean I'm asleep when most of you are streaming. =/ Plus, I've always had this weird "I'd rather be playing than watching someone play" thing.

hah. I really just stream for my friends. If you want to listen to me cuss silently to myself while I fail at video games, jump on in.

I fancy myself a bit of a comedian. If someone ever did watch my streams or VODs, I would hope that they get a little chuckle out of it.

I know nothing about streaming, but I'd like to try it. Where do I start?

Simplest thing to do is use something like Shadowplay that comes with Nvidia cards, which is super no-nonsense and just goes to Twitch. Do you have a moniker and a theme/niche?

Nope!

I know a lot of history, and if any game is set from 1789-1991 I'd be able to talk a lot about the history of the times the game is set in, but I'm not sure how relevant that would be.

That's a great unique niche. I'm with Veloxi. Just fire up some basic streaming software and give it a try. NVidia Shadowplay will get you up and running on Twitch. Windows 10 Creator Edition (the version released a few months ago) will also get you streaming on Mixer in no time.

Either option is good enough to get you online, with (or without) your webcam and give you a feel for what it's like. They'll get you online, have you talk to an audience (that may or may not be there) and give you a taste to see if its for you.

Down the road you can try other streaming sites (Twitch, Mixer, YouTube and others all have their pros and cons). You can test out fancier software (XSplit and OBS each let you customize your layout more) - but again, that's all "down the road".

To get started? Just setup an account, and hit "go". See how it feels.

That's a great niche indeed. Get on it!

Yup, I'm of the "I press Alt+F8, and I'm streaming to Twitch" - I need to work on my "radio DJ blathering on" (it's mostly me swearing, or sighing heavily, as I fail...). There really is a skill to just being able to "not shut up" while gaming. (I'm not there )

Just do it... I think I had my highest "concurrent viewers" while playing (not well, I might add) Dark Souls 1 (or maybe it was 2?) - a whopping 6!! It didn't last, but hey it was a high-point for me

I miss streaming Even if I wasn't that good at it.

But yeah, just give it a shot, and let us know in here when you're going live as someone might be able to join you, even just to bump your viewer number up to 1

Best advice seems to be - stream as if there are loads of viewers, even if there aren't. Don't get too caught up on numbers of anything, your first step is to have fun streaming, FOR yourself. There's no sure-fire way to getting more viewers - whether you do niche games with only a few potential viewers, or follow the latest 'huge' game trend, neither is a guarantee of people watching; you're either trying to grab the attention of only a few viewers, or you're fighting against the big boys.

I averaged about 5 or 6 viewers I think, by the time I could no longer stream. I did get raided and had 64 at one point while I was playing the Planet Coaster Alpha, was bricking it

But yeah, Steam for yourself, first, other people second

I'm going echo what was said above. Just do it. I'd been hemming and hawing over whether my laptop could do it. Turns out it can (okay... I generally need to turn the graphics down). You have a great idea for a theme, and starting simple is the way to go.

The best advice though is always to stream like you have an audience; you never know when you will.

Awkward.... Also doesn't help that my name is not Omni on these forums..

That is me- Hahahahah. I stream an unhealthy amount for someone with a full time job. But I don't have kids yet and work 4 10-hr's.. so I'm taking advantage of the opportunity.

(I apologize in advanced for being the last 3 comments in this thread.)

After streaming consistently for about 3 months, I am feeling the satisfaction and the comparison that I coined up initially that Twitch is essentially an MMO grind. Making streaming friends (like BagelMageTV from this community), gearing up with different bots and better overlay tweaks, and overall the daily consistency to be able to keep up with the XP farm (follower count/viewer concurrence)- all things that bleed straight from my MMO addictions of old.

I'm not sure if there are others who have experienced this, but it may encourage you former MMO addicts to get more into streaming!

Hey man, whatever keeps ya streaming and happy.

Hey folks, I've got a shameless plug for you--

I just released StreamCopilot for OBS, a remote control for OBS Studio and your Android phone or tablet. I don't stream often, usually just for a friend or two, but I do record lectures and the like and OBS frustrates me because of how hard stuff like scene switching can be. So I built StreamCopilot and I think it's pretty good. Try it out, let me know what you think?

You can download it on Google Play here. An iOS version is planned, assuming there's enough interest. And the software is under active development; I've got a couple features planned around quick-access panels and making common stuff easier and more manageable, including the bundling of audio and video actions into single button presses.

Sounds good- I'll try it out on my android tablet. I need more ease of access and don't want to shell out the cash for an Elgato Stream Deck (150ish I think...)

Will await iOS!

The next feature I'm working on is a programmable set of large buttons, much like that stream-deck thing. Idea being to sit the tablet landscape on the desk and just tap-tap-execute, or even tap-to-execute. I miss having a Tricaster deck, is what I'm saying.

The hard part is syncing data between devices. That one might be awhile, as I don't want to rely on Dropbox.

So, I think I’ve set a schedule! The Weekdad Morning Stream.

Monday, Tuesday and (some) Thursday mornings. 6:00 AM EST.

Planning to start very basic, and definitely with Overwatch. A daily morning topic, coffee, and a few rounds.

Edit: Should we all be auto-hosting each other? I'm guessing most of us are small - though I see BagelMage and Omnivision raking in the views on the regular. Is auto-hosting actually helpful to anyone?

I autohost and am auto hosted by the GWJ Twitch and I’ve gotten a few views that way.

Totally incompatible with my viewing, but I've reciprocated the autohost that you've had me on for a couple weeks now.

Thanks Toanstation! For what it’s worth, I’m finding talking to myself in the morning to be a very therapeutic way to start the day.

And, it’s been good for my daughter’s morning because she needs to “hear” mommy or daddy when she wakes up now or she freaks out and screams. It’s a new phase.

I’d love to find a small corner of the twitch viewership that would join in for some coffee and chat, but as it stands I’m doing it to feed some intrinsic emotional need.

Really appreciate the auto-host. Thank you!

Played a little bit of an old Star Trek TNG game. Anyone have suggestion on how to do dosbox better than I did here?

with a Z! Keepo

I dropped you a follow. My auto-host will probably do nothing just cause I'm in a stream team at this point that steals all of my auto-hosts 24/7 (I get some in return though so it's pretty nifty) but I'll drop you a *manual* host if I see you on. ^^

6 AM is a great time to stream, I'll try to catch some of them. I do Thursday and Friday morning streams for people to work and lurk in, too.

Thanks Zionine! I appreciate it regardless. you’ve got a presence on twitch I’ll never reach, and I figure the GWJ community is my primary gamer home.

Morning streams are definitely a thing for streamers with jobs, and it always makes me happy to see more. Working 2nd shift I'm not generally awake to catch your stream, Zoso1701, but you've got my follow all the same. Maybe I can catch you on a weekend!

Thanks, Aerthos! Work and family pretty much dictate everything I do... So, I'm super sporadic and prone to change - so sometimes I'll hope to do a random weekend thing. Thanks again!
