Games Soundtrack Appreciation / Discussion Thread

Can't really find the rest of the soundtrack on youtube, but it's pretty solid music. Probably my favorite switch game so far.

It's always time to post Yoko Shimomura. Here's some lesser known tracks:

Parasite Eve was so good, especially the music. I wish the later ones hadn't been so terrible.

Sonic Mania's soundtrack is glorious. The remixes of long-beloved songs are pretty uniformly excellent, but what I enjoyed most was the brand new tracks that fit seamlessly into the best of Sonic music.

So most of the music in Akiba's Trip is pretty much standard for lower budget Japanese titles that are set in the real world but with anime trappings. However, I really dig some of the battle themes because they're totally metal, yo.

Nothing particularly phenomenal but I dug it nonetheless. Can't say it's a soundtrack really worth listening to outside of a few tracks unfortunately.

Though I did find myself enjoying this hip-hoppy bit.

The Elder Scrolls Online Morrowind soundtrack is on Spotify. It's beautiful. Especially track 5.

Open in Spotify

Oh neat, thanks for the heads up. I don't play the game, but I've always enjoyed TES soundtracks.

Halfway through listening, I thought "wait, this doesn't sound like Jeremy Soule", I checked, and it's someone else! Few tracks later on "Grazelands dawn", I thought "wow, it's not Soule but he's doing a great job imitating him"

...Feat: Jeremy Soule.

Haha, I guess you can really pick his sound.

Awesome!!!! I looooove TES soundtracks as well.

As is to be expected, Metroid: Samus Returns has some top notch remixes of old songs.

Destiny 2 naturally had some tracks I really enjoyed.

Trying to make a YouTube video discussing a game's soundtrack, but I think TheGamingBrit does an alright job of trying to highlight the above average effort put into that of No More Heroes 2.

I’m sure it’s been brought up by this point but I’ve always loved the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack. When I was a kid, I’d put the PS1 discs into my Walkman to listen to on road trips. Never knew that it would work but I just tried it one day and lo and behold it worked!

These days, I’m really enjoying the Destiny 2 soundtrack. I love orchestral music and it’s very reminiscent of Halo (gee wonder why?).

No More Heroes has an pretty nice soundtrack from what I've heard. Shoegazer Watched the Stars, Pleather for Breakfast, Philistine, Rocket Surgeon, and lots more.

^ Still Alive is one of my all-time favourite game tunes. The entire soundtrack is just fantastic. While the sequel wasn't nearly as good, I really like the song by CHVRCHES. I think it's a pretty fitting sound for the game. I've actually been listening to the band a lot lately, and enjoy them a lot!

Well, if we're going to be doing music by actual bands I'm going to have to drag in Akiba's Beat. Just finished it, and while my thoughts in other threads have thoroughly gone over my love/hate relationship with it, I did enjoy parts of the soundtrack. A lot of it only really works as mood music while in the game (neither battle nor boss theme are particularly exciting), there are some tracks that are really solid.

Sadly, they don't seem easy to find on YouTube. :/

But I did really dig the maximum anime opening.

However, you can find some of the tracks that play when you activate "Imagine Mode", where the conceit is you basically just pretend you're acting or dancing in a music video or opening anime theme. So, naturally, everything is presented as that character's specific theme.

I have that song and the Mirror's Edge Catalyst soundtrack from iTunes and man those tracks are amazing, especially at the gym.

I thought this was a cool glimpse at some of the recording sessions for Splatoon 2's music.

I love the licensed soundtrack from Dirt 4. I didn't expect a pretty niche racing game to go all out on a soundtrack, but they did this year. There is some trash pop on there but if I'm honest I kinda love trash pop.

A few of my favorite.

That dude in the Phantogram video really doesn't like walls.

Allow me to add in the two favorite I've encountered this year, both old games.

I’m just going to leave one of the most soothing loading screens I’ve seen and heard in a long while:

If you're playing or are going to play Xenoblade Chronicles 2, you might want to encounter these in the game first. With that caveat said, I just can't get enough of this song in it's two versions. In game, I cranked up the music volume and just stood in place to listen. Gave me chills.

Of all the things that I wax nostalgic about from my time with FFXI, what hits me the most is the PlayOnline music

Oh holy sh*t, I have no idea how I forgot about this music despite all the time I put into FFXI. This put a big smile on my face, Alz. Thanks for sharing!

Glad it brought back some fond memories. Did you play Phantasy Star Online by any chance? Because if so, this one might do the same

I can't remember if it's the case or not, but there's a good chance I've already posted about the soundtrack of Elemnt4l. Anyhow, it's great.

Are there seriously no links to Nier: Automata tracks in this thread? This must be fixed immediately:

Here's a good "best of" list if you want a bigger taste that's not the entire 5 hour soundtrack:

Of possible interest to this thread... Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka (Metroid, Balloon Fight, Mother 1 & 2, Pokemon Red/Blue) and Manami Matsumae (Mega Man, Shovel Knight) both released solo albums back in December. Both are really good and if you liked their previous works you'll probably find something you'll love in their new albums:

Chip Tanaka - Django
Manami Matsumae - Three Movements

(I believe they're also available outside of Bandcamp as well)

I'd only played the demo back when it was released, but I am listening through the GBomb GotY casts atm and the one caught last night they spent a fair while praising the Nier soundtrack. So this morning I was listening to that very same best of video whilst working, pretty good.

GB also mentioned the chiptune versions the music in game too, so searched and listening to that too...

The music is another reason I shall defo be playing this game at some point in 2018.

I'm really digging some of the arrangements in Fire Emblem Warriors as I play. I don't notice it as much due to the incredible prevalence of spoken dialogue and sounds of hacking, slashing, and anime emphasis, but when I notice it, the jam is thoroughly pumped.

Unfortuately I can't find a variant of the Fates Medley that isn't "extended".
