I'm not sure how I missed this earlier, but a cop dramedy starring Will Smith is coming to Netflix. The twist - it's set in a magical LA with faeries, elves, orcs, etc. Reminds me a lot of Shadowrun.

I have had my eye on this for a while, and it looks amazing.

I didn't realize this was more than just a cop movie. That is awesome!!!

Wow, that trailer was WAY better than the last one. Totally looking forward to this now.

The Orville

The music and the editing around the commercials are as ridiculous and they are wonderful.

Came looking for this thread to say I like The Orville! Super surprised to see the second episode on Hulu (haven't watched it yet). Dropped cable so really the last drama or action show I liked was Burn Notice, but I hardly ever meet a modern hour-long show I like.

Glad they mostly pay attention to physics! Except for the obvious part where nobody managed to get shot and no matter how strong you are, you can't just knock a wall down like that, that requires momentum.

I don't know when it'll air, but I'm looking forward to it.

This is incredibly satisfying and happy news! Hope it gets on Hulu.

Fox's favorite pastime is cancelling sci-fi shows.

This is not news, but saddening.

So apparently I was in the 1st episode of Season 2 of Channel Zero. The episode was a bit rough, I thought the audio mix was strange. But it's already more exciting than the 1st season.

My dad knew within 5 minutes where they were going with Ep 2 of The Orville, but the ending was a nice twist. I am still enjoying it, but I don't think he likes the lowbrow humor bits.

The lowbrow humor is so infrequent. I am genuinely surprised and totally on board with the show.

I'm finding the characters a little thin and un-interesting so far, but it's early days yet. I also hope they don't just re-tread (*cough* rip-off) the same old sci-fi tropes we've already seen before. It's a nice homage to STTNG right now and I'm interested to see if it turns into something more on its own.

I think I figured out the Orville. They are characters with "lowbrow" tendencies acting honestly to situations. Essentially slightly absurd characters in serious situations. I'm digging it more and more.

We always see the best of the best on the flagships... this is the average people on an average ship.

Looks like Syfy posted the first episode of Channel Zero season 2 on youtube.

As for Orville. The series is pretty rough, but there are moments in both episodes that give me hope.

Yeah, they hammered the point in the first episode that the Orville isn't their show's equivalent of the Enterprise. That makes me think at some point they will bump into their Enterprise and we find out their crew's a bunch of stuck-up snobs.

Gotham:

Rick Rolling, a member of the Buschemi family, proto-Batman, proto-Catwoman, full-on Scarecrow. Yep, this was a jam-packed episode.

Third episode of The Orville was pretty serious. The tone is very different from the first two but I liked all three so far.

The Orville:

They could've handled a plot involving a trans child a lot better than they did. Instead we got transphobic pseudo-Klingons and a girl forced to be a boy.

They were female phobic not trans phobic. It was the exact opposite of trans phobia because they were forcing the girl to be a trans boy instead of being a girl.

plot point about my above statement.

Spoiler:

Even the adult trans male was accepted by his husband after finding out he was once female.

I swear someone mentioned IFC's "Stan Against Evil" season two popping soon before, though I can't find it anymore.

I blazed through season one on Hulu last night (it's only eight episodes) and really enjoyed it. It's exceptionally quirky, but in a good way. Plot-wise it's basically a funnier version of "Supernatural" that's centered on a town that burned 142 witches back in the day.

Also speaking of Hulu, Fox has already added the pilot episode of Craig Robinson's and Adam Scott's "Ghosted." It was a little frenetically paced, but it did manage to introduce the characters and world quite nicely. And it had crazy good production values and special effects for what is essentially a half-hour comedy. I'm looking forward to future episodes much more than "The Orville," which still seems off to me.

I just finished watching The Orville episode. I thought it was really good. The jokes were still not great, but it was the best episode of the bunch. I thought they handled the topic really well, in there own way.

Wow the new Star Trek. That was fun!

I made some observations in the show thread, but I am cautiously optimistic. It has more depth of character than older Trek - not everyone is goody-two-shoes. But, someone made a good point that it looks expensive to produce so the ratings have to stay high - which is going to be a challenge when they lock it behind the paywall...

It is still streaming through their pay service only right?

I am really liking Orville. I find it interesting that it isn't Galaxy Quest the series. It really is Star Trek + camp. The camp doesn't always work but it isn't off putting. I though the third episode was really bold for a new series. The subject matter was more akin to a "Twilight Zone" episode.

note: funny that Brandon Braga directed the episode and is a consultant and/or a producer

In the US (and Canada?). Much more sensibly on Netflix in the rest of the world

I think the first episode was broadcast and is available online without paying, but the rest will be only for subscribers.

Which worked, because my wife went from "Hell no," to asking me how much CBS All-Access is. I suggested we not watch the first episode, since the rest were going to be paywalled, after seeing commercial, she was interested.

So we may end up paying for the show, after all.

I'm happy to give the new Star Trek a long wait because of this. I have cable and subscribe to 3 streaming services. I have no tolerance left for companies holding shows hostage because they missed their chance to be Netflix.

Ducktales:

Plot twist, woo-oo!

Also, Margo Martindale as Ma Beagle!

The Orville:

Someone from GWJ said on Twitter that they didn't want to be that guy in criticizing Star Trek Discovery, so I'll be that guy with this show. Would it kill this show not to treat its female characters as badly as it has? Episode four had the doctor sexually harassed by the blob character (again), the first officer tortured, and the security officer shot. And next week we bring in Charlize Theron to be the villain.

SNL was good.

Another Baldwin Trump open, hilarious commercial with jeans, and Weekend Update had some highlights.

And papyrus font.
