NCAA college football 2017-18: Official thread

Thanks to CarlBear95 for the new hero image.

Obviously wanted to show off the 15 yard facemask penalty on the offense!

Last UCLA win in the Joe Roth game at Cal.

They've beaten us plenty of times in non-Joe Roth games since 1998, and Cal hasn't won in LA (USC or UCLA) in forever million years (ok 2009).

Ah, ok yeah. I didn't really think that all the way through.

That is Cameron Goode's pick 6 to seal the game! DEFENSE BEARS DEFENSE!

Wooo! FSU football for the first time in weeks. We need all the help we can get on offense.

Ags have now beaten Arky SIX years in a row in yet another overtime thriller.

Since we can't get out of this ill-advised contract to play a conference game in Jerry World, the next-best thing is Jerry having to watch his Hogs lose it every year since we joined the SEC!

Man, our offensive line looked bad. I expected the rust and some of the penalties, but it looks like we are trying to get another qb hurt. Jimbo needs to recruit more stars at line

Aww fudge. Cal hung in (and partially led) for 3 quarters, and is now giving it away early in the fourth.

Purdue too.

Wake-App will be the big talk at work next week. App had them dead to rights with a FG to win, but Wake blocked it and survived 20-19.

Wake pretty much needed that to go bowling. Next 5 weeks are FSU, Clemson, GT, Louisville and ND. They'll be lucky to be 5-4 then from their current 4-0.

Also no one can figure out the last time Duke and Wake were both 4-0 in football.

This week proves once again that you should never ever turn your back on college football no matter what the schedule says (or what *I* say about it).

Moments ago, winless Baylor was leading #3 OU. Now OU leads by 4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Oh my goodness. I almost never have to listen to them, but: Gus Johnson and Joel Kratt are awful.

Plus side, ND thumping MSU!

OU survives.

UK about to blow a lead to lose 31 in a row to Florida

Bwahahahaha

Go Gators

Holy sh*t Penn State

Oh, Kentucky, the lovable losers!

Super disappointed for Kentucky fans. That streak is epic. Is that the longest streak in the nation between conference foes?

Lots of near misses with upsets last night. I guess FSU and OK State were the biggest ones?

Edit: We have a win streak of 24 vs TCU right now, but haven't been in the same conference since the SWC, and I'm not sure we've played them since then, either.

Longest current streak period. Was tied with Clemson over someone, but I think that was an FCS team, not FBS.

Looks like next current conference streak is Ohio State over Indiana 22 in a row, but they haven't played every year

Oh well, Cal wasn't going to go undefeated, so losing to the number 5 team in the country is hardly something to be down on. Football is 60 minutes not 45, but at least for those first 45 we had USC on the ropes. It ultimately came down to a series of plays early in the 4th where are O-line just couldn't keep overachieving against the talent of USC.

I'm hopeful about the future though. A lot will be said with this upcoming game. @Oregon for the1st conference game away for QB Ross Bowers and the new coaching staff. Our Defense continues to improve but the Oregon offense has been prolific. We'll see if we can handle them. With @Oregon, @Washington and WSU, I'm still hoping for 1 or 2 wins but that will be a tall order.

I caught most of the second half of Penn State at Iowa. Was a great game to watch as a neutral observer. Lots of heartbroken Hawkeyes in that stadium who were this close to watching their team pull off another night game upset against a highly-rated conference foe.

Michigan's defensive halftime adjustments against Purdue were fantastic. I think Purdue had something like 170 yards in the first half, and single digit yards for almost the entire second half.

The contrast between Ohio State losing badly at home to Oklahoma the other day, and Michigan State losing badly at home to Notre Dame on Saturday, was kind of amusing. The OSU fans seemed silenced and stunned, having hardly ever seen that kind of thing happen to their team at home lately. The MSU fans, on the other hand, were cheerfully chanting their "Go Green! Go White!" late into the 4th quarter down multiple touchdowns.

Wrong forum.

Week 5!

I'm going to outsource this week's viewer picks to SB Nation.

Looks like they have five must-watch games:

Miami-Duke at 7 p.m. Friday (ESPN)
USC-Wash State at 10:30 p.m. Friday (ESPN)
Georgia-Tennessee at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (CBS)
** Clemson-Va Tech at 8 p.m. Saturday (ABC)
Cal-Oregon at 10:30 p.m. Saturday (Fox Sports 1)

I'd add Miss State-Auburn (6 p.m. Sat, ESPN) because it's a pair of ranked SEC teams. Oklahoma State-Texas Tech (8 p.m. Sat, Fox) might be interesting.

Otherwise, that's a pretty decent slate of games with some OK Friday night matchups for a change.

PAC 12 after dark is awesome tonight. 17-17 in the 3rd. Think I'm staying awake for the rest.

Ouch. Just fumble the game away.

I didn't watch the second half because I needed to get up and do things this morning (hopefully replacing my flooded car), but I couldn't be happier for The Pirate!

As poorly as FSU has played since halftime of the Bama game, it's ridiculous the way the sporting media is playing up the fact that they are "winless". Yes, they have yet to win a game, but they have played half as many games as other teams.

It sucks that a season that was once so filled with promise (although I didn't think this was a team that could mount a serious challenge this year, which I think I posted earlier) is now one in which fans are deeply concerned about becoming bowl eligible.

Edit: Damn. Just saw the hero image for the thread. First time FSU has been on the banner (that I remember) and it's for this. sadface.gif

Oh, and congrats to Wazzu! I picked them in the Reddit pick 'em. (But I only gave them one confidence point)

Well Wake Forest is still Wake. Nice comeback FSU

It was ugly and we are suffering injuries left and right, but it's better than a loss
