New TV Season 2017-18

Instead of a giant schedule of shows, I'm going to just start a new thread, and start linking to some articles on the new shows to look for. Hopefully we will all have some shows to share and discuss.

I saw this on NPR today.

NPR's Fall TV Preview: 11 New Shows To Watch Out For

The shows they discuss:

The Deuce, HBO (Sunday, Sept. 10)
Star Trek: Discovery, CBS All Access (Sunday, Sept. 24)
Young Sheldon, CBS (Tuesday, Sept. 26)
Will & Grace, NBC (Thursday, Sept. 28)
Ghosted, Fox (Sunday, Oct. 1)
The Gifted, Fox (Monday, Oct. 2)
The Mayor, ABC (Tuesday, Oct. 3)
Dynasty, The CW (Wednesday, Oct. 11)
I Love You, America, Hulu (Thursday, Oct. 12)
White Famous, Showtime (Sunday, Oct. 15 )
The Last O.G., TBS (Tuesday, Oct. 24)

I just saw a trailer The Deuce and the description makes it all the more appealing:

The Wire creator David Simon has assembled a compelling drama about the rise of the porn industry around Times Square in the 1970s — back when Manhattan's 42nd Street, nicknamed "The Deuce," was way too seedy for Disney stores.

Don't be distracted by the gimmick of James Franco playing twins who each run a brothel and a bar, or the sight of male equipment on a show where the nudity is equal opportunity. Instead, focus on the story of how the legalization of porn created a billion-dollar industry and Maggie Gyllenhaal's daring, explicit performance as a prostitute turned porn director. — Eric Deggans

But overall, I have to say, it feels a bit like the golden Age of TV is beginning to recess a bit. Still much more TV to watch than I have time. But the number of new shows I am interested in has dropped considerably. Some of that is that I might just be burned out on the next cool thing. I'm still enjoying many of the last cool things.

What are you looking forward to that is coming back? I'm mostly looking forward to where they take both The Exorcist (FOX) and Outcast (Cinemax). Both are possession tales, but are also much different from each other. I still haven't gotten a chance to start The Sinner, which is supposed to be another possession tale with Jessica Biel. Not sure what is driving this as the new monster stories. But I have an odd fascination with them.

I'm looking forward more to The Orville than Discovery. I will watch the pilot, but certainly won't be subbing to CBS All Access. If it's that good, I'll buy it on iTunes to support the show, not the service.

I don't think I'm even going to watch The Inhumans at all.

ABC ... Get Krackn... with the Kates from the Katering Show.

I don't know when it'll air, but I'm looking forward to it.

I think I'll wait for the Blu-Ray set. Or for the first season to be fully released and do a free trial of All Access.

Yeah, I'm not buying into CBS's All Access for anything. I've got more subscriptions than I need now.

If CBS wants to dip their toes in that water, release it free, but with forced commercials. Otherwise, I'll subscribe to providers with far more content that I'm interested in.

Gifted looks interesting.

Don't know about Young Sheldon. As much as I causally enjoy Big Bang, I'm just not sure.

Still pissed about Star Trek being a prequel even more than the bullsh*t they are trying to pull with CBS All Access, while the show is on Netflix in every other country. Screw Paramount and CBS.

So, that was a hell of a season premiere of American Horror Story last night. So fun reliving the night Trump was elected.

I really wondered if the entire episode or season was just going to be progressives melting down. But no, it soon delves into all the other crazy we can count in AHS bringing.

The theme really is identity politics. This season is called "Cult," a take on how committed we are to our tribe. Even Peters is pretty fantastic as the alt-right douche hole in the story.

Gonna be a bloody, crazy season.

My fiancee and I watched it last night and we couldn't decide how we felt about it. It felt like just when we were over the election, they brought back a lot of frustration and anxiety of those months. Evan Peters was immaculate, but made her uncomfortable since he hits really close to home to the people she deals with every day. American Horror Story is doing what it does best, but instead of being fascinating horror when set in the past, it's feeling much more like a this-could-happen-to-you angle.

It shook me up for those very reasons. It also shook me up because I'm just as guilty as some of the progressives in the show for how they reacted to the election results. Those were some really, really dark days.

I'm not sure how I feel either. I think I will need to see where all these storylines go. I think it was Rolling Stone that said this season seems almost bother too soon and too late to cover this topic. My wife is out because it is still as violent and bloody as ever, but even in those first scenes, when it felt like the show really was just going to be about the horror of being progressive in Trump's America, I don't think she could have gone back there.

My wife cried herself to sleep on election night. Some of that is just too close to home.

I'm not entirely sure on this, but I heard that a lot of the filming was done before the election finished, and they intended the show to be a what-if scenario. Since it actually happened, it feels like they tripped on their own feet a bit.

The premise was enough to get me to give AHS another shot. I watched the first season through but didn't make it through Asylum or the Magic School one. How can anyone like clowns...

Count me in the "not subbing to All-Access" for Discovery. I love Trek, but this is such a blatant grab at subscribers to a service that offers nothing else of value for me.... nah.

I guess that means new TV Trek doesn't stand a chance (but this isn't TV Trek, really, is it?).

I am very hopeful that Orville will deliver a Trek feel I have been missing on television, but am sure the humor that 22 year old me would have loved, will have me cringing a bit at 32.

I'd give "Magic School" another chance. It really did bog down, but the last several episodes really make up for it, in my opinion. I'm assuming you are talking Coven.

The Orville:

I found it entertaining, though it suffers from Seth MacFarlane problems (he's the lead, sometimes he doesn't know when to stop a joke). And it's not Galaxy Quest in that it's a full on spoof of Star Trek; the best analogy I can come up with is if the crew in the movie Down Periscope served aboard a Starfleet-esque ship instead of a United States Navy ship.

Given the negative reviews for The Orville and that I dislike Seth MacFarlene's humour, I was expecting to hate The Orville. I found it surprisingly entertaining and MacFarlene's sophomoric humour worked well with the show. Believe me, no one is shocked more than I am to say that. The Orville felt like TNG with a crew of normal modern day humans rather than the paragons of virtue that were the TNG cast. Pilot episodes are also notoriously weak, so I'm excited to see the rest of the season.

For those who are planning to watch it, just remember that The Orville is not a comedy. It has jokes here and there, but it is not a comedy. It's a straight up homage to Star Trek.

I wouldn't say it's an homage to Star Trek so much as it's just Star Trek where someone played Madlibs with the script. It's the Union instead of the Federation, Krill instead of Klingons, etc. It seems almost lazy how generically Star Trek it is.

This is probably a good time to remind folks that the next Ken Burns joint hits PBS in a week or so. We got to see clips of "Vietnam" last Saturday when he came to UMSL to speak about it.

I have to say it was intense as hell. In this doc he not only covers the US, but they go pretty deep into covering both the North and South Vietnamese.

Also, in a clip about the divisiveness and construction of the Vietnam War Memorial, it got awfully dusty as people began to understand the memorial.

It's a 10 part documentary starting September 17th on PBS.

I noticed there are no transporters. Maybe they'll introduce them later to comedic effect, but I'm hoping it's because their presence would make things too easy. How many times did Star Trek have to break the transporters?

Probably one of the most interesting things about Enterprise during the first season (which is all I ended up watching) was that they had acquired transporter technology but it was new so everyone avoided using it because it made them nervous.

I maintain that the concept of Enterprise was great but it was executed really poorly.

So was Voyager. Great essays out there by Ron Moore on what it could have been.

Another prequel is definitely not the answer though. At a time when TNG nostalgia is pretty high, they could really capitalize on some guest stars. And maybe pick up some interesting dangling threads from it, DS9 and Voyager.

But this CBS all access thing is going to suck. And it'll be another decade before they try again. And we'll probably lose some more actors by then.

Voyager should have been Stargate Universe and Stargate Universe should have lasted another season.

If the Orville had literally anyone else as a lead, I'd watch it, but I just can't with McFarlane. He's got some strange power that laughter just cannot escape.

I watched The Orville premiere last night and I found it enjoyable. I, on the other hand, do like Seth McFarlane and enjoyed his quips. It wasn't over the top like A Million Ways to Die in the West (which I also liked...so shoot me), but the humor was well placed.
The similarities and parodies of other series are fun, as well. I can't think of anything in particular but so far I'm liking it and will continue to watch.

I feel like the show needs a season to get on it's feet, but once it does it will be really good. Let's hope he has enough favors he can call in to get it there.

Fox's favorite pastime is cancelling sci-fi shows.

The commercials have me kind of sold on Vice Principals. Anyone want to confirm it's worth my time?

It's funny, but I felt like it was really too mean to really enjoy. The main characters are complete sh*theads.

I might give it another shot, but I didn't really find it fun.

Good to know... I was looking for fun based on the commercials.

I'm not sure how I missed this earlier, but a cop dramedy starring Will Smith is coming to Netflix. The twist - it's set in a magical LA with faeries, elves, orcs, etc. Reminds me a lot of Shadowrun.

I have had my eye on this for a while, and it looks amazing.
