WTF is up with this thread and drama? It's like a magnet. ;)

Is this drama?

Drama the drama drama?

Probably.

I've been thinking about this a lot since Certis shut down the previous Switch threads. Why do the Nintendo threads draw such contentious conversations? It seems like every week or two we're all squabbling about something else. How can so many different topics get people so heated?

But I think there's really just one topic expressed in a lot of different ways. Nintendo is a stubborn outlier in an industry that highly prizes conformity. Competing platforms are expected to maintain feature parity; publishers are expected to develop their "take" on any given popular genre; innovations from a best-selling game are expected to propagate to the other games in that genre.

Buyers value conformity, too. We want to be able to play equal versions of games we're interested in on the platform of our choice. We want controls to be consistent across games. We have fairly strict ideas of what all the buttons and sticks and triggers should do, and we tend to complain when they don't do those things. We expect features to be implemented in certain ways, and we question any decision to not make those features work in that way.

And then there's Nintendo.

Parity, consistency, and industry norms don't seem to be a priority to them. Those things may not even be of value to them at all. This can cause a lot of friction with players, because the more you expect conformity between your games and platforms, the more friction there's going to be when you try a Nintendo product. Things you expect to do, you can't do. Things you don't expect to do, you're required to do.

That's really what the perennial conversation is about here: how frustrating or rewarding are those differences, and to what extent should Nintendo be expected to be like other companies. You have some people on one side shaking their heads and saying that Nintendo should get with the program. You have some people on the other side shaking their heads and saying that players should just give things a chance. Most people are somewhere in the middle with different degrees of tolerance for Nintendo's outlier status.

But I think that's where all the drama comes from.

TL:DR - don't underestimate the heart-warming catharsis of getting your greivance-airing on.

How much more Mario can they possibly have to show? I feel like there are dozens of hours of gameplay on YouTube at this point, there won't be any surprises to be had in that game.

Hoping they lay out their online strategy, and maybe show off or get ready to launch some VC stuff. I imagine we will get a launch date for XC2 and start seeing more of that Fire Emblem Warrior game. Would love to see something new for early next year but I don't think they usually do that at directs so they?

I'm also still surprised they have 3ds stuff to show, metroid feels like the swan song for that system.

Is there really that much drama? Isn't it just a typical console thread 6 months into its life cycle.
And even if there is heated conversations, is that bad?

Was my thought as well. Hope they focus on other stuff.
Not really interested in watching tons of gameplay for games I want to play. That is spoilers.
Tell, don't show.
Guess there might still be people tuning in who has not heard about any upcoming Mario games. Have to be diminishing though.

A good amount of perfectly normal discussions in these threads get called out as "drama". This seems to create actual drama almost without fail. Maybe we should stop doing that for starters.

Like you mentioned, Nintendo is a stubborn and strange company. Some of their crazy decisions result in delightful innovations, but some of them are incredibly frustrating to a large number of players.

I know many of you get frustrated when the same Nintendo complaints are rehashed in this thread, but it's going to keep happening whenever A) new Nintendo players are discovering these issues for the first time, or B) the same issue reappears in a new game or situation. And that's fine. If you don't want to hear the same arguments, don't participate, but don't chastise others for bringing it up again if the same frustrations resurface in another game.

On the actual topic of the last several pages, I'm completely indifferent about the implementation of achievements as long as I'm able to turn them off.

It's almost 2020 and Nintendo still produces a handheld gaming system. That's incredible. I'm thankful for Nintendo. Thankful for 8/16 bit style games and really thankful for a platform to play games like Fire Emblem.

Where I will get frustrated is when they release a GBA SP Classic similar to the SNES Classic and then I can't get my hands on it.

I'm hoping for the Zelda DLC #2 stuff.

It's weird how I still don't believe XC2 is this year and have been waiting for a delay but they keep saying 2017.

It doesn't end in Nintendo threads. It just doesn't. We've been through it over and over and over again.

And, yes, as Clock points out, the Nintendo threads tend to be mired in it a bit more, but they also do things rather peculiarly so they have more things to kvetch about.

Yeah, launch date for XC2 is still needed. It'll be December but what day exactly? Lock it down, Nintendo!

Seriously. I need to either pre order the disc or plan to buy digital if I'm out of town visiting family.

Why does Nintendo draw strong opinions?

Minute 2 minutes, 50 seconds;

man that game over thinker video brings back memories how old is that at this point lol. Love it.

Reggie says don't pay auction prices for snes classics.

Not sure where to post this since the direct thread is now closed, but it sounds like they may actually have more then enough snes classics to go around, could be good news!

Switch is in a pretty interesting position. It might not get the 3rd party support but between 1st party and indies

This is quickly becoming one of my pet peeves, and I'm not ragging on you specifically, but I really wish people would to stop treating indies as not third-party developers when talking about 3rd party support for a system. The industry is at point where indies have a significantly higher volume of output than the major AAA 3rd party devs and quite often they're just as popular or as high quality as AAA games. If not more so.

tl;dr: indie support is 3rd party support.

YAY! 45 minutes long too!

Hoping for XC2 date, Kirby 3DS (i don't care that this isn't the 3DS thread, deal with it), Octopath Traveler details, and hopefully some surprises (online system and a sneak peak at stuff for TGS/EGX). I'm guessing this will cover mostly holiday 2017 titles and maybe some Q1 2017.

Also worth noting that they went out of their way to mention there won't be AC Mobile but it's also the day after Apple's event...

As someone who hasn't really been following Odyssey that closely I feel like there's a lot about the game I haven't seen or heard about. So I'm really excited for this even if it ends up being a rehash of information that's been shown outside of Directs (I didn't really get a chance to watch much of the Treehouse @ E3 covereage this year).

I'm also still surprised they have 3ds stuff to show, metroid feels like the swan song for that system.

Pokemon Ultra Sun / Moon, Sushi Striker, Kirby 3DS, Dragon Quest XI (English), and Atlus has like 2-3 more games coming out in the next 6-9 months. That system is never going to die.

I can't speak for anyone else but when I speak about indie compared to AAA I am talking merely about the budgets that go into the games development. I believe B teir titles of the early days are long gone, pretty much all studios operate at AAA development levels now.

I get what your saying I guess, but I'm not sure it's worth getting peeved about. Indie seems to be used to describe small teams of developers with small budgets I don't think there is anything deragtory in using that language.

Good call on those 3ds games totally forgot it's got some bangers comig out after Metroid. That such an amazing little console.

I get that's what people mean. It's just a bummer to keep seeing "no 3rd party support" "where's the 3rd parties?" when it seems like every week there's at least one or two new games on the eShop to look at.

But then again, I'm also someone who generally ignores about 80-90% of the AAA space these days, so maybe this is just my personal bugbear like I said.

Damn... Looks like GAME have lots of Switches back in stock, not only that they're offering them up with a £20 off discount today.

The current hot Switch title was made by Ubisoft.

Not sure what you mean? I consider Ubisoft a triple A developer. Rabbids is a smaller title but it still a AAA title it's got the backing of two huge company's.

Switch Online smartphone app was updated last night. The update now allows you to continue using voice chat while the screen is off and while the app is running in the background.

That's def one of those things that they should've had ready for launch. I hate playing the "shoulda, woulda, couda" game, but that's such basic functionality for a communication app that it's pretty messed up that it was left out.

I think it's just another data point towards the "soft launch" theory for the system as a whole. App wasn't fully baked, online service infrastructure got delayed, etc.

Tagging in for duty! I am lucky enough to be the recipient of a Switch today for my birthday, so I'm looking forward to getting caught up on whether or not Nintendo is terrible and what classification schemes we can apply to developers. I might play some games too.

Received my Waterfield case today. It is pretty nice. A bit bulkier than I expected, and the blue is MUCH darker than it looks on their website, but overall I am happy with it and I think it will provide great protection when I take it out of the house.

I also have a screen protector I bought from Amazon a few days ago, but I haven't bothered to put it on yet.

Last accessory - the Joy-Con racing wheels. I would skip these if you are hoping they are like the wheels that were available for the Wii/WiiU. These are much smaller and not as comfortable to use for Mario Kart, really not much difference from just using a naked joycon. I am probably going to return them.

Question - Does anyone have a solution for wireless sound that they like? I am missing the Pro controller not having a headphone jack more than I thought I would, after coming from the PS4 controllers. It matters to me because I like to play for a bit using headphones after everyone else in the house goes to bed. Right now I just use the console as a portable, but would like to use it on the TV if I can find a headphone sound solution.

There is no Bluetooth headphone support on the console if that is what you are asking. You would need something that attaches to your TV audio output.

I plug wireless headphones into my receiver to use when I'm at home. If you've got one of those there's a lot of options out there.

Most TVs these days have 3.5mm and optical audio out so it shouldn't be all that much different.

My kids like the wheel joy-cons, for what that's worth. I think it's useful for them for imagination purposes.

Watching the direct now. Project Octopath is looking good! Glad they showed some more of that game and that a demo will be available. I'm excited to see how it actually looks on the Switch.
