Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

Unfortunately, because they have to keep parity with retail pricing lest they piss off the B&M stores, the digital prices match the higher physical price. Which is dumb, and I hate it.

Yeah but then there are articles like this which offer hope. Hopefully publishers can tack on a soundtrack with the retail version and avoid the wrath of the mighty retail stores.

Making me pay more money because Nintendo is being sh*tty about margins is one thing. I can deal with that (respect the hustle, Nintendo). Making me pay more money because Gamestop/Best Buy didn't innovate their business is unacceptable.

This article just published today says that Nintendo charges publishers equivalent to blu-ray cost if their game fits on a 8GB card, but for a 32GB card Nintendo actually charges more than $20 per card to the publishers. Sheesh! They are really raking them over the coals on card pricing with that monopoly.

Seems like Nintendo putting in a barrier to publishers doing cross platform releases, which you'd think is the opposite of what they'd want to do.

Well there ya go. No wonder they're charging $10 more for Switch carts. They have to. If for no other reason than to shame Nintendo into lowering the mark-up.

I hope this doesn't affect digital pricing as I'll be buying mostly digital anyway.

But they don't always. Puyo Puyo Tetris is $30 on the eShop and $40 on cart.

LA Noire will be $10 cheaper on eShop too. This is the 3rd game I think (along with Puyo Puyo Tetris and Rime) with physical cart on Switch costing $10 more. It's weird, kind of a bummer, and a topic we have discussed to death already.

Quote is not edit.

I think the Switch not having spec parity with the other platforms is a bigger barrier to cross-platform releases for publishers than having to foot the bill for higher capacity cartridges.

This is one of the trade-offs of using cartridges over optical media. Part of the reason Japanese publishers fled en masse from Nintendo to Sony was due to production costs of CD-ROM titles being significantly lower than N64 cartridges.

It really is the Vita 2.0. We even get the same arguments.

Yeah but the Vita thread didn't have to be rebooted to provide a "clean slate" so people didn't have to slog through repeated arguments.

Also, I swear gaming has the shortest "cultural memory" possible.

That's because we were all too busy having sex in the streets after Sony announced the price.

Found a red/blue switch at Toys R Us today. Just got the console. I've got until Christmas to get any other things needed. Told my wife the two older boys are all set for Christmas. Of course it might be funny to give them the switch but no games.

4 pages in and I see more complaining about complaining than actual complaining about the Switch. I guess I'm curious what the line is between discussing the Switch and complaining about it.

I'd like to talk about the Switch. Did before. Still want to.

If you're having a conversation about how something is super dumb, and you'd think Nintendo wouldn't want to do that, and you're bummed/mad/annoyed about it, and Sony/Microsoft/Apple/Steam haven't done it that way since 20XX, then you're probably complaining.

Saying that, I should probably find a forum dedicated to discussions about game development. Or start a thread here. I don't have a strong opinion about paying more for Switch games. The Switch is a portable and a Nintendo system, so I'm all in. I'm completely fascinated, though, by how Nintendo can code Switch games at the size they do, etc.

Having little to no voice acting. Synthesized music instead of streaming. In-engine cutscenes (when they exist). Those are the big ones off the top of my head.

Nintendo: It's not us, it's you.

Mr. Dragon and I went to Target for boring apartment stuff and they had not one but five Switches, which we didn't expect to see. One (somewhat anticipated) impulse purchase later and we're setting up our new console. Got Zelda and Splatoon 2 to start. We'll see how much apartment setup vs. saving of Hyrule happens this weekend.

Congrats! I saw my first one in the wild a few weeks ago at a Fed Meyers. They're slowing appearing!

Zelda is a magical game.

I'm completely fascinated, though, by how Nintendo can code Switch games at the size they do, etc.

Having little to no voice acting. Synthesized music instead of streaming. In-engine cutscenes (when they exist). Those are the big ones off the top of my head.

In general, they tend toward art styles and designs that allow for a lot of asset reuse. Their games typically go for a cartoony look with a blatantly unrealistic or even surreal world holding them together.

How many unique things do you see in a level in Super Mario 3D World? The bricks and question blocks and pipes and platforms and enemies have all been used and reused throughout the game. If there's a unique feature to the level, it's some kind of large piece of scenery (maximizing the visual impact of a single asset), or it's built out of those other assets, like a particularly twisty pipe maze or block pyramid or whatever.

They also just do less. Think about the enemies in Breath of the Wild as compared to the ones in your typical, say, Arkham game. If you face off against a group of Moblins in Breath of the Wild, they probably all use the same model or the same two or three models. Differences between them are often done with big, highly visible accessories like necklaces and weapons that aren't part of the model itself but attached to it (and thus reusable).

The Arkham crowd, on the other hand, is going to do everything in its power to convince you that the enemies in this crowd are all unique. They have different hair styles, different faces, different clothes, different accessories, different voices, and so forth.

This is also where things like voice acting come into play. The Arkham guys are expected to talk, and they're expected to say context-appropriate things, and they're expected to say those things in the language the player speaks. When an enemy sees Batman, one of them yells one of a half-dozen phrases, then the others respond with another set of phrases, and then throughout the fight, they all contribute their own little combat barks. In English, and in French, and in Spanish, and in German, and more depending on your region. All those languages are included on the disc because that disc gets shipped to a variety of places.

What do the Moblins do when they spot Link? They get an exclamation mark over their heads, they flail in surprise, sputter some weird noises in Moblinese, then attack. By using mime, gibberish, and universal iconography, Nintendo accomplishes the same things. They can get away with it because the overall design of the game, its world, and its art supports that kind of minimalism.

Nintendo's using a lot of the same tricks that were commonplace in the industry in the GameCube era and before. They've been working under size constraints for decades, and they've learned a lot in that time.

Rumour that Nintendo is working on an achievement system

Personally I havent really cared about achievements since the early 360 days, but I do really think Nintendo games would be a perfect fit if done right. There is usually so much hidden depth to their games that I could see this being really cool on this system. Would be really neat if it was included in old VC games giving people a reason to replay them. Even in a game like breath of the wild giving gamers a way to change the game (a no death run, or naked run) would be really interesting.

They've implemented achievements on a per-game basis, just there's never been any system level infrastructure for it. This might be me being a curmudgeon, but I kinda prefer it that way. Not every game needs achievements and as time has gone on I've increasingly found system notifications to be more disruptive than I used to.

Gamers have never needed an extrinsic system to encourage that. Stuff like Final Fantasy 'All White Mage Party' runs have existed for ages without needing a rewards system to nudge people in that direction.

I agree when achievements are lazy and no creativity is used then the systems are pointless. When creatively done though they can give alot of creative ways to complete games, its also a fun when competing with friends to see who can be first to do said thing with a little bit of proof that you did it.

My problem with it being on a per game basis is I need the game to surface those leader boards, if I can see them at all. Its kind of cool to check someone account and see that so and so did something in a game I hadnt played in awhile that may spark my interest in going back.

Achievement stamps on the Wii U are awesome and would've been more awesome if they could've been used account wide and not just in-game and Miiverse.

Hopefully they do something cool like that again, but it'll probably be underwhelming like My Nintendo coins.

Stamps were so cool.

On the other hand, an achievement system would give me an excuse to play through Breath of the Wild again.

I sincerely hope they never implement a system-wide achievement system.

I've never experienced a system wide achievement system. What's bad about it?

I can give you that excuse - Master Mode.

Not that I doubt you, but how have you managed this? Steam, the Xbox, and the Playstation ecosystem have all had achievement systems for a decade. Both major mobile platforms have them, too.

Also kind of curious why people would be against it if its well done and not lazy. Isnt it largely ignorable if you dont want to achievement hunt?

Yes, it's easy to turn of achievement notifications on the other platforms.
