Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

I have to say the thing I think I find the nicest is the ease of using different profiles. I am sure it was possible on other systems but it is so easy on the Switch.

Finally I can have my save, and each kid can have their save. It was always annoying to have to make a manual save so I could let them have a turn to run around in a game (I had to save so that I could pick up where I left off rather than being stuck in whatever weird situation they got into)

I like the way it's presented. There's no primary profile that's front and center. Everyone's on concurrently, and you pick who you're playing as when you launch a game. That goes a long way toward making the Switch feel like a shared console and not a, "it's your console and sometimes others play on it". I think that's great.

  • New Shovel Knight Amiibos are inbound
  • I'm loving that Amiibo shelving unit
  • Quite possibly my favourite video about Amiibos now. Maybe even better than Griffin's Amiibo Corner

YES. I spent a bunch of time organizing the folders on my PS4 for my wife, putting the games she would like in her own folder. Then she started it up, logged in on her account, and...gone. I guess if we were both hardcore gamers maybe it would make sense to have our own organizations but I like sharing the same setup so much more.

Some upcoming Switch games will require a memory card even if you buy physical? Can't really wrap my mind around why this would be...

Because they didn't wanna make a bigger cart. Think of it like when some physical Xbox360 games started requiring a hard drive after years of not. Fallout 3 was one of the first, I think.

Now that I think about that, you still have it with the other consoles, and some 3DS games. You buy a ps4 disc and still have to download 10gb patches. You can play plenty of FF Theatrhythm off the cart, but can't do the DLC without a memory card. So this isn't really new or surprising, imo.

Other 3DS games are more restrictive. The Etrian games require an SD card in order to save map data, which if you've played them, you know is a significant aspect of the game.

I'm just curious to see how big of a card is really needed for the Switch.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's like they didn't think ahead. They could have easily included more storage in the system itself. Do SD cards allow for backing up data? I thought I read that they didn't.

Also, I saw NBA 2K18 requires one are there any others that are known yet?

Well 3DS didn't ship with much in the way of on-board storage (if any).

I'd guess 64 GB since that's the smallest option that the article SanDisk is giving Nintendo branding. That's also a really healthy amount of storage for most games these days. Like DOOM 2016 needs around 60 GB on PC but that's largely due to 4K textures which is something the Switch isn't going to be doing any time soon.

Sure, and they would've had to price the system higher as a result. Which they probably didn't want to do.

Why can't I use my internal storage for this? Or are they going to be giving us games bigger than a cart AND 30gb of internal storage? That seems unlikely.

Oh, I wanted to respond to this. I don't think bigger carts are the cause here. The Switch carts are read-only, so any post-release updates or live content would need to be stored on disk.

My guess based on some of their other policies on Wii U and 3DS is that games have a limit to the amount of additional content that they can write to internal storage. If developers want to exceed that limit, they'll need to write to external storage.

Really, all this is is that 2K and other publishers will have large aspects of their games that depend on new data post-launch. There are a lot of games that fall under this rubric now, it's just largely invisible on other consoles because those consoles have mandatory hard disk space and installs.

It's theoretically possible. Current game cartridges sizes cap out at 32 GB. For comparison, The Witcher 3 is 35 GB on PC. Again, some of that is due to texture sizes, but if you get something in the 20ish GB range and then tack on DLC, higher-resolution texture packs (for playing on the TV), or (dare I say it) mods, you're going to quickly exceed the internal storage.

For what it's worth Xenoblade Chronicles X had additional downloads to allow you to load texture and model data from the Wii U on-board storage and those totaled around 10.5 GB and that game was only pushing 720p. Who's to say there won't be devs or publishers who are either trying to be frugal (a 32 GB cartridge is more expensive to produce than a 16 GB one) or don't have the room to store textures for 1080p and require you to download them separately for "enhanced visuals" when playing on the TV (as the Switch in handheld mode is 720p)?

It's going to be a lot easier for Nintendo and their partners to say "you're going to need a memory card for this" upfront than to have people get home with their new game and then start kvetching about why they have to decide if their Breath of the Wild download is worth keeping on the system.

Or they'll do that anyways because Nintendo

I finally have a Switch! Target had two grey ones in stock so I got one, along with Zelda, Mariokart, and Kingdom Battle.

It is more comfortable to hold as a handheld than I was expecting, while at the same time the screen is a little smaller and it is a little heavier than I expected. Feels much more quality over like a 3DS or the WiiU gamepad.

What are you guys using for cases for yours? I really like the Waterfield one, but it is $80 and I'm not sure I can justify that.

Tagging for when Switch has any games

Which seems to be soon. Best league in the world.

I only buy Waterfield anymore, so that's what I have. I think it's worth every penny.

This is all fine and dandy until you realise that your lovingly crafted scenery photography from Zelda is awash in a sea of doorframe and Creeper shots from Minecraft courtesy of your 4-year old daughter.

The screenshot-functionality is basically useless without some kind of folder structure between users, or just basic tagging.

Yup. I've got the Pouch in leather and it's awesome.

Man you two are not helping

I got this simple case and it works great. A few other people have it too.

It would be very un-Nintendo, but it would be really cool if they allowed Steam streaming on this thing.

Someone is working on that.

I also have the Waterfield case and it's great.

Took my switch on vacation. First time since day 1 I've genuinely wished it had Netflix.

My case. I like that it holds the second set of joy cons and cords. Works well. I also have the glass screen protector.

My one item wishlist for Switch is a left joycon with a regular dpad. Otherwise the system is wonderful

I'd dearly wish for a) support for bluetooth audio, or b) a joycon with a headphone-plug. But really bluetooth audio. Pretty please!?

Not sure if it's by design or not, but I thought I was looking at Link from BOTW momentarily in the still image for that first video!
