Nintendo Switch Catch-All

Well sh*t, I always conjoined the "+" and "Plus" into one and thought it was a general discussion for the PS+ service specifically.

I could have vomited my thoughts on Akiba's Trip in there instead of the pile thread God dammit!

Getting a switch for the kids for Christmas. Is there a place to discuss the switch, hardware, games, etc? This thread just seems to be about complaining.

Sure. Hardware and general platform questions here, games over here.

Peas! I kinda did the same thing.

We should keep the games thread. I just didn't know it existed. Sorry?

As usual, trying to be too clever bites me in the ass. I'm going to change it. A dedicated PS+ thread also makes way less sense now than when the thread was created.

And I'll also stop filling up the Switch thread with non-Nintendo talk starting now.

I doesn't bother me but I still don't understand why the Switch needs a dedicated games thread instead of, and along with, games getting their own threads. It's not like there are dedicated game threads for all the other platforms. It seems rather redundant and unnecessarily exclusive.

I guess we have it for Android (hardware and OS) and a separate thread for Android games.

Yeah, I don't understand that either. I just browse the IOS games thread as a mobile games catch-all because it is much more active and the worth while ones usually come to Android. Anyways, it doesn't bother me if people like it that way. My only loss is that I might miss some discussion on a game I've enjoyed or am currently playing.

Ditto.

For what its worth, now that this discussion has run its course I'm ok with a dedicated games thread.

That's in large part because there's always new hardware coming out for those. There are other reasons, but they're much less important than separating out the hardware and troubleshooting from the gaming talk.

Much like we only have a 3DS and Wii U thread for both hardware and software, I don't think we need two separate ones for the Switch, especially since we have a Nintendo News thread. That News thread will die of natural causes within the year.

Having a Switch Games thread felt like an overreaction to all the hardware talk, which I get, but a cleaned up OP could easily take care of much of the hardware discussion in this thread, as others have said. The hardware talk has mostly died down anyway and game news keeps getting posted here fairly regularly because that's common practice. Want to talk about a PS4 game? Post in PS4 thread. New 3DS game? 3DS thread. iOS game? Who am I kidding, no one cares.

Hardware talk will come and go in cycles, as new hardware is announced, goes on sale, holiday gifting, etc. I'm of a mind to grin and bear it. It's not as if the Switch is going to be iterated on every few months and once the rush is over to get Switches, SD cards and controllers what will be the point of this thread? Like the 3DS thread, like the Wii U thread, games would be discussed primarily with some hardware talk. Now that we're getting a bunch more Switch games, I'm pretty sure the game talk will drown out the hardware talk anyway. At the beginning a lot of hardware discussion was taking place because there were so few games to discuss and people were excited. The latest Nyko controller won't likely be mentioned

Sorry for the wall of text, I've typed up posts a couple times over the past few weeks and scrapped them, but this topic isn't going away, so here's my brain dump. If we have two threads, cool. If we have one thread, cool. C'est la vie.

FWIW, I don't get all the talk about the hardware thread being "exhausting" or "frustrating". I just don't understand. Do whatever with the threads. A lot of crazy sh*t has happened this year in my life. I know other people have gone through a lot of crazy sh*t. My blood pressure doesn't go up 1 point when someone asks about screen protectors or memory cards. It's just video games. This is the release from the stuff that really matters.

Well said, DS. Puts things into perspective.

Are... we really shaming people for having mildly expressed feelings on video game discussion in a video game forum?

So hold on. Getting frustrated about repetitive talk about screen protectors and being snarky to your friends is "sharing feelings", but expressing that you don't understand why people get worked up about those discussions is "shaming"?

Hi. You must be new.

I didn't take it as shaming. I went through my share of "crazy sh*t" this year so the last part kinda hit home.

I didn't see anyone worked up about those discussions, just expressing the preference that they be in another thread.

Before the last 3 pages of meta-thread talk, we didn't really have any of the screen protector/memory card/Nintendo online sucks complaints for a long time. I really think we got most of it out of our system.

I understand the complaints if this was a few months ago, but this has been a pretty games-only thread for a long time. It's pretty much farley posting videos/topics and people riffing on them.

I prefer a single thread because it involves everyone and prevents weird cliques forming and discussions splitting off, but I don't care that much. +1 that Demyx handled it perfectly. Just link when you can.

Loving Rabbids, by the way! My fears of baby-game-for-babies were unfounded and it's got some real meat on the bone.

I get that. It's when I see words like "exhausting" and "frustrating" I just don't understand it. Honestly. Keep two threads or three. I want to talk about games. I enjoy talking about hardware sometimes. I'm even happy to participate in the "complaining about how Nintendo doesn't get it" thread if we must make one.

But there's literally never been a day in the last year especially where I've opened up GWJ, saw the number of comments on the Switch thread and hovered over it with trepidation. I literally think, "Oh good, something fun to talk about".

I have thoughts. I'm going to take it over to the game thread (created while I was writing this).

RoughneckGeek wrote:

The last couple of pages of posts and dismissal of the frustration that caused the creation of the Switch Games thread last month has done more to convince me we need a separate thread than the frustration itself.

Wait, really? You really think the calm and productive discourse of the last few pages is that unacceptable?

I like the idea of a separate games thread because often, when there is a major discussion around hardware, business practices, or other stuff tangentially related to games, discussions about less-popular games posted at the same get drowned out. Perhaps that won't happen here, but it has happened quite a bit in the PS4 thread.

There's always been something about Nintendo's ethos and their games that have this quality of being a bit more ... spiritual or perhaps personal than a majority of game companies, so I'm not surprised we see more discussion about discussing their stuff. When I sit down and really think about Nintendo there's a magical air about them and that's something I'd get real defensive about protecting if I felt it was threatened. I hope they keep doing their thing for a long time to come.

I'm going to lock this thread, the games thread and the Nintendo Direct thread up and make a new Nintendo Switch Catch-All for a fresh start. If a Nintendo Switch game merits a wider discussion (like Mario + Rabbids) it can get its own thread, same with any 'issues' that take up too much air time.

Same thing we do for other platforms, we'll just need to make sure we re-direct threads a bit more actively. I strongly encourage folks who follow Nintendo closely to PM myself, Hypatian or Dee to give us a heads up if things get too derailed on one aspect. Sometimes it happens so quickly we don't catch it right away.

Maybe a thread for non-AAA e-shop games in particular is a good idea. Hmmm ....

New catch-all.
