Cripes, Browns cut Joe Haden. Salary dump!

Feeding frenzy for an oft-injured CB on the way?

I hear the Jets need players and like to sign over the hill CBs.

Cian Fahey did his tier list/QB ranks prior to the season. Not shockingly, Josh McCown is #33 out of 33. Who is #32, right behind him, and two spots ahead of Jared Goff?

What I think is incredibly interesting is Certis being compared to Bortles. They both overthrow and should be intercepted more often!

Fahey ranked Colin Kaepernick #18, one spot behind newly-highest-paid-evar Matt Stafford.

First stage is BORTLESMANIA. Now, we've gotten to BORTLESDENIAL. One day, you'll finally get to BORTLESACCEPTANCE, and we'll all be there for you, man.

Seems about right to me. Kaepernick is a mid-tier QB that you can get to the playoffs with as long as you have a few players better than him.

*sigh*

The answer is yes for half the teams in the league!

And way better than Joe Flacco.

Let's be real. We've never truly moved on from BORTLESOHNONOTAGAIN. Everything else has just been a wishful front.

The Chiefs shipped a 5th round pick for Cameron Erving. I can't believe anyone wanted him, he's been bad. Almost as bad as Aguayo.

Looking forward to drafting Colton Cruz with that fifth rounder.

Is he a kicker?

That is surprising. I figured a conditional late rounder was as good as could be hoped for.

So, Haden and Erving done. Oz stands alone. Who's buying?

Erving has been utterly terrible, and I'm shocked anyone offered anything.

Haden has already signed with the Steelers. Three years, $27 million, $7 million this year. Gotta do something to slow down the Patriots.

I'm just glad he didn't go to Tampa. Don't really trust a guy who's been that bad and/or injured for a few years.

This was the blurb I just read:

http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/...

Erving, 25, is a 6-foot-5, 313-pound lineman that was selected 19th overall in the 2015 draft by the Browns. Erving was a left tackle in college for Florida State but was drafted as an offensive guard for Cleveland.

The Browns eventually switched Erving to center and he struggled at the position. In Kansas City, Erving will likely used as the swing tackle and as an emergency guard.

Jah Reid has been struggling during the preseason in that role for the Chiefs and is due over $7 million in the next two seasons, so it makes sense to bring in someone like Erving for cheap to replace him.

Seems like a waste of a 5th round pick, but I guess they saw a need.

I love how the story talks about how the Browns get to save $4 mil with Haden's guaranteed salary off their books. Now they'll have $59 mil of free cap space instead of the penny-pinching $55 mil they had before the move.

Oh but this was great from OverTheCap, after the cut but before Haden was signed:

Because Haden is already owed $4 million by the Browns the most likely contract will be one that pays him the minimum, which I believe is $900,000. Anything more than that but under $4 million simply helps the Browns and would make no sense for a team to do. Given Haden’s play it is unlikely a team would pay him much more than $4 million anyway especially this late in the year when many teams are tight on cap room.

Oh sweet summer child...

Football Outsiders on Cam Erving in FOA:

You’d be hard pressed to find an NFL team that suffered a bigger talent drop-off at any one position from 2015 to 2016 than the Browns did at center. While Alex Mack was voted to another Pro Bowl in Atlanta (a game Mack missed because he was preparing to play in the Super Bowl instead), Cam Erving and the Browns were struggling just to function in Cleveland. The Browns surrendered 19 sacks to defensive tackles and 10 more to inside linebackers. No other team gave up more than 11 or five, respectively. The Browns were 27th in adjusted line yards on runs up the middle and tied for first in fumbled snaps, and Erving was one of five centers with at least seven penalties.

It wasn't just Center he was bad at, they tried him all over the place, which may be part of the problem.

Super-duper in depth article on Aaron Rodgers as interviewed by ESPN's Mina Kimes in her living room and for which according to her on SC6, he got a parking ticket. Oh yeah, and he talked quite a bit about Kaep and protests.

Patrick Mahomes made a final night of preseason exciting and fun. Seriously, I was giggling at points during this game. The kid is not a lock to be a star, but he is going to make some great plays. It's really going to be how many INTs he can avoid. Last night he threw 2 that were called back, one on replay (which I think was wrong) and the other on a penalty.

But he also made some tremendous plays, as well as guaranteeing Demarcus Robinson a spot on the roster. His video highlight are here:

The one play where he rolls to the right and chucks it 50 yards down the field. You go boy! You earn that Favre comparison!

He's going to be so much fun to watch until Andy Reid crushes him down to an endless series of five-yards dumpoffs.

FIFY

Spoiler:

Checkdown!

Something to brighten everyone's day: http://deadspin.com/why-your-team-su...

Sheldon Richardson traded to the Seahawks for Jermaine Kearse and a second-round pick. Well, Seattle's defensive line just got patently terrifying, and I'm sure Jermaine Kearse is completely capable of filling in as a #1 receiver SARCASM DETECTED.

I'm going to assume it's Richardson for the pick and "we're probably going to cut this guy anyways, do you want him".

Also, in utterly shocking news, Brock Osweiler cut by the Browns.

Holy shit. Sorry for everyone who has to play Seattle.

MilkmanDanimal wrote:

I'm positively shocked, I tell ya.

Sheldon Richardson is a good get for Seattle, even if he was the odd man out of the Wilkerson/Richardson/Williams high draft pick triumvirate.

Second round pick is a high price for one contracted year, but Seattle is obviously in win-now mode, as a good number of defensive pieces are in the twilight of their Seattle careers (Richard Sherman obviously, but Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett are on the wrong side of 30, and with contracts that may press the issue sooner than later.)

I wouldn't be shocked if Richardson ends up getting paid out of the money currently earmarked for Sherman and Avril in 2018.

And as for The Oz, I'm still pegging Indianapolis as my most likely destination for him. A team that signs Oz will likely be one carrying 3 QBs, which is on the rarer side, but is most common when you've got an injured starter like Luck, or just a completely shaky group across the board.

Oh, and I find Kearse as #1 receiver about as funny as Milkman does. But getting a second round pick makes it a good move for the Jets. If you're dumping and tanking, get some high draft pick value while you do it. Too bad the 2nd rounder will be based on Seattle's record and not their own.

Oh, darn. They won't add his name to the jersey or his face to Draw Play's Browns QB hydra.
