Destiny Catch-All

I have recently been trying to finish up the Taken King storyline but it seems to have a lot of patrol missions that need to be done (hunt taken lieutenants and the named guys on the planets). Are these missions part of the story or just extra stuff? If they are necessary to the story what is the best way to get through them? I will be honest, waiting for random events to trigger and then needing extra people to take down the bosses is really annoying.

Yeah, I think I hit a wall with that too. I got up through one or two missions involving fighting Crota's ghost. Then I hit a spot where I think the next objective were to help two of the NPC dudes, except neither of them had missions. I checked guides, and I think those two missions were the ones you're talking about (patrol planet X for stuff), but I couldn't figure out how to get them to pop. With Destiny 2 around the corner, I decided I'd gotten my $14 worth out of Destiny 1, and stopped playing.

A lot of that stuff was more fun/dynamic with lots of people playing. The events sort of fall apart with the lack of people doing them. Also, all that stuff where it required knowledge from the internet/groupthink to know what to do next was really quite bad game design.

That stuff is all extra. I don't remember what the rewards were, but don't believe they were really worth the effort. At least as far as loot is concerned. If you're still leveling, the XP gain might be a different story.

Guess I will just skip it all and start the rise of iron story then. Seemed like there was more there since I occasionally got Echo of Oryx missions.

is anyone picking this up for the PC?

Kind of spoiler but yes you will still see echo of Oryx. Technically in story you only kill oryx first form. The final form you kill at the end of the raid.

Tried the PC beta and it ran like butter.

I didn't play Destiny 1 but this felt like classic Bungie; tight controls, great sense of presence and a nice core gameplay loop. The strike was fun as was the story bit. PVP seemed ok but I don't imagine I'll be playing a lot of it on full release.

The only reason I tried the beta was to figure out what class I wanted to go but it really just made the decision harder.

Kinda wish the ability cooldowns were lower.

The PC beta should still be a pretty old version of the game. AFAIK, ability cooldowns will be lower at release.

Oooo, good to know.

The Farm is going to be playable tomorrow,

Tomorrow from 5 PM to 7 PM Pacific, the Farm will be open to players in the PC Beta. Come take in the scenery. The Vendors have the day off.

I was moderately hyped for the PC beta but I heard you will get demolished playing solo so forget it I guess.

Huh?

With the exception of raids, Destiny is ultimately playable solo. I did all campaign stuff in D1 alone, as that's my preferred gig for campaigns, and had no issues. Additionally, playing with Goodjers is a ton of fun.

Edit: Of course, you could be talking about PvP, but the same holds. I played a quick round solo (matchmade w/ pubbies) and it was fun.

Yeah I'm talking about PvP, what I heard was its come with a premade group or don't come at all.

For things like the Trials of Osiris? Sure. Otherwise, no this is wrong. You can matchmake into matches and it's mostly fine.

I may be wrong, but I think the majority of the D1 community played all three classes to some extent but usually had a "main" class/character of choice. For the most part, the typical variation of this seemed to have been those who played three of the same class to increase their drop chance from Raids and/or prior to Nightfall's loot and account changes a couple of years ago.

This is certainly true of the people I played with, although many people also played multiples of the same class in the beginning because raid armor was random and the only way to hit max level.

I was even worse than that. Had Titan/Warlock/Hunter all at 29 back when 30 was the max during the age of Vault of Glass. Deleted my Hunter in favor of a second Titan in order to have two cracks a week at the boots that would make my Titan 30. Finally got them, deleted my second Titan, recreated the Hunter and then got all my classes maxed. Stuck with the one-of-each up through Oryx, then deleted the Hunter again and made a second Titan again.

I am amazed at the time I had.

definitely wrong

I played a good deal of the PVP when I was playing (first three months after release) and it was all solo. I still had a ton of fun with it.

Edit: A few of my friends and I are going to start up a fresh character in Destiny. We haven't played since about 3 months after launch and we figured it will tide us over for six weeks until the PC version launches.

Funny enough, I just decided to do the same thing this weekend. (Except that I only ever played the beta for the first game.) Having a great time with it, and very much looking forward to playing the sequel a bit more seriously when it's available at the end of next month.

One question though: given that I'm pretty much just treating this as a single player game, is there any reason for me to try to join a clan? I've heard that in Destiny 2 you get bonuses when members of your clan do things, but I wasn't sure if there were any passive bonuses related to being in a clan in the first game.

There are definitely clan membership bonuses even if you don't actively participate in multiplayer. You do have to contribute to the clan XP in order to partake of said benefits, but you can do that pretty much entirely in single player.

TL/DR; yeah, you should still join a clan, you will get goodies.

Is anyone still managing the PS4 GWJ clan then?

I tried poking around on bungie.net, but it seems like all the tools available there only service Destiny 2 now (I can't even seem to check my grimoire cards). Hell, I think I used to actually be the leader of the GWJ bungie.net clan back in the Halo days, but I handed it off once Destiny launched, so maybe I'm already in the clan? Things seemed ambiguous in game, though, and I couldn't find any clan joining tools either in game or on the website.

This is Destiny 2 advice. Does not apply to Destiny 1

There are no clan benefits in D1 unless you're going for trophies/achievements.

Ugh. Yes, reading is fundamental. Of course, I am not good at it. Sorry about that KFE.

Okay, cool. Yeah, I definitely intend to take part in that once Destiny 2 launches on PC, but good to know I can safely ignore it for now.

Good afternoon all, first post and all that. I was pointed in the GWJ direction by a very kind person (1Dgaf) on Eurogamer with regards to possible clan activity on here. I'm from the UK originally but now reside in Calgary so all my buddies and family from back home tend to giturdun on weeknight evenings when I'm still in work. Any clan or friend activity happening with people on this board that I could perhaps get in on?

I played quite a bit of the first until burning out after the second DLC. I currently have 265ish titan and working my way through a hunter (LVL 12 atm). I'm by no means 'good' but I can listen to instruction and use the Mic as required. Cheers!

Hey Tiggy, welcome to GWJ! I would advise reposting your question in the Destiny 2 thread here: https://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/...

Be sure to include the platform you're playing on. There are GWJ clans for both PS4 and XB1 for you to join.

Welcome! 1Dgaf is awesome, and you can tell him I said that! Friend me up if you're on Xbox.

Thanks both, I guess which console would've been helpful.

Still could be, one day!
