There are a lot of games vying for my attention this week, and my Steam wishlist has grown distressingly. However, there is only one game for me this week, and not because it has a phenomenal pun in its title.

Well, not just because.

The first Rock of Ages captured my heart with its wacky take on the tower-defense genre and unique method of teaching art history (teaching by having players smash iconic paintings with a giant rock). The sequel, subtitled Bigger and Boulder (squee!) looks to be more of the same, but with new rocks, new paintings, and new dad-jokes. How could I pick anything else? Rock of Ages: Bigger and Boulder (squee again!) gets my nod for Game of the Week.

XCOM 2 is like my beard. At first I found it irritating, what with its “gnaw off your arm or pull out your teeth” Dark Event choices, newfangled concealment phases and mission timers. But after a few months, it really grew on me, and now there’s no going back, even though I frickin loved XCOM and all its expansions. These days, when I want to waste aliens on a grid, I only ever fire up XCOM 2.

War of the Chosen is the next big expansion for XCOM 2 and it shakes things up more than Enemy Within did. It introduces factions – enemies that hold grudges à la the groovy nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor – and more cool personality traits for your own troops. One nice touch is a Valkyria Chronicles-ish bond system, where squaddies become buds and grant perks to each other when on-mission together. And that’s before we even get to the new mission types, recruitable heroes and zombies The Lost.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is hands-down my GOTW this week – the only hard choice will be what naming convention to use for my first squad.

Comments

Rock of Ages was a strange game that I admired and liked for a little while, but tired of quickly. It's certainly unique and I'm interested in what they do with the second one.

Mario + Rabbids: The game I never knew I wanted until it happened. That said, no game buying for me atm. Will pick up for the holiday season, I'm sure.

The same goes for Everybody's Golf, which I'm interested in, but since I won't likely be playing it anytime soon (backlog, no time, etc.) I think I'll wait for a sale down the line.

Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the original Yakuza game and is totally and completely the best place to start. They just announced Kiwami 2, so the second game will get an HD treatement. Budget priced at $30, so I recommend it to anyone interested in a Shenmue-esque brawler game.

PC count: 100

f*ck me, how can I not buy a remake of the first game in a series I've always been curious about getting into when it's priced like that?

Mario XCOM and XCOM for me this week.

Turn based strategy overload

Edit: And probably checking out the Destiny 2 PC beta.

Exactly. Smart move. You will not be disappointed. Maybe.

So Yakuza and Everbody (Hotshots Golf dammit) are my picks. The only golf game I love and it isn't on a handheld either.

I'm more excited fore Battlestar Galactica Deadlock than I have been for a game in a long time. I'm even more excited for that than I am the XCOM DLC.

Ah sh*t, I forgot about Everybody's Golf too! Yakuza, Warriors, and this are going to put a bit of a dent in the checkbook this week.

Mario Rabbids for me. I'm really looking forward to a strategy experience on the Switch and this game pretty much caught me off guard.

As soon as I saw gameplay I knew it was XCoMario, and I knew I had to have it.

Love seeing the interest in Everybody's Golf. I already preordered. Last day to get it for $32 with the Amazon prime preorder discount.

I hope we can get some big GWJ tournaments

Curious how Pillars of Eternity fares on its migration to consoles.

One of my top favorite RPGs of the past decade.

Shouldn't be too bad. I know the Tornment game (which ran the same engine) came to consoles as well. Performance was on the bad side but playable and there was a semi official steam controller config put out by the developers as well.

Long list but only Everybody's Golf for me.

Yeah, the only downside is that reading so much text on a TV is less enjoyable to me than reading from a monitor. Of course, I'm near sighted so I prefer the monitor.

The other CRPG games that have come out this gen that I own on PS4 (Wasteland 2 and Divinity) have worked out great, other than the aforementioned minor reading issue.

Sometimes people talk about which games are or will be system sellers (you want to play the game bad enough to buy a whole system for it).

If I could afford it, Everybody's Golf would be a PS4 system seller.

Sounds like Everybody's Golf

Fits GWJ to a tee.

Yeeeaaaaaahhhhhh!

I thought War of the Chosen was delayed on PS4 - if it isn't then I am super excited!
