Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Huh, I'm starting to have to actively avoid Dan content. For quite awhile he had toned things down, but I've encountered 3 videos/podcasts or so lately where I had to just turn it off. He seems to have turned his ignorance card up to 11 lately. He's also been really stressing his taste in games where anything with story and characters is bad.

He had toned things down pretty well for like a year there. I don't know what it is as of late. Maybe it's just me and being frustrated with ignorant people as of late.

No, it's Dan. He's terrible.

In the days when he was with Game Informer he made some really entertaining stuff. They were a bit more buttoned down in style though plus Tim Turi was somehow able to keep Dan under control. Dan's Half Life Super Replay was pretty hilarious at times. Now Dan is just this dervish of chaos and the content is suffering for it.

I agree, he's suddenly come back to his ignorant stance hard with the Wal-Mart and such. He needs people to remind him that he's being like Paul.

As for the story thing. I don't think he's been saying story games are bad, just that story is not what pulls him into games, so if a game is all story, there is no appeal. I think that's fine. I mostly ignore story in games except for rare exceptions where it's good. I don't even give most games a chance anymore, if they're not respecting my time with good dialogue in the first 3-4 sentences, then I won't ever read another sentence in their game. Not worth my time to read an elementary school story.

Still enjoying Exquisite Corps, and loved the recap, but I agree with Chaz, it was so frustrating to watch them screw up so many basic things. I'm not usually bothered when they're bad at games, but something about the turn based strategy game format makes their blunders particularly excruciating.

Don't make me agree with Dan, but man video game stories are a low damn bar.

...did Brad offer up Guns & Roses as a corrective to the glamy metal horsesh*t of L.A.? If so, that's...insane.

I don't take Dan seriously enough to be annoyed by him. I'm seriously far more bothered by how bad everyone is at all these games. It's frustrating but also something that we've all discussed before in this thread ad nauseam. Then I watch the Mega Man feature where they're just shooting the sh*t for a couple of hours and I remember why I love Giant Bomb. *shrug*

Whoever came up with the Ken Burns' Civil War style recap idea for The Exquisite Corps deserves a raise. Even if it was Dan.

It's clever, so it seems unlikely that it was Dan.

True. I don't think Abby's going to have much competition for whose are the most funny though.

I'm still firmly behind Rorie, or anything he is in. Yes, he has a patented ability to not pay attention. Yes, he cannot focus on even the broad details of whatever is being played at the moment, and will then rehash something that was just said to the exasperation of the rest of the crew (especially Jeff)... but GOD DAMN IT, it's so perfect and I swear he does it on purpose.

On a somewhat related note, Kingdom Hearts sucks y'all, and this new series is reminding me of why I thought all my friends in high school were crazy.

This week's Bombcast featured basically the same discussion about satellite radio and the Guns n Roses station that they had just a few weeks ago, and the same conversation about the Sonic ISP they have every few months or so. Generally I like their free-ranging non-video game discussions but at least this week I'm starting to think it wouldn't hurt to make things a little tighter.

Fair warning: Dan is in full heel mode in Exquisite Corps Part 3. Spoilers ahoy:

Spoiler:

I really hope he was putting on an act, cuz man, the whole "I want me to be safe", and then carelessly leaving everyone standing around in the middle of nowhere, not paying attention to where aliens were thing was pretty over the top.

I was actually kind of pleased when his "me first" routine resulted in complete and utter failure. I don't know that people were leveled up enough that losing two KIA and one seriously wounded will be a mortal setback to the overall run, but it won't be a help.

Really looking forward to Abby's reaction to the sh*t pile that Dan left for her.

Thesis: Dan is the Donald Trump of Exquisite Corps.

Yeah, that was the highest extreme of Dan mode I've seen yet. That video is pretty much the culmination of this entire thread(they suck at videogames, Dan sucks).

Yeah, that wasn't even fun. I skipped to the end maybe two moves into the actual mission. "Oh, he screwed it up, of course he did."

Between that and the PUBG mess, I'm starting to go from "watch pretty much everything they do" to "watch almost no GBEast content because Dan's in it." (The MatterFall video was good, and Dan was in it--but Dan was being an idiot while Vinny and Abby were being cool.)

I don't hate Dan like a lot of people do but I do think he meshed better with the GB west crew. Going from Austin to Dan on GB East is quite the turnaround. I really miss the Austin, Vinny, & Alex dynamic.

I had a huge grin on my face during the last Blue Bombin' as I didn't expect Austin to be there. Austin calling Dan out and forcing him to think deeper about the crazy bullsh*t he says was great. When Dan is acting like Dan Ryckert and not playing up a character, I like him quite a bit.

I haven't been watching many of the PUBG streams. What's going on in them?

Dan ignores his teammates and basically cowers in fear while grabbing every item he can. He's not always terrible but he's usually good for the worst teammate on two runs per episode.

Oh yeah, that sounds about right. I'd love to see more of Jeff shooting him when he's being dumb.

Jeff threw some shade at him on the Bombcast this week.

Anyone got good episodes of Murder Island to recommend, including the one where Jeff shoots Dan? The only one I've watched was Vinny teaching Abby how to play.

Jeff bore salt at that. "I think three of the four players there could get a chicken dinner" or something.

I've won 12 chicken dinners now, about half in squad and at least two of which I basically did nothing except Not Actively Submarining The Teammates Who Were Doing Work. Jeff-Brad-Vinny-[Alex/Abby] would eventually win a chicken dinner by accident if nothing else. Dan actively making bad decisions makes that very unlikely.

The Nintendo segment on the new Beastcast had me rolling. So funny.

It was a good roast that's hard to enjoy because of how true it is. It's too bad Nintendo won't listen to stuff like that.

Abby's reaction at the end of Film and 40s doing They Live has rocketed her to the top of heap of the "Best Giant Bomb Person" rankings.

The Xcom feature has pretty much gone how I expected it to go.

Did you watch today's or just last week's (with Dan at the wheel)?

I've watched all of them including today's.

I'm caught up now. Yeah, pretty much exactly as expected.

Spoiler:

Maybe once they lose this game, they just move straight on to XCOM 2. Since it'd be canon then.
